Great video and this looks like a great setup! This mimics a piece of worm that has been dropped over the side of the boat and it just falls down until a fish eats it. I remember doing this when I was a kid. Gotta give it a try. Thanks Matt!!

Oh boy!! Gotta get some new hooks lol I could definitely see people making up their own little keepers. Stiff mono, few wraps of fly tying thread... Maybe lead wire on the shank would work. So many cool things can be done with this technique!! Thank you for this one for sure!! As soon as you said "pressured" you had me. My like was like the 4th of July today!!! Another great video Matt! Definitely a good finesse alternative for smallies. If you ever make it up to Ontario and want to fish Simcoe message me. I will hopefully have some good spots figured out by then on my new boat! Spy baits, hover's, ned's, shaky heads, neko's, dark sleepers, jerkbaits, etc. Oh man it is going to be fun when bass season opens up here mid June! Also I think Mike Ike did a video on the hover a year or two ago and that was the first time I heard about. Thanks again Matt!

Matt thanks for the new hook info with the keeper🍺 for Hover strolling. I’ll pick some of them up. Ike did a nice Hover strolling video last year using the Berkley 4” Max Scent flat nose minnow and he invented a new word. “Atomically” correct. He said the Berkley minnow tail splits vertically not horizontally the way he rigged it and that is “atomically”correct😂. Fish it on any vertical cover. Bridge piling, standing timber, bluff walls, deep docks and simple let it spiral down with semi slack line.

I clicked on Randys winter topwater myths video, back in October left a smartass remark and thought that would be it. then I made the mistake of watching Randys back reeling video ! I had to comment , I was going to take the gloves off and lay the boots to him !... the comment I did leave was... very diplomatic. I hope Randy will, in the future, do another video about back reeling vs drags on spinning gear and braid to fluorocarbon. this time exploring the grey areas ! Man, I've been working on this technique since the end of last season- the Victory Tail by Optimum Baits is an excellent bait to use. That said- this is not as easy as it looks, there's basically no weight on your line at all- you're shaking just the slack- and you're trying to get it to just sit in place and "hover"- thus the name of the technique- not as easy as it sounds. Would make a great bed bait though I assume- since you can just hover it in place right over the bed. I need to experiment with some other baits- the Victory Tails are the only thing I've tried so far. I think Optimum is a division of Lucky craft- they make some cool plastics.

Matt, you could try this as well.

There are small plastic lines copper tubes. Which fly fishing anglers used to dress what are known as tube flies on (it's just a small bore copper or brass outer tube, which has a plastic inner liner tube that is melted slightly at either end so the line has a low friction surface to move against).
@academicmailbox77982 жыл бұрын
What you could do with your plastic bait if you wanted. Is to utilize a silicone rubber sleeve (Hellabass channel showed the pliers they use to insert the silicon sleeves on the baits). Which work better than an O-ring. What I would do then. Is to use a drop shot hook underneath the silicon sleeve component (where the straight part of the hook shank and lie tie are laid down flat against the plastic bait, and the bend and point of the hook ride upward).
@academicmailbox77982 жыл бұрын
Then what I would do. Is I would insert the copper tube with plastic liner. Inside the front part of the plastic bait. As you have explained there (using the nail weight). Except that in my system the line enters through the middle of these weighted copper tube component. At the front of your soft plastic bait. And you create a pin hole aperture in that bait. Somewhere on it's back. For the monofilament line to exit the soft plastic at the top (and then the monofilament attaches to the line tie of your drop shot hook). That is laid flat along the top of the soft plastic bait.
@academicmailbox77982 жыл бұрын
So why would you do this? Why would you bother at all? Well, to be precise about it. What will happen if you rig your soft plastic bait. In this way. Is that you will generate a longitudinal bending force. Down along the lateral line. Of your soft plastic bait (you have to judge exactly right, what distance the silicon sleeve needs to be positioned at). Depending on the length you make the copper tube component. At the front. You can use a hack saw (and get spare plastic liner). So you can make copper tubes. Of different lengths. Some of them very short. Others much longer. Normally for fly fishing. They sell the plastic lined copper tubes. As two inch, one inch and half inch lengths. And believe me. There is considerable weight. In a two inch length copper or brass fly fishing tube component.
@academicmailbox77982 жыл бұрын
Another way to do it. Would be to insert a very long shank hook. Into your plastic fluke bait first. To rig the fluke bait. The way you would normally rig it. Using a large, long shank steel hook. Then, have your monofilament line. Attached to the line tie of the long shank hook. And remove the long steel hook. By dragging the hook and the monofilmanet tied to it. Through the fluke bait at the other end. What will then happen. Is you have pulled the monofilament line. Straight through the bait and out the other end. You will have the copper tube already threaded on the monofilament (above the head of the fluke bait, and ready to be moved down and into the front portion of the plastic fluke bait). Then you remove the long shank steel hook. From the end of the monofilament line. And you replace it with a suitable short shank, drop shot hook or similar. Of your own choice. And you pull the shorter shank hook back into the bait itself. Leaving the hook bend and point outside of the bait.
