Be interesting to do a run without the air filter just to see how much that air filter design hurts performance. Shop looks good Joe, needs to drum up a few ol tin saw signs.

I have an 088 just the motor that I am building a longtail boat motor for my KZbin channel. Do you have any experience porting these? And how would I know what to do? I have started building the expansion chamber which o have some idea of what I am doing, but with the porting I worried I will ruin it

Hey Joe...Scott over at bluesaws....Funny thing on this. We placed a meteor order in error a few weeks back and wound up with the meteor version of this cyl... Not sure if it has any interest to you, but knowing there are about none of these in the states we're not likely to do a thing with it. Point being if you want it, I'll send it over. Might be better for you than a paperweight over here.... Appreciate the great vids.

I’ve had three 038 magnums/magnum 2’s. Always liked that they made decent power up high for limbing and enough torque to pull longer bars. Stihl was coming up with some cool factory mufflers back then, funny to see they’ve stuck with that choke/filter design for so long. Those things were about as heavy as a 661 so I replaced mine with the two dolmars you’ve got right now.

Your studio is looking good Joe :) I have an 038 mag II with a full wrap handle. It is a nice torquey felling saw. The air filter was a huge week point on these saws, I would probably take the time to figure out a carb with built in choke and velocity stack with a foam filter if I was cutting with it every day. I enjoy running it every now and then. I looked into getting MS382 when they first came out but, the flippy caps, air filter, and open port cylinder turned me off, It is cool their still being made, they just would not compete with the MS462 or 500i here in the U.S. I wish Stihl would have just taken the mag II and put a Warbro carb on it with an HD filter setup and left the rest of the saw alone. I think if the manufacturers would do some minor improvements to some of their older models they would sell, heck sell them as kit saws. I would gladly pay good money for an all OEM 064 or a red light 066 kit saw with full wrap handles.

How do you make a saw pick up torque numbers? It seems like its kinda hard to achieve.
@dynojoemods2764 Жыл бұрын
They really are not "torque" type engines. Best we can do is maintain or maybe add just a little bit, but move the peak up in the power band.

038 has 3 models av, super and mag 62 67 72 cc, closed ports. Mag 2 was next gen in the 038mag line . The mag I had was the first saw i had and it pulled light a freight train with a 32 inch full comp full chiesel but heavy as heck
@eurokid83 Жыл бұрын
The mag 2 was the first of the 72cc 038’s made in Germany. I believe some of the very late mag 2’s were made in Brazil. After that they were made exclusively in Brazil and were no longer badged “magnum II” just magnum. Later magnums had the translucent fuel tank.
@ChippyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@eurokid83 canada I guess was different we had both mag and mag 2
@eurokid83 Жыл бұрын
@@ChippyOutdoors same here in the states. The 038 mag II is older, 038 mag is newer. I wanna say in the early 90’s they dropped the 2 and were just called magnum.

nice, I have the same saw ported it a lil bit and put a pipe on it. I run 25" inch duromatic hardnose bar on mine, dealers don't sell sprocket nose bars here. I was thinking putting an ms381 piston in there since the stock piston skirt is a lil short on the exaust side, ground a lil bit on the case so it can clear the piston etc.. haven't done it yet tho maybe in the future. I screwed up my first cylinder I cut too much on the squish band lol, that why I thought that an ms381 piston could work to eliminate the free port hehe, I run both stock and modded one and I do not like running the stock one. Never seen anyone port one of these too, yours probably the second on ported other than mine hehe
@rc-daily20 күн бұрын
I really like my 038 av magnum 2. I cleaned up the ports and widened them a little bit. It seemed to make it run somewhat better. My magnum 2 seemed super torquey until i messed with the ports some. Now it seems to make less torque down low but revs up quite a bit more. It's one of my favorite saws to cut with. Up until i got my 500i anyway 😂

I have ran the 038 super and a few 038 mag II's. The super with 24 is okish saw for power to weight, The mag II is darn good falling saw, carb and and air filter were the design weakness for sure. If some one could 3d print a Vstack with a choke it would sure be nice.

Ive got 4 of these. One was to test, two were gifts and one was a mistake order. Mine that i have are not authentic. I had them on my channel but there was controversy. There are some real time law suits on the copies. They are similar design but lots different than 38/381, not interchangeable clutch for example.

Hi joe,my name is ron I'm contacting you with regards to your ms 382 build .I've been running an 038 avs farm boss since 1995 it has been .y go to saw for all these years. The old girl is real tired!!! I'm fearing that she's going to need a complete rebuild . I know that stihl made 3 diff. Versions of the 038 .#1 - 038avs w/ 48 mm bore .#2 - 038 avs super w/ 50mm bore a d #3- was the beast the 038 magnum w/ 52mm bore.I've read that the mag will out buck a stock 046 mag. Because the 038 mag has the same bore as 46 however the 038m has a shorter stroke ! The 046 revs around 11800- 12300 whereas the 038m revs. Around 13300rpms. Joe I hope this info. Is helpful to you and your many viewers. If I can be of any further assistance please fell free to contact me . Sincerely,Ron Mendoza.

Great 72 cc work saws. My 038 MAG made in Germany is even better and will pull well sharpened 404 no worries. And will last a lifetime. My 462 is snappy and light but pull 404 in hard wood? No way
