A quick look at an inexpensive new test gadget I purchased to help me review RV battery and power systems. The Koolertron battery monitor has a 400 amp shunt, LCD display, and Bluetooth app. It'll display a plethora of information for me like the voltage, amperage, wattage, kilowatt hours, amp hours, temperature, and more.

Hello! Thank you for creating this video! I have a question regarding its usage. Can this be used with cars or car starter batteries? If yes, do I need a larger shunt due to the spike in current caused by the car starting? I want to monitor parasitic drain current, which is under 1A. However, I'm unsure if I need a larger shunt as my car battery has 500-600 cold crank amps (Honda Element 4.2L, 4 cylinder). I've seen many people using this product in RVs, but I'm not sure if they're using it on their starter battery or on their secondary/leisure battery only. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on this. Unfortunately, I'm unable to reach the manufacturer.

Most people use it for deep cycle battery applications like in an RV or boat where they need to monitor for battery capacity left. A starter battery usually will stay near full charge anyway. But my guess would be since the shunt is built to handle 500A continuous load, it could likely handle more for a short duration like a starter motor.

Hi Ray! Thinking of adding a USB port to power my mini-fans while sleeping and thought I could tap into the light wiring: is the standard RV light-wire gauge heavy enough to support two standard USB outlets operating at the same time?

Should be. usually, the DC circuits for the RV lighting are fused and wired for 15 amps. At least in the older models like mine that used to use 15-20 watt incandescent bulbs, maybe that has changed with the LED use in the newer models.

Cool. Ever since I bought lithium, it's so much more interesting than lead acid. And running my ac unit, 13,500 btu, I only sew a voltage drop from 13.3-13.1. at about 70% soc. I'm curious to see what kind of voltage drop thier is across a shunt at high amperage. My renogy batteries have communication ports, that track amps, volts, soc ect. So don't feel need for shunt at moment. Looking forward to more battery testing!.

Was that 13.1V measured at the inverter input connections? or in Renogy Bluetooth app?

@@LoveYourRV 12.9 at inverter, 13.1 on renogy display. About 1.5-2% voltage drop to inverter. I have 4 100ah. At 160 amps, 40amps per battery. The battery monitor where it most likely measures at cells is fairly consistent to battery terminals. I'm sure thier is a small voltage drop though. They use 4 10 gauge wire apparently per terminal, as per will prowse video. Current sharing between batteries is within a few amps.

I’m curious to learn if you’ve tested the range of their Bluetooth. I tow a vehicle behind my RV and my current Bluetooth enabled battery monitor on that vehicle doesn’t reach the cab of my truck, about 25 feet. Thanks

I haven't done a max distance test, but in the video, when I was showing the app, I was at the back of our trailer, and the control box was in the front storage compartment. My trailer is 30 feet long, and the connection was good. But hard to predict for specific circumstances because metal and other electronic interference can restrict the signal. The manufacturer lists the Bluetooth communication range as 10 meters, about 33 feet.

I don't have lithium (yet), still using lead acid on my drag along. Is it important that the shunt is protected from weather? I haven't checked to see if I have space to put it in a covered space near the batteries, but it's pretty tight in the the box.

Yes, its a good idea to shield it from the weather to prevent it getting wet. There is a small circuit board on it plus the control wiring and negative cable connections.

I was just looking at this on Amazon. Figured I'd check out here before buying. It's $77.99 canadian with a $5 off coupon right now. I'm curious about hooking up the relays but my new batteries have everything built in. Overcharge and low temperature. How is it working for you?

Can this shunt be connected to a series or parallel of batteries? If so, do you set the AH to the total of capacity or a single battery capacity?

Yes it can and you set for the total capacity of the battery bank

Hello, how did you set the 100% state of charge of the batterie ? Does this outlet makes the calibration by itself ?

I fully charged my battery, then went into the settings and set the total amp hours to the rating of the battery I'm monitoring and set percent to 100%. After that, it can read how many amp hours are used and recharged and calculate the percentage left.

Is the control panel waterproof/ resistant? Thinking of mounting it to an external panel but am wondering if i'll get away with it

The front of it looks like it could handle some splashes or rain as it has rubber buttons and a clear film display, but the back of the case isn't waterproof.

Hello, I just got this device (the 2023 model) Is there someone who can make a video or send me info on how to install a relay to protect my solar system with Lipo4 batt. What kind of relay (12V array, with 300Ah 12V Lithium battery bank), and how to connect. Thanks in advance.

A while back, Juntek offered to send me products for review, so maybe I'll get them to send the new model and test out the low-temperature protection. Looks like it just needs an external relay installed. Where to install and relay type will depend on your charging sources ie solar or converter, or inverter, and how many max amps they produce. May have to use multiple relays. Can get a little complicated in some systems. Much better to have a lithium battery with internal temperature protection instead. Cheers, Ray

@Love Your RV , Yes it's to put on a 12V solar system. I have 5 panels of 150Wp each feeding a 300Ah LiFePo4 battery that is connected to a 2500W converter 12 to 220V

@Love Your RV , The use of a relay is it only in regard of the low temp protection ? Or does it more than that 🤔

I think I'll look at using a solid state relay on my solar controller panel input. Temp gets too low and it turns off solar panel input. Maybe something like this might work amzn.to/3JZ3izN Not sure, will have to see how the Juntek relay control voltage works.

I don't have the newest model but looks like it can do high/low temp, low voltage, high voltage and over current protections. What ever you need. See here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn-qoIRulNKihNk But if you don't need those there isn't any point wiring it up for that. Do you even know if you need these protection options? What is your brand and model of 300Ah LiFePO battery?

After many many install and delete and reinstall I finally got the App connecting. BUT !!!! The App doesn't work on Android. I installed the other App for it VA. It works but !!, every single time I start up the App the battery is reset to 100% where the true value is far from that. So I need to manually set the real value again and again each time. So this is unworkable and can't be trusted for the system 😢😢😢

@Love Your RV Not here for me :-( Every time I open the App the battery is set to 100%. And I have the better? KH App on my iPhone, and there it takes me at least between 7to10 time reopeni g the App before I can get it to connect. Always within 0.5 to max 5m from the device !

It is a new model so maybe the app is still buggy and will be update. I have the older version of the device and it has has worked really well. App connects easily and has good range and remembers the settings.
