New Tool: CHIPPING a driveway

Due to the weather, the dirt work we contracted out for the driveway and shop pad has been delayed. So, we spent some time doing grunt work to shape the driveway and get a better visual of how it will look and where it will be.
We got the tractor out to the property for the first time, which was exciting, to say the least. Tractor seat time is therapeutic. To help us clear our piles, I use a Woodland Mills WC68 6" PTO Wood Chipper, powered by the tractor PTO, and can handle material up to 6" in diameter. The chipper is rated for 20-50 PTO horsepower. My tractor has 30 horsepower at the PTO, so I won't be able to maximize the capability of this chipper, but it will allow for growing room if I get a larger tractor in the future. I haven't measured anything, but I believe I chipped a 5-6" diameter pine tree with it with no problems. I think I could chip 6" pine easily, but hardwoods are another story. You can audibly tell the ease of chipping pine vs the power demand of similar-sized hardwood. Considering we have 101 acres of trees, this will be a handy implement for the foreseeable future.

Jay, I'm pretty stoked to see this "homesteading" type content from you. I've followed your channel from the apartment shop days, and your presentation style has always been right up my alley. I've missed this type of content for a while now, and I'm very excited for the future of your channel!

Hi Jay I don’t usually comment but I have to tell you I am really enjoying this.. I have been watching for a long time and I really like it a lot.. But this is really interesting and like you are taking us along with your new journey in life.. Thank you for sharing.. I did this 40 years ago when I built my house.. I have got so much enjoyment from doing it and all the improvements I have done over the years.. The feeling of accomplishment you get is is incredible.. In time you and your Wife will feel it too.. You both can sit back and say We did this!!!! Thank you again for sharing and always move forward.. Oh your Daughter is so fun to watch as well.. I have 11 kids and wish they could have helped but most came after.. hahahaha Cheers

Really enjoy watching you making progress on your new property. I have a little of 5 1/2 acres and it is a lot of work but I would not have it any other way -- I am 60 now and I really believe it keeps me young, a little more sore than a few years ago but still worth it. I look forward to seeing your dream come true.

I love it. I think one of the exciting things is that I've been following you since you had your shop in the apartment. To see where you are now is so cool. I don't watch the homesteading videos or home remodeling videos much. But this has certainly peaked my interest. Probably because of the way you share the content, your excitement for it and I really do enjoy watching the process of taking the overgrown property and making something. I look forward to watching. I loved see the gate cleared and then seeing it in today's video. So much progress already. Thanks for bringing us along.

That’s a good chipper, I’ve used that same model a lot. I will say, it likes to be greased, especially if it’s out in the elements. Good video, enjoyed watching someone else doing the work….😂. Thanks for sharing.

Ever since I bought my first locking grease fitting, I have not bought another.. I still have to use an old one to get into a small diameter hole with a fitting on my backhoe, but, I LOVE the locking fittings.. One handed greasing.. Nice...

I got one of these last year and it’s right up there with the flail mower as the best attachment I have for the tractor. I’ve clogged mine a few times, usually on western red cedar bows. Most everything goes through without a problem. I only have 22 hp at the PTO.

I have the wood 8x10 chipper and have found that even on a 50 horse tractor it really help to stop the feed roller a few times while chipping larger diameter trees to let the tractor come but to full power so you dont blow sheer pins or kill tractor

Jay, make sure you engage your PTO before you open the throttle. Or, if you have a clutch on that tractor, push it in when engaging the PTO. It's very hard on it to have the throttle cranked up first.

Take 2 hours and dig yourself a burn pit into the side on a hill with the tractor and bucket Burning takes care of the large and small stuff whereas the chipper can only handle small stuff (and there will be big stuff). If you have a hill near water all the better (gas water pump for the stuff that will take longer to burn than you can oversee). Next, buy a grapple, one of mankind's greatest inventions. Cut, grapple, burn, repeat.

Like you have 30 HP PTO tractor considering which chipper to get leaning on the WC 88 due to the larger throat and chute size to handle brush and branched logs having a lot of towering red pine trees that I'll be dropping and chipping up the top 15-20 ', review's are the machine can handle it.

All those pine needles and chips says your property will be great for growing things like Blueberries that prefer the soil to be slightly acidic. Just don't add any Black Walnut to the piles, as that will kill just about anything you want to grow.

I wouldn't call that a side by side. I'd call it a gator. SbS, to me are more "racing" utvs, vs work utvs... not that this means anything, just interesting the variation in terminology for stuff. Those lock n lube fittings are great... I wish I thought of it.

Two people sit side by side vs a 4 Wheeler where they sit in front of another. So to me, all UTV and recreational vehicles like this are a side by side.

Because they will cause more trouble than solve. The problem isn't with material there, it's with proper drainage. A solution to that is in the works.

@@JayBates I have the HM122. I needed to build a small studio for my wife's business. It was during Covid when lumber prices were just about at their peak. It was cheaper to buy the sawmill and a couple loads of logs than it was to buy the lumber from Home Depot, and much cheaper than a prefab building. Now I sell enough lumber to keep up with gas and maintenance/consumables for the sawmill, and have an unlimited supply of hardwood lumber for my woodworking hobby. It is super satisfying to be able to take a log, turn it into lumber, then into a piece of furniture.

I am just curious...why cut them into the pathway instead of falling stuff into the woods where they will not cause extra work to clear path completely of every twig?
@JayBates
@JayBates 15 күн бұрын
They fall where they want to fall at this small size. We leave a lot of stuff on the ground to decompose. Our dirt work guy will clear a lot of this with a dozer soon anyway. We wanted to see the shape of the driveway to see if there was any fine tuning or changes that needed to be made.
