I use XPLR as a road/all road setup currently on one of my bikes. 48T up front and 10-44 in back. I actually like it lot and it works really well
@robstahdida90602 ай бұрын
thanks for picking up that topic! 🙌🏻 i think the big question is: do you think the range of a 1by 13 spd can cover most of the scenarios that a 2by 12 spd can in a road focused environment - if not do better.

Interested to see how you find the 40T ring on the road. I had to go to a 44T to not spin out on fast group rides and descents

I rode a Scott Addict gravel w/ Sram Rival AXS 46-10/44 (and 36 mm tyres) as a road bike for 9 months and it worked flawlwssly. I could hang with the fast guys in the local chain gangs and it was so d... comfortable with the large tyres 🙂
@jluisiii2 ай бұрын
Agreed, I do the same with a Scott Addict gravel I’ve had for the last year. I’m able to keep up, it’s as much about the motor as it is the bike. Making this change would make the bike even better and more road worthy and still great on gravel!

I am running the 10-44 xplr with a 44 chainring. I think the 40 tooth chainring will be too small for you on the road.
@zachs61912 ай бұрын
you need a bigger chainring for it to be a road bike replacement. you are going to spend a lot of time in the 10t cog, or spun out. no need to stick with 'gravel' gearing on a road bike. 48x10-46 is the same range as a 52/36x11-32 cassette

Great video - thanks for posting. I have an Enve Fray being built up now, with the new SRAM Red 2x (12-speed). I considered the XPLR 13-speed, but concerned about the gear range. We have some viciously steep grades (20+%) that I ride frequently. In order to gear for steep grades, are you concerned about losing top-end speed not he flats? 40T / 10T seems like you may spin out pretty quickly.

Driving two hours tomorrow for fit with Enve recommended bike shop just outside of San Diego. Intention is to see if I can get dialed in w/Fray and was wondering if new Sram 13 speed would make sense. Long time rider but have limited knowledge of these things. I just want to smash the pedals. Timing on posting this video couldn't be more perfect. Look forward to your real world review on how it all meshes together.

What do you think of combining the S-Works Crux frame with the XPLR grupset, the XPLR 303 wheels and the XPLR handlebar? This is Ben Delaney's bike setup from the launch review videos. Asking you since you had the Crux for quite a while.

I have Mosaic GT2-45, SRAM Mullet (Rival/GX) with Easton EC90SL 1x. I have Gravel Enve AG25, TerraSpeed 40mm, 10-52 X01 and Road Hunt 40mm, 30mm GP5kstr 10-50 X01. The Easton CINCH allows me to switch from 46t to 40t front chainring in 5min if I need the extra climbing gears. I think you will spin out with 40-10 on roads, definitely on descents.

I was going to build a road/gravel do it all bike with a crux frame. And thinking to use 44t chafing ring with the 13 speed cassette. Was hoping the gear ratio is not too hard for the occasional climbs… look forward to your experience on the setup!

Love the concept! My 2 big questions would be: What happens when you end up in faster pace line on the road. I have no desire to race, but like getting in fast groups on occasion. And how “light” does ENVE (and you) mean when people say this bike could work for light gravel. (Assuming you went to the fat end of the range-40mm tires.

I’ve been seriously considering a 1x setup for my brand new Argon 18 Krypton with which I’m doing exactly as you describe: using it for both road and gravel, here in southeast Michigan. Two sets of Hunt wheels which are working pretty well. The kicker is that my existing SRAM Force 2x drops my chain frequently, despite repeated adjustments from a very good LBS. Not sure if I want to give SRAM more money when they have utterly failed me already, but I’m very curious to know more.

Curious, it looks like you are running the DUB wide spacing here, right? What is the chainstay length on the Fray? I had some conversations with SRAM folks at a race recently, specifically RE the chainline requirements of the RED XPLR. The answers were confusing to say the least... They suggested that one should use the DUB wide chainline of 47.5 mm with gravel bike chainstay lengths(typically 420-430 mm), but that one should use the DUB normal width for shorter chain stays with the 45 mm chainline. It all sounds dubious to me: wider chainline for longer chain stays... I prefer the regular road spacing, even for gravel use, as it the narrower Q factor is more aero, and biomechanically superior for me.

Really thinking about the same Fray/xplr 13 speed setup for my next “roadie” build. How does climbing compare in the 46t cog compared to a 2x setup in terms of efficiency? I’m still on sram 11speed 1x and find doing long climbs wears my chain faster even using Silca wax. Planning to move to a hilly country so still debating on the build, but man 1x is so simple! Thank you!

@SpencerReidBuchanan2 ай бұрын
As someone who's done the 2 wheel set things on a gravel bike, I'll never do it again. Swapping wheels almost every ride just got incredibly annoying. I can see why someone on a budget would splurge on something like a high end Specialized Crux and do it if they can't afford two bikes. But as someone working on a very tight budget with a Diverge, I just bought a super nice used rim brake Cannondale SuperSix Evo with Sram Red for less than I paid for the carbon road wheels/tire setup for the Diverge.

The front chainring is too small for a road bike. I currently have the 12 speed Sram red 48/35 with the 10-33 cassette. I occasionally run out of speed when riding downhill. I wouldn't want any less 48-10
@outdoorbros_2 ай бұрын
I think I mentioned somewhere in one of the videos that for road or even “do-it-all,” I’d prefer a 44t, 46t or 48t. The 40t is still better than expected, only running out of gears around 32-35mph.

There is only aesthetic problem with this frameset... The headtube is soooo long for its size and make whole bike look strangly kicked and non race... Would look so much better with 2cm shorter headtube and 2cm spacers instead :-). Anyway great bike!!!🤩
@donbarnard822 ай бұрын
That's the curse I have to live with. :) I'm on 61cm or 64cm bikes and they can look ridiculous. My diverge 61cm does a pretty good job of mitigating that long headtube look.
@outdoorbros_2 ай бұрын
I can see that, but I think I’d rather have the head tube a little taller than have the 2cm of spacers. Just my two cents.

When riding fast and hard, are there enough gears between or are you always hunting for a gear. How do 15-20% climbs feel on gravel with only 6 tooth difference. Those are my two big hold backs from one bike.
@donbarnard822 ай бұрын
My disappointment with the new group set is the 10-46 when today I have a 10-50. :( With 20% gravel climbs and I'm not looking to lose that 50 tooth. My chainring is 42 which has been fine for me in 42-10. I'm not sure about a 40-10 like his setup...
@garrettpeck17462 ай бұрын
You’re maxing out with 108 gear inches. I am currently using a road wheelset on a gravel bike and it maxes out at 108 gear inches. It’s not enough. Cadence gets too high as you near 40mph. THE problem with a 1x “road” group is you need to use a mountain cassette to get the range. This is why road will always be 2x.
@PeacefulNomad2 ай бұрын
I find the 40 T to be a bit small. Is there an optimal chainring size?
@geralddittrich80122 ай бұрын
Same here...i´d use a 42 possibly for "normal" riding, and using a 40-46 e.g. for bikepacking in the mountains
@raphindahouse2 ай бұрын
if you wanna replace the 46/33 with 10-36 cassette, the 44 chainring is the sweetspot. if you go with a 46 chainring you loose the 33&36 combination of the 2x gears. if you go with a 42 chainring, you loose the 46&10 combination of the 2x gears. so 44 chainring is in the middle.
