If you cut to the chase. the Highlander has a higher resale value and is more dependable than the other one you compared it to. You can easil get 400k to 500k miles out of this vehicle if you take care of it.

10:09 - In the U.S. we can option the bigger screen on the Limited. But - Toyota made a mistake by not allowing the *entire* 12" screen space for Apple CarPlay. I don't want to see the HVAC controls while I'm navigating. Give me a button to pop them back up on the screen momentarily, but let me use the entire space for navigation the rest of the time. Nice review, keep up the good work. I especially appreciated you contrasting it to the Telluride/Palisade twins.

8:04 Yes! Why don't manufacturers allow the bench in the top trim? In mainstream vehicles in the U.S., *everyone* does this with the exception of the Ford Explorer, where you can option the bench seat in any trim. Please! Tell manufacturers that we don't want to pay $50,000+ for a 4-seat vehicle (let's face it, the 3rd row of this 2020 Highlander is really not usable for anything but kids or if adults, VERY short drives.) But wait, there's more! The center seating position in the bench seat in the U.S. is as hard as a brick! It's VERY uncomfortable. Maybe the one I sat in had especially hard foam in the center, but my point is, even with the 2nd row bench seat, I wouldn't force someone to sit there for long drives due to the poor comfort. What happened Toyota????

Excellent review; the best I have seen on the new Highlander. Two comments about the vehicle: why is Toyota incapable of better packaging the exhaust piping so it does not hang so low -has been an issue for years on the old platform and they carry it over on a brand new platform??? And that silver plastic trim on the rear bumper is just an eyesore.

Grey plastic lower bumper the norm on many new SUVs these days. It's for scratching I think, looks better scratched then gloss black. And supposed to give it an "off-road" look.

Brand Loyalty comes from Toyota's quality, reliability, and so on. That's why the resale value is so good! Don't judge only by what you see and think is good. But by proven experience and the reality. Any other brands may be good to drive for up to five years. But, Toyota will last a lot longer.

Nice review of a great product. I'm totally awaiting your review of the IS 350 F Sport that's upcoming as I own a 2018 IS 350 F Sport. Yes, the vehicle is dated in terms of technology as well as powertrain, although the old reliable 3.5L V6 is no slouch and that vehicle's handling is superb. I am looking forward to seeing what Lexus has up its sleeve for the vehicle's upcoming refresh and forthcoming fourth generation/iteration of the nameplate. I am SUCH a Lexus consumer now after owning German vehicles during my teen years and early twenties and experiencing a host of mechanical and electrical problems with the vehicles (BMW and Audi). Now that I'm in my thirties, I have totally jumped ship and this is my third Lexus product and I have not at all been let down by these incredibly built vehicles.

Limiteds come with bench seats and Platinums come with captain seats. One deference between Telluride and Highlander you did mention is Highlanders are quieter that Tellurides. I find this to be another wonderful product from Toyota, albeit ‘soulless’. It was everything, it looks the part ... great reliability, etc. But something is missing. At $56,ooo+ (loaded Platinum) this ‘styleless’ generic people mover is terribly expensive. The upcoming Genesis GV80 (base) is only a small stretch more, but it will be overflowing with style and uniqueness. This Highlander will be a great SUV, but this category is getting quite tight. And I don’t think ‘reliability’ is enough at this price point, especially as many of these vehicles will be leased. I would not dismiss their Korean competitors, as they are offering quite a lot of value, too... with ‘Style’ being a “Free option”. Thanks, to both of you, for another video

Highlander is an excellent vehicle because it’s been in the market since almost 20yrs do have the legacy behind it but what Kia have done with telluride is that it covers all the flaws that highlander have that is space, price and more value with technology. Kia is also getting up there on reliability ranking and it’s all about taking care of the your vehicle apart from reliability edge because it’s been out there for so many years telluride wins and you have to drive both to compare them.

