I was in Amsterdam a few weeks ago and toured a Van Gogh museum. It was such a privilege to see his paintings up close, they were absolutely stunning. It was a wonderful experience, also a visit to Rembrandt’s house, fascinating!

I visited the same museum several years back, 'Wheatfield with Crows' was one of my favorites! The Rijksmuseum just across the way has a few more works of his.

A few years back I was at an exhibition of VanGogh’s pencil sketches… studies for paintings… then standing alone there was a single self portrait… you could see those blue eyes staring out at you… the colors were so vibrant… and you could literally “ see” the brush strokes in the painting… it was very surreal to see right in front of me… to stand in front of something Vincent had created himself… so glad I got to see it… always loved his work… Such a tragic life… but he left such amazing work…

Any chance that was the Drawings exhibit a the MET in NYC? That was my favorite exhibit and I’m happy I grabbed the book (which is now freely available as a PDF from the MET’s site).

@elxsound. Actually if I’m not mistaken it was at the former Whitney Museum… at the old location… lots of pencil and charcoal sketches… some in letters to his brother Theo… very impressive… but the color self portrait stopped me in my tracks… very moving… to see

I saw the Van Gough showing in Los Angeles awhile back and it was amazing! Up close and personal! I noticed in Irises, one small spot on lower left was left unpainted (perhaps he ran out of paint to pain it in, it shows the canvas)!

I used to work at the Getty and people would come all the way from China and India just to see it in person. They would bring magnifying glasses and really look at this painting sometimes for 40 or 50 minutes. I don't think people realize thats one reason why they never took it down.

Last summer I went to a great Van Gogh exhibit in Montibello CA. None of his real work was there but visuals done in a modern way. One part was a huge room covered in his work that kept moving and changing even across the floor. The best part (for a bit extra $$)…a VR experience where u entered his paintings. I almost fell off stool! You were floating through cafes..fields…etc. I hope he is watching all this.❤

There are only 2 permanent red pigments. Vermillion and cadmium red. Cadmium red was not invented in Van Gogh’s time. Vermillion is very opaque but could have been used. It is made from sulfur and mercury. Historically vermillion is the red in painting human flesh. Van Gogh preferred a more transparent red which is not permanent but very beautiful to use. this was a very interesting video. The Getty has the resources to be one of the best technical museums in the world. This is a wonderful example of that. A project well worth the time and money!

A year or two ago I saw a video about another Van Gogh painting the colors of which did not look right. It turned out that the red pigment, which was used extensively, was a notably less expensive one that was not light-fast. When the red color was restored by computer, the picture looked tremendously better. If VG used the same inexpensive red paint to make purple, it would have changed to blue over time.

Truly remarkable painter. Prolific, great compositions in all his work. Anyone who aspires to become a painter needs to study VVG, to see his paintings in reality, and if possible, visit the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller near Arnhem, Orsay and the Metropolitan NYC. There are numerous films about him and his tormented life in Holland, Belgium, England and France. One will find that his paintings are not two dimensional, nor are they three dimensional… they are immersive. The viewer can enter into his wonderland

The best part of Van Gogh genius is that he knew how worthy his works will become...a century later on. During his miserable lifetime, only his brother was the one to encourage him and believe in his talent and buy him the colors so he could...catch the beauty of landscapes like nobody else. Beyong crops, clouds or flowers, he was so gifted to paint the wind, the waves, the empathy among vegetals, the Sun rays and shadows, the light and ...lack of light or glittering reflexes. He was amazing. It's not casual that in the end, he have lost his minds due to the fact, he was much too modern for his ages and nobody understood his genius nature. Nobody wanted to believe in him. Van Gogh is the best kind of guy capable to teach anyone, no matter what people say, if you don't believe in yourself, nobody will do it. He knew some day, he will be worthy like most important artists. Still, trying to study deeply the ... feelings he used to put colors on canvas is ...another way to make you lose your minds of delight, his genius beyond his madness or.. maybe he was so talented because of his mental disorder. You could never notice those iris flowers tiny details without him to show it. Try to imagine him painting, of how he was like rather blinded, watching the lanscape and find the proper color on canvas to copy the real life. Now we have pictures, computers catch milions of pixels but it's lifeless, his paintings instead are like you expect those flowers to caress you and give you the next sensation on skin. A genius artists could never be so if not sharing his huge fortune with the others, poor Van Gogh he lost his minds in the end, such a tragedy losing such a great guy. Those ages back...sick minded ones you know, a lot of people used to say, they are posessed by demons, they used to believe in prejudices that dealing with a mad artist your family could get the contagion. Van Gogh was too modern for his ages, therefore if any other artist of our times feel like.. not fit for the audience, you are not alone, you don't have to give up believe in your genius nature when nobody wants you because...some day, a century later on, they might pick up their minds. Van Gogh paintings became very precious after WW2 ended... because fascist bullies loved to burglar everything and anything from Jews all over the Europe, mostly Netherlands or France. Van Gogh paintings became famous because Nazis stole them...wish you check if it's true or not because.. yeah, always a Jews very sad story once again 😢😢😢

There was one glaring omission: an explanation for the change in color of the irises from the original purple to the current blue. Given the detailed study of the painting, I would have thought that would have been an obvious topic to address. In the end, I was disappointed,

A little piece of the actual plants that littered the ground in the exact location the painting was made was discovered to be stuck into the paint and is part of the art itself. Really cool. However, You are right. It had no relation to the violet color, except when they went there, you could see the violet color of their irises. They are not blue. The red faded away.

What has become of the minds of those people? You can't paint n you can't see the genius of the creative spirit n that,s why they create questions ,so they can create answers that only create doubt n wonder.it causes me to wonder about this science as they call it.Shouldnt those wizards be discovering how to save the world from the technology that will surely be our Demise? Oh no,that would have an actual purpose! No let,s analyze a Van Gogh down to the molecules.Simply Ridiculous!!!What a Waste!!! Enjoy Art for what it is, Beauty!
