Kyle, Vanessa, and Moritz take the new Tesla Model 3 Performance Highland Refresh (euro spec w/ LG battery) on an adventure to hit the top speed on a derestricted section of Germany Autobahn! They battle thermal issues, traffic, and more but eventually do hit the top speed and end up absolutely overheating the entire car. Join them as they evaluate not just the acceleration or straight line performance, but also the thermal performance of the vehicle.

Had 3 M3P over the years here in Germany. There were only a handful of chances VMax them. Speed limits, construction, traffic. The early 2019 Panasonic battery was great, the later LG isnt. Same with the stock tires, later ones were more efficient, but had no grip. Vmax of +155mph or 261kph was limited to a minute or so, the car then slowed down. One trick pony, thats not what other cars do (sadly, ICE cars). The P ist just a sticker. Great car, but I switched to a MY SR. Its fast enough with 217kph on todays Autobahn and traffic

@@t.d.5804 The Model 3 for the EU market were american-made until mid-2021. The chinese-made Model 3 arrived in Europe around April/May 2021. All the Model 3 with resistive heating (2018-2020) and the early facelift ones with heat pump (2021) were made in the US for Europe as well. I owned a US-made 2020 M3P and now have an early 2021 M3P facelift, also made in the US. Sorry to see the global spec m3p struggling like this. For those worried, the US spec seems to do better. Hit top speed (163mph) while at 23% battery on a test road. (Closed to public) Slight power limit but still hit top speed. I'd imagine it would do 180ish if it wasn't limited. Took 23 seconds, full throttle to go from 123 to 163 at that battery %. Probably would do it in 15-17 seconds at 80+ battery.

Actually even the normal Awd EV6 with 325hp is more expensive than the Tesla on higher speeds and not even faster than a SR+ for 43k (but much faster to 40mph), so you cannot really compare these, and you don't get electric seats in the Ev6 Gt and the ioniq 5 N. I think it’s also due to the temperature curve not being linear. As the temperature in the cells, cables, motors etc. rise the resistance goes up too. Pushing a lot of amps through an already hot system will heat it up even faster which will make harder to estimate you’re actual thermal headroom. That’s why I think they went for these more linear easy to understand bars that on quick glance tell you how much performance headroom you actually have left.

With regard to heat, the higher voltage architecture helps a bunch. At the same KW level the E-GMP cars need half the current, heat is a _current squared_ equation, so .5 amps means .25 heat. But there’s also huge differences in cell, pack, and cooling designs as well. I wouldn’t have thought that edge cooled pouches via the bottom-plate would work as well as it apparently does compared to side cooled cylinders, but it appears to work pretty well in practice.

Tesla likes a cylindrical “jelly roll in a can” cell, (with varying sized cylinders) and Hyundai is using much larger “layer cake on its side” pouches assembled into a larger module that confines the pouches. The pack cooling designs are also very different, Tesla likes to weave stuff between cells serpentine style, and Hyundai likes a stir welded big bottom plate contacting the edge of the pouches. Two very different approaches Munro Live has done teardowns of both packs and their cooling designs.

Tesla is great value for money for most people who are just driving in traffic and want a lot of power but only for less than 1-2 minutes. And for the people who want to track... or drive spiritedly longer, then the more expensive Hyundai IONIQ 5N and Porsche Taycan are better as they can maintain high power for significantly longer without overheating and aren't underbraked from factory.

LG (NCM) batteries are also applied to the Porsche Taycan Turbo. Products released in the US naturally use US-produced Panasonic batteries (NCA) for subsidies. Of course, it may have used a much cheaper battery than the Porsche, but I think the battery manufacturer's warranty on the C rate also factors into the output limit. What I'm really curious about here is that NCA is better than NCM in terms of output limit, but the lifespan is also unstable. No matter how hard you search, it's hard to find criticism of Tesla's SOH, but I can't tell if it's because there really isn't a problem or if it's just Teslaboys blinding them.

First of all, thanx for excellent content and second, THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing more light on the subject of EU long range / performance battery (LG M50). For EU people that don't do any intense research, they don't know that they are not getting the car they saw reviewed on KZbin (since more reviewers are US based). I got the M3P 2022 with LG pack, just missed out on the Panasonic that they stopped delivery in march 2022. I would very much like to have a dedicated video about this and also about claims of issues with the Panasonic battery packs that came from China (although as far as I was able to research, the cells them self were actually US made). What I would like to have focused on is the only real problem that LG M50 has: high inner resistance. There is nothing wrong with the cooling system from Tesla, the only issues is wrong selection of batters for the power requirements. Too high inner resistance causes higher losses which causes more heating of the battery. The power losses (heat) on LG battery are almost twice as high as on Panasonic (According to Eivissa from TFF - than you so much), the voltage drop of Panasonic at max. power out is about 55v @ 1150 amp (63kW goes into heat losses in the battery), but LG has 95V @ 1250 amp (119kW in battery heat losses)!!! I tested this my self on OBD and the voltage dropped from 390V down to 290 V (my battery SOC was about 90% but the temperature was not as high so I even got more than 95v drop). tff-forum.de/t/model-3-performance-2022-panasonic-vs-lg/210880?page=1

I live in Mexico and even though I can afford the performance I had to settle for the LR, i would never max this on our roads cause I would go flying through the air at all the potholes and there are no superchargers even remotely close to each other so draining your battery in a few minutes on open roads would mean you’ll get stranded

hello, I would love to see you test electric cars from the European market that are not available in the USA.

Is there any indication that the EU version will get a better battery (Panasonic) at some point in the future? Has Tesla ever done something like this? Would feel bad to buy the M3P with LG at full price only for Tesla to release a roughly 10% faster version (and quicker charging) some time later.

panasonic would overheat as well

@@alpahcNo. Also there is 0% chance of bringing back the Panasonic battery to Europe. IRA reasons. One can hope for a better LG or CATL battery.

@@theipc-twizzt2789 of course it does. There are several videos showing the pana version overheats even faster

It would have to be changes in our Government. It's too easy to get a license in the U.S. and we are lackluster as far as actually teaching proper driving habits.
