Mathieu Kassovitz's provocative, compelling and landmark drama - newly restored in 4K - returns to UK cinemas from 11 September 2020 to mark the film's 25th anniversary, followed by a Limited Edition Blu-ray in November 2020 www.bfi.org.uk...
Subscribe: bit.ly/subscrib...
Simmering hostility and prejudices boil over in Mathieu Kassovitz’s provocative and compelling portrait of a Parisian housing project.
Set in the aftermath of a riot, three friends - Vinz (Vincent Cassell), Hubert (Hubert Koundè) and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui) - trapped by their economic, ethnic and community circumstances, navigate the escalating urban discontent. But, with tensions still high and the threat of violence ever-present, the trio drift towards an increasingly dangerous destiny.
Newly restored in 4K, La Haine’s scalding take on France’s social divide still carries a knockout punch. Beautifully shot in black and white by Pierre Aïm, this mid-1990s landmark remains as fresh and relevant 25 years on from its original release.

This is one of the best newly edited trailers of an already released film that I’ve ever seen. Actually, it’s one of the best edited trailers that I’ve ever seen in general.

What do you mean newly released it is 21 years old, people graduate college at that age. Any 10 year old kid can make such good edited trailers of old films. Even if re-release Gone with the Wind tomorrow it wouldn't change the fact that it is 81 years old.

This movie is one of the most universal and timeless works of art ever made. Doesn't matter what country you're from, what background you have, what culture you represent - what La Haine portrays and its message can apply anywhere. This movie is really a timeless masterpiece, the outfits they're using are basically the streetwear style today, the theme of the movie also, still relevant to this day. Unfortunately people never learn, mistakes keep being repeated, and the cicle of violence continues, and the system still is the same. La Haine still is more relevant today, than the day the film was originally released.

I watched La Haine maybe 10 years ago for the first time. I hadn't checked when it was released and I thought at the time it was new because of the subjects; violence, identity, youth. I was 18 and only just leaving my small town bubble and learning the reality of modern Western European cities. Watching the trailer again 25 years after release, it's even more relevant now than it was then. I think you could release La Haine at any decade since the 70s, probably for the next century,, and it will be relevant. One of the best films ever made for sure.

Hmmm... I'm interested in seeing what subtitles they go with, the quality of most of the previous international releases was largely dictated by that. The use of "buck" in the trailer isn't too promising; I'd have thought most people interested in seeing the movie would understand what a franc is.

If they use a slang instead of "franc" in the movie (which they probably do most of the time), then "buck" is an appropriate translation. Sure the slang "buck" is directed to US audience more than other English speaking countries, but you gotta make a choice there. But to be honest, I am french and watched the part of the trailer where the subs say "Got a buck?" many times over and can't figure out what Vinz is actually saying.

@@goonymiami I think he's saying "Non. Putain, j'ai que 5 francs pour moi", we don't hear what Said says beforehand in the trailer. As I said, I'd have thought most of the intended audience for a 25 year old black and white French film would know what a franc is/was, but I don't have too much of an issue with them just using "buck". The main issue is that previous releases of the film that did use "buck" in that scene had all-round terrible subtitles.

@@nw6231 The translations aren't americanised. For instance the character 'Asterix', doesn't get his name changed to 'Snoopy' etc.
