I've really been enjoying this more episodic format for these revamps of the tracks as opposed to the one large video for the entire track. I feel like it gives more of a collaborative feeling

I love this video series so much! I know you're worried a lot about "dinginess" and visual sameness, so i would suggest using purple and blue hues for shadows and shading colors! since they're complimentary to yellow and orange respectively, they'll give a great contrast to make the colors *seem* brighter without actually looking any different. even with the bricks you currently have-- injecting slight blue and purple tints into them might make the whole track feel brighter. I'm not a blender person, but this tends to work wonders with my 2D art! i wish you luck making this masterpiece! it looks beautiful so far!

Yep, hue shifting is great, I wonder how it'd be done in 3D though. I guess using that ambient occlusion mentionned in a previous video, by having shadows be dark blue/purple instead of black (like when he changed water's to white to simulate contact with the track)?

A think a great way to spruce up delfino square is by adding flag lines that go across the building like in toad harbor, they’re pretty simple and would make it feel more vibrant.
@Frogmood4 ай бұрын
I think the problem you're running into with the colors is that you're trying to make everything look /too/ cohesive. If you blend things together too much, you're invariably gonna end up with muddy brown soup. The green moss in the bricks, for example, adds some much needed contrast. I would try experimenting with some complimentary colors, rather than trying to shift everything to the yellow-brown-white side of things.

Mom! Bring the camera! I'm in a Charlie's Café video! Glad to see my suggestion helped here, haha! This series is going pretty well and it's also kinda addictive, lol. It would be cool if all of this was made into a whole video when the model reaches it's final stage. Keep it up, Charlie!

Coming along fantastic so far!! To add onto someone else’s comment about color variation and the moss in the bricks, I think something else that has the potential to look really nice is some vines/moss on the buildings! I know you just removed the moss brick texture from one of them as not to use the same material as the road but I think stuff like that makes it feel nice and lived in, while adding some color variation :)
@skykittenpuppy4 ай бұрын
the new tree model from splatoon is definitely the right direction to go, but it may be worth adding a solid shell inside thats just plain orange, so you cant see directly through whats meant to be a bushy tree :D

3DS wuhu island has some roofing textures that you could look at, as well as curved bricks in the UVs for the corner at 2:24. Maybe have a set of "diagonal bricks" to smooth out the transition between directions. you could also put different colored awnings on the windows to help differentiate/decorate the buildings.

The track is coming along nicely! The texture at 3:59, in my opinion, look pretty good for the yellow buildings.

This project has become a highlight of my weeks, and as someone that's played around with Blender a significant amount I can't say I wouldn't want to try something similar. So here's a little tip from someone that's been in the transform trenches awhile: Use the 3D cursor to your advantage as a transform point. A good example is the shutters, you could have much more easily closed them by selecting the verts against the wall, hitting Shift+S, and selecting "Cursor to Selected" from that menu. Then, you could select the 3D Cursor as the transform origin and rotate the entire shutter on the Z axis. Keep that in mind if you want to add more shutter variation, and I'm sure it'll come in handy somewhere else along the line as well.

The white buildings need more seperations instead of just being one big flat wall. Maybe a line of bricks in the middle? Also just add some like, decorative stuff to it. Maybe a flower bed by one of the upper windows? Some ivy clinging to the side like you did on the balconies?

The trees look pretty cool now! Honestly I don't think everything needs that yellow or orange tint. I think the little weeds on the road are fine bring green. Though you could use Photoshop color balancing tools to make them lean a bit more towards yellow

Yes! More trees!!! Maybe try to replicate base game 8 trees. For the road, you can add slight orange/yellow hues to some of the bricks. Also, could attempt to remesh the windows.

One thing that might help your selections in Photoshop is [Select > Color Range...]! It allows you to use the eyedropper tool to pick any color in your image and find all similar or identical colors around it, which would be PERFECT for selecting that moss between the bricks. It also has a few parameters you can dial in to change how specific or scattered or continuous that color selection is. Also, when you mentioned using a white Color overlay to brighten the road texture, have you experimented with the Curves adjustment layer? It allows you to dial in the exposure and dynamic range of your image without losing the lights and the darks, which seems like it could be helpful at various points in this project. I like that you're doing the short episodes with this track, it's fun to see it evolve based on the community feedback.

I think a part of the problem you’re facing is that all the bricks are the same color. If you tried making some random bricks a slightly different color it could help make it feel more alive. You’d probably have to find a new texture for the grey buildings though.

If you want a more vibrant starting line, more "old city like" maybe you could get rid of some of the billboards on both sides of the street and replace it with planters, fences, benches, etc... this details would help for it to be more like a street and less like a road. It brings some life to it just like the fontain does :)

to get the magic wand tool to work on ps, there should be a little section at the top above the canvas labeled "tolerance" and a number next to it. just bring up the tolerance by clicking on the number and changing it and it should select a wider color threshold.

Ya think for "doing something Christmas-y in Coconut Mall", the Vanilla Lake winter clothing store will be reopen for the holiday? 🙃 Also, why not put up a few store signs around the market section (which is just before the raising bridge rounding the finish line) as well as some products - mainly a few fruits and iced beverage stuff since Delfino Square is an obvious ref to Super Mario Sunshine. Plus, one of the arrow signs was mostly obscuring one of the front doors; might wanna fix that. 😅

What if you added leaves to the texture of the roads and alleys? most the track would have scattered leaves, with the sides having a lot more. that could add color and realism to the track, as leaves would inevitably tear away from the trees and land on the road as racers drive past them at high speeds.

i like these videos, i havent watched every single one of these so idk if you tried this yet but have you ever thought about using vertex colors? you could get some nice color variations by painting the bottom or top of the buildings only which would add a nice gradient to it, you can also paint the floors for color variation or even simulate simple shadows, another cool thing that you might have done it already by the looks of it, is baking ambient occlusion into vertex colors, since you added a lot of geometry like doors and windows, you can bake ambient occlusion into the vertex colors to simulate the lack of light when corners are near others

For the grassy area after the drawbridge, I think you could add some more trees and greenery in general. Kinda like a forest, as seen in the Tour remake of DS Mario Circuit. There should also be more bushes/shrubs as well as some benches near the road with spectators sitting on them. This would make the area feel way more alive and less plain. Anyways, love this episodic video style! It's so exciting to help improving the track as a community ❤

You want to do spooky videos for October? How about you take a break with DS Delphino Square, and remaster a spooky track from the same game? I’m thinking, DS Luigi’s Mansion. It’s already got a Tour port, so it’d be an easy texture change compared to the beast that is DS Delphino Square.
