D’Angelo is someone who I have so much respect for. He gives a fair and balanced take on topics. He addressed Cody Ko in the same way, giving him far more grace than I personally believe he deserves, but also not giving him a way to weasel out of addressing it. He’s been highly critical of Tana in the past, but he was absolutely spot on when he said that the way people are treating her sends a message that only certain people deserve to tell their story and that’s not okay. 💗

Tana told her story and said she does not hold any trauma. Shouldn't it end there? It should just be between Tana and Cody Ko. Everyone else is a third party. Why is D'Angelo stirring the pot so much. He really wants to be in the center of attention and its embarrassing.

Basically the “perfect victim” narrative really. I’m not a fan of Tana either since she has done and said some really egregious things in the past, but I’m willing to put that aside and see that she’s obviously been tryin to tell folks about this for years and yet nobody will listen to her because she’s “unlikable”. It really doesn’t matter how unlikable she is honestly, if the allegations she laid against Cody are true (and it’s looking all the more likely with all the information that D’Angelo brought to light that it is), then he basically committed statutory rape and got away with it, which absolutely should get called out

In my high school classroom debates, people were assigned to the side they had to defend at random. They were about defending *a* position, not specifically the one you liked. iirc there were also student-led ones where you chose a topic you actually liked and someone either volunteered or was randomly assigned to defend against you, which again would not create the othering issue because it's essentially an exercise in eloquent BSing if you don't agree with the assigned position, trying to trip up the other person. In the case of Rep vs Dem whole-class debate they'd split us 50/50, and people would have to work with whatever they were dealt. We got some people complaining they didn't actually agree, but not enough to make anyone feel obligated to declare their true stance.

@@yalldumb2387 you sweet summer child. Child weddings to much older people definitely happen, especially in ultra religious circles between child brides and much older men. A thirteen-year old bride with a thirty-year old is not unheard of. The worst thing about it is that while minors are allowed to be married, and like you said, without a minimum age in ten states (often just with the consent of the parents), they are not allowed to seek a divorce until they're eighteen. It was a discussion surrounding all the “norms” that Trump was just ignoring, up to and including the emoluments clause. Just listen to how she’s talking about it. Something defenders of people like Cody Ko will always say is "well the age of consent is 16 in (random state/country)" Yet they never acknowledge the fact that the majority of North America and Europe has other sanctions related to consent that are more complex than just a number. The age difference and prior relationship dynamics also play a major role in consent laws. Let's use Canada for example: A lot of people think the age of consent here is sixteen. According to the law however, the *unrestricted age of consent* is actually eighteen here. At 16 years old minors in Canada can give consent so long as their partner isn't in a position of power or authority over them. At ages 14-15 they can consent so long as the age gap does not exceed 4 years, and for children aged 12-13 that gap is reduced to 2 years. Being *almost* old enough to consent doesn't matter. Especially when there's already laws in place with the sole purpose of addressing those "so close it shouldn't even matter" type scenarios that people are trying to paint this out to be.
@michaelh878
@michaelh878 Ай бұрын
It is not just about the law. The age of consent is 16 where I am too but anyone in their mid twenties going after teenagers would be seen as really creepy and be ostracized by friends and family (unless they are really weird too).
@LadyUndeath
@LadyUndeath Ай бұрын
@@michaelh878 Absolutely, 100% agree! I've been in a couple situations like Tana's throughout my time in highschool, and I remember thinking "wow parents & teachers were right, I'm *actually* really mature for my age." When in reality the 20+ y/o dudes pursuing me were just creeps who couldn't (or even worse, didn't want to) pull girls their own age. Now that I'm in my mid 20s just the thought of hooking up with someone who's still in HS grosses me out so much that I get goosebumps. To clarify a bit; my initial comment about the law was meant to point out the signature hypocrisy and/or ignorance of creep-defenders. Mainly by noting how those people often don't really know about the laws they're using as excuses to minimize the severity.

@@LadyUndeath "Now that I'm in my mid 20s just the thought of hooking up with someone who's still in HS grosses me out so much that I get goosebumps." To be fair, you're a woman. Most women in their mid twenties aren't even attracted to 19/20 year old guys, let alone guys that are in grade 12. Also, studies show that the the pre frontal cortext of the average 17 year old girl is on the same level as the pre frontal cortext of the average 20 year old guy. I do think Cody is outside of the range where it's appropriate but online age gap discourse has really become pretty cringe inducing lately/detached from reality and doesn't take individuals into account.