Lots to choose from among mainstream midsize SUV's. So many, in fact, that the group is really two categories: a group of smaller 2 row crossovers that range in length from 188" to 192" in length and a group of larger 3 row crossovers that range from 195" to 204" long. There are a couple of exceptions, of course. The two row VW Cross Sport is 195.5" long, half an inch greater than the Highlander. And the KIA Sorento at 189" in length offers three rows of seats. Other vehicles, however, fit rather neatly into one of the two categories. Smaller SUV's with two rows and larger midsize crossovers with three row seating. So why choose a three row SUV? Presumably because a consumer wants a vehicle with a usable third row on at least an occasional basis. Of course midsize crossovers as a whole have cramped seating in the rear. With the exceptions of the VW Atlas and Chevy Traverse with over 33" of legroom reviewers typically describe seating in the third row of most vehicles as suitable mainly for children. But there's a difference between "cozy" and ridiculously cramped. And on that scale the Highlander is by far the most ridiculously cramped. Despite adding about 2.5" of overall length to the 2020 Highlander to put it at 195" long, Toyota added virtually no space to the third row. At 27.7" of legroom it offers 2" less than the cramped Mazda CX-9. The KIA Sorento, half a foot shorter than the Highlander, has a third row with 31.7" inches of legroom, four inches more than the Toyota. To get an idea of how limited the room in the third row of the Highlander is, a Ford Mustang provides 30" of legroom in the back seat! And it doesn't stop there. Toyota makes the ludicrous claim that the Highlander has room for seven or eight passengers depending on whether a bench or individual captain chairs are fitted in the second row. (Top trim Highlanders offer only a pair of captain chairs.) But that claim is based on the fact that Toyota fits the third row with three seat belts while rivals more realistically fit their back rows with two. Claiming the third row of a Highlander can accommodate three average size human beings is a cruel joke. Finally, even if one grants that the Highlander's rear seat is suitable only for children or Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, not even all children can be reasonably accommodated. Those in infant or child seats shouldn't be seated in the third row for safety reasons and because installing/removing those seats is especially difficult. And even if an average nine year old can be accommodated a 12 or 13 year old may not be. As parents know, kids have an inconvenient habit of growing taller year after year. So even if one can fit a kid or two in the rear seat of a new Highlander, two years later that may be impossible. Apparently Toyota has recognized the Highlander's problem even if they don't admit it. While almost all other manufacturers offer two SUV's in the midsize category, a larger version with three rows and a shorter two row version, Toyota hasn't done so. Until now. The recently announced Venza (nearly 187" in length) gives those who prefer a midsize two row Toyota SUV an alternative to the Highlander. It will be interesting to see if the Venza significantly cannibalizes Highlander sales. I'm betting it will.

Why don't manufacturers offer a bench in the second row of their top trim SUV's? Simple. Market research suggests that consumers with large families at home who need room for 7 or 8 passengers typically have fewer $$$ to spend on their vehicles. Empty nesters and those with only a couple of kids at home don't need/want as much seating and prefer the luxury vibe that captain chairs in the second row provide. Therefore, bench seating is typically limited to low or mid trim vehicles. Of course, as noted in another comment, large families who need room for 7 or 8 passengers have MUCH better choices available than the Highlander.

I almost feel even on the Platinum trim that Toyota wants to reserve some of that luxury features & touches which you see on the Palisade/Telluride for the next generation Lexus RX. Hyundai seems to be more generous in this regard of giving more for the same money than Toyota does. That said the Highlander does seem more utilitarian & would likely hold up better to the daily usage and abuse families will throw at these kinds of cars. For some reason, Toyota might be pretty reliable brand but they just don’t tick all the right boxes. Always seems something is missing or something is quirky. Or perhaps, just disproportionate. Interior design could have been so much better but it’s just not as appealing for a brand new model. Camry too seem to have the same story. Great on the outside but interior is just disappointing. Perhaps, I’ll go for Honda that does best of both of the worlds.

I bought this car an pease don't compare nothing on this car to a Lexus. Doesn't compare to many flaws in this platinum version. Stick to lower models on the 35k range. 55k for this platinum version is not worth it.

It is a fail. We no longer have rear glass that can be opened separately from the rear hatch.

The Highlander is the number#1 selling SUV. So toyota don't have to do anything to improve the highlander. For now

Will never buy a car that does not allow me to option a second row bench. It's ridiculous to take away that option at the top trim.

Just saying that because it's a Toyota or do you actually have numbers to back that claim up? 2020 Highlander sales #s vs 2019 or 2020 Palisade/Telluride sales #s please.

dygardion 91 Toyota doesn’t want to make the Highlander too large since it will cannibalize the new TNGA-F Sequoia.
