In my company we don’t separate installers from service in the HVAC dept. I do install, service and maintenance. Less callbacks that way. A good installer is a good service tech and vice versa. Plus, a little more care is applied when YOU are the guy that has to service it. When we started doing it this way we saw no more units installed with access doors against walls etc.

Devin G -While you’re almost correct when u say take out of their pay it’s MORE complicated than that. Laws & such. However, it does reflect on their pay. Callback & their overall “productivity” percentages are factored into yearly pay raise percentages. If they’re new, it’s expected (callbacks) as there’s a learning curve. If it’s an ongoing safety issue (work habits) and-or carelessness, of course, they get fired but they get plenty of chances before this happens. (Typically) Everyone makes mistakes and even the best “seasoned” technician faces failure every now and then. It’s my opinion that NO ONE sets out to do a bad job. Usually it’s lack of training and a responsible quality owner will have “steps” in place to help but again, if safety & carelessness is ongoing, I’ve (hired many, supervised & taught, evaluate, raised their pay to a fair wage) fired many that chose to do it their own sloppy way but really, firing is the last thing a quality co. wants to do. ✌️

@@VCadillacBlackWing It is against labor laws to dock pay of a W2 employee who is paid hourly or salary over a mistake. Cory Callovini That’s what we do at my shop. Truth is if you wind up with a factory authorized tech on the site with a lemon you better have one or you will look like an idiot, especially with the new hybrid systems or high efficiency equipment. It’s why we don’t have “install’ crews at our shop, we have ‘install techs’. We take our mechanics through state school apprenticeship, so they learn troubleshooting, electrical, pipe fitting, refrigeration, Hydronics, forced air and how to do it neatly and professionally on the job and from the classroom. Good service techs start off as great install mechanics who knew how to install it correctly for the location and for service. I’ve learned a lot from both kinds of techs that I use in my workmanship currently. Sadly, service techs rarely have the install working tools with them as an mechanic wil. Our install mechanics have the necessary tools and instruments to do startups and record them without making crap up. And.........if a job looks that bad, fer cryin out loud, it’s the company that lets it slide, by giving haven to that kind of rigged butcher a steady paycheck in the first place. Some people have no pride of Name or craftsmanship......reputation used to matter. Grab that cash n dash.

Those are plastic hangers for cpvc and copper pipe, available at Lowe's, home depot, Menards, etc, although I've never seen them installed with wire extensions before. Ideally when hanging them, you want to alternate the curved bottoms from one side of the pipe to the other, that way if the pipe was bumped or lifted somehow, it's a lot less likely to jump out of several hangers at once. It's those little common sense details, that are not being done nowadays, that are the difference between now day run of the mill installers and the experienced craftsmen of the past. Sorry but it's the truth! Also, this video is a prime example of why you always want an experienced guy to work with a rookie especially on an installation. The experienced guy wouldn't have crushed that burner tube, because he wouldn't have hurried and would have known what to watch out for. Lesson learned, never send a guy out on any job, that he or you aren't totally confident in them performing 100% correctly. That's what you will end up with. A wasted service call, with possible parts you might have to eat also, or fighting the manufacturer when they claim it was the installers fault. Your business! Jpol.

If installers are paid a flat rate for the install, that may explain some of the rushed poor quality installs. The less skilled or newer employee might have difficulty meeting the flat rate time. I have close to 45 years in trade, last 20 as Masters State licensed. It really depends on the boss’s passion and the tech having the skills, tools and materials to do it right and one last thing pride of workmanship. Simple fact is you can tell right off who knows the difference looking at their work. In my case that whole setup in that crawl space would get taken out and done neatly. I can’t understand why someone would pay that much for a house and put a crap system in it or pay someone to do it, unless it was real cheap - you deserve what you want in that case.