I find the story about the guy who died at the rally fascinating, because there's such a huge gap between the heinous person his social media profile portrays him as, and the 'heroic firefighter saving his family' that he's being mourned as. That's not to say either of these are wrong, or cancel each other out, but it stands-out to me as an example of how people can feel like the internet is the right place for them to let-out the horrible person they keep locked-up inside, instead of ever reflecting on what drives that part of themselves. Practically my entire childhood I was told that I was mature for my age, whilst also being the victim of harsh bullying. Once I become the age where I was romantically interested in others, I was also outcast. But adults around me always said that the boys my age just didn't "appreciate" me yet. And told me that older men would. It's weird to think about that now but as a kid it didn't seem strange. However this normalization as well as seeing young teens date older men in media made me feel like this was acceptable. I was 15/16/17 dating men in their twenties to fourties at the time. I felt special and wanted. I thought it was okay because my countries allows you to legally date anyone once you turn 16. There is a lot as an adult I have to work through, Alot of self blame. One of the things I wish I noticed earlier however was the secrecy of it all. If dating a 30 year old was totally fine at 16 then WHY were they always so adamant that I keep it a secret? It was completely legal so their were no repercussions there. But if it was completely fine to date them (like they repeatedly told me) then they wouldn't have had me lie to all their friends and say that I'm older than I was.

It’s terrifying to be this close as neighbours and watch what feels like a country dividing. More and more in politics it feels like both the people and the politicians forget their roles in society. Government and politicians are meant to serve the people of the country, instead in America they are treated as weird celebrities or gods for some Trump fans. like the one comment you read said, too many people want to brush off the Cody Ko situation because "its Tana" but i cannot emphasize enough how heavily this plays into the "perfect victim" narrative. Even if Tana consented- thats what age of consent laws are for. she legally COULD NOT give consent to a man 8 years her senior. What Cody Ko allegedly did is illegal. she was a child, and Cody allegedly knew that, *thanked* someone for letting him know, *SLEPT WITH HER ANYWAYS* , and then tried to guilt Tana by texting her saying his wedding was coming up, etc., As a current 25 year old myself its absolutely inexcusable and unfathomable to me. And Cody censoring comment on his channels and letting everyone comment hate on his wife Kelsey's channel is an extra level of icky. edit: i didnt say this originally because its pure speculation but in Tana's statements it felt there was an implication that this wasnt a one time thing. at one point she said she was "17,18" when they hooked up. i feel this means they hooked up for a few months from the time she was 17 until sometime after she turned 18 because otherwise she's very consistent that they hooked up when she was 17, plus then doing collabs means they were hanging out more than just the time Gabby Hannah saw them at a party

I'm so glad that you talked about the Cody/Tana situation. This is a backhanded compliment, but it needs to be said: big channels with reach to the mainstream of KZbin, like yours, are now speaking about it because D'Angelo called y'all out, I'm glad you stepped up to the plate. No, I will not debate how big channels like Phil and MoistCritikal "had to wait for evidence" or whatever in replies. TeaSpill and SpillSesh, the two biggest tea channels, talked about it a month ago, but it wasn't picked up on because it was probably viewed as "gossip" Why did it take D'Angelo making a video for it to be taken seriously?

Honestly whether or not big and small creators knew, Tana never stayed quite about this. But people who followed her ignored it and people who didn't follow her insulted her or called her a liar.

@@mahajabeenhossain Yeah, i get it. People dismissed her claims because she has a bad reputation, which is gross but expected of the internet. In the end, i don't think there was a grand conspiracy by big commentary channel to keep this hidden, but more of a lack of knowledge of the story and a lack of interest to learn about it because of the victim's reputation. Its kind of the opposite of the Dr. disrespect talking to minors situation. It was a 4 year saga with everyone speculating what the reason of his ban was, and then BOOM, he's a pedo. I feel like Tana's story never really left her circle?, while Dr. disrespect was the most popular streamer in the world at one point, so his ban made international news.

The Cody ko situation shows how biased people can be to victims of sex/abuse crimes when the accused are well liked by the community. I work with victims of abuse related crimes for work and work closely with neighborhood victim advocacies, and we have sadly become accustomed to hearing that they don't want to come forward to friends/family or law enforcement because the person who abuses them is beloved by the community. If Cody Ko was someone else, the internet would hopefully not be so divided. This situation is so important to acknowledge and look at; not only for Tana's sake, but for other victims whose abuser has sway over a wider range of people (whether it's strangers on the internet or with community/family members). A common reason why some serial abusers get away with things for so long often includes having a good respected outward image.

Re Cody Co/Tana: I live in a country where the age of consent is 16, you can get married at 16 (without parental approval), you can own a house at 16, you can vote in local and national elections at 16. With the exception of buying alcohol and serving on a jury (both 18), you are legally considered an adult at 16 in almost every way. I get that this is not the case in the US, but it just seems so strange to me. In my country, a 25 year old sleeping with a 17 year old would be a non-issue. I'm not saying one way is better than the other, just that it's interesting how in certain places where something is illegal and deeply frowned upon is seen as whatever in another place. Hey phil, just to give some context for the classroom thing, it's a common classroom icebreaker for heavier topics because what it does is forces people to acknowledge that big labels aren't perfect. How it generally goes is you ask the class to split into how they'd identify, right left, repub demo, whatever. Then, you start asking specifically policy questions, and have people move to the different sides depending on the things they agree or disagree with. The point is to see that people pretty much always have SOMETHING that they switch sides on, and it's suppose to prove that we're more complex people. Someone being completely 100% on one side all the time is pretty rare cause the project is pretty much designed to try and make people bounce back and forth to get them to think about others in a more complex way and encourage their thinking concerning the topics.
