I was on my way through London at Heathrow heading back to the US 4 days ago (9/28/22) and of course I had to go into the Watches of Switzerland in the International terminal. Finally got to see the Ranger in person (my Tudor AD sucks and rarely ever has stock). They had the bracelet version and with the power of my US dollar (sorry UK) I was able to buy it at a really good price. I wrapped it up and took it home. Finally on wrist I will say that this is an impressive watch in my mind. I know this is supposed to be a re-interpretation of an older Ranger but I can't help but think of the Rolex Explorer 1016 from the past. This may not be a Tudor hit. I think the 39mm Pelagos and Black Bay Pro have taken that role, but it is a really solid contender for people looking for a great field watch, as long as they don't listen to the negative reviews. From a male perspective this watch is like a really nice looking woman who doesn't wear a lot of make-up and puts on nice, but not flashy clothing or jewelry, and can carry a very interesting conversation. At the end of a date you just want her! That's the girl I have and so is this Ranger.
@mrfuriouser Жыл бұрын
Wonderful anecdote- quite apropos! She may not be a "supermodel" but she wouldn't wish to be one, either. She is beautifully well-rounded and someone you WANT to spend time with, doing all types of things...and you wouldn't trade her for the world.
@typebflieger2 жыл бұрын
Lol at all the commenters who want something “exciting” as if they’ve never seen a shot of a Tudor Ranger before. Did you guys seriously think it was going to have polished applied markers and shiny gold bits all over the case? Tudor has that already. It’s called the entire Black Bay line. Seriously, if you people were expecting anything remotely resembling bling, I don’t know what to tell you except to go see the latest Omega releases… Re the “It looks cheap” comments. 😂 It came out the other day and 99.999% of you haven’t handled one. But, sure, you’re the experts! I mean, give it a minute. I’m reserving judgement until I see one at the AD.
@BruceWilliams2 жыл бұрын
Most naysayers don't 1) Understand the history of the Ranger 2) don't have realistic expectations or 3) sometimes don't have any idea of what they want and 4) will decide they like it after seeing it in person or seeing a good deal on a pre-owned example.
@michaelfierman32562 жыл бұрын
My point really goes to the point of why even make a “new” Ranger, and yes TBF, if they are going to make one, why not have at least something “exciting” about it? No one, or at least not me, is asking for bling. How about some proportion to the dial. Way too much empty space. And what’s up with the faux patina? Why not have a clean white? This is a fail. Falling into the category of “why bother?”
@typebflieger2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelfierman3256 First off, I didn’t see your other comment until just now, so I want you to know I wasn’t singling you out, my friend. I believe they made this watch for the many people who want a watch like this. I’d argue that there are enough exciting pieces in the rest of their collection, and the Ranger was never going to be the watch to take that excitement to new levels. Tudor, smartly, knew what this watch was and what audience it was for, and didn’t try to make more out of it. NSOW said in his video: “nobody was asking for this.” What? I’ve heard people asking for a smaller version of the discontinued 41mm for years… People like me, who (as you know all too well) don’t want flash.
@typebflieger2 жыл бұрын
@@BruceWilliams Well said! Nobody is obligated to like this watch, but I keep hearing all kinds of weird suggestions for what would make it better (a triangle at 12, applied markers, a bezel!) and what people are describing is some version of a Black Bay. All told, the reaction to this fairly inoffensive under-the-radar everyday watch has been unusually hysterical.
@mdesmet91112 жыл бұрын
@@michaelfierman3256 I will pick a watch with much 'empty space' on the dial over one with a 'cluttered' dial every day. There are several reasons for the faux patina; it's a heritage model, the clean white would look too hard on the matt black dial, it would conflict with the retro looking numerals and perhaps most important, it would be more of a direct competitor for the Explorer. So, it's actually a very smart design. I understand you may not like it, but that doesn't make it a fail. Tudor doesn't design watches for you, but for a target audience and although many people may not like it, many others probably will. I already own a 39mm Explorer and I'll probably get me a Ranger too, which I wouldn't do if they were 90% the same.

I’m a big fan of 3 hand time only watches. This is a big improvement over the previous version. The real life pictures I’ve seen of the watch look way better than the renders. Only thing I don’t like is the yellowish lume and possibly the red tipped second hand so I’d like to see this in the metal to make a final conclusion. Now hoping Tudor will make a t-fit clasp for BB58 owners to purchase for their bracelets.

I like it although I've not seen one in the flesh. A slight improvement could be using applied sliced ceramic cheese numerals and markers similar to the BB Pro. I will reserve judgement till I see one at the AD. BUT, an in house movement in a Tudor for the price it sure looks pretty good value. The crystal reflection seems like a thing on the BB line as well but isn't a huge issue for me from personal experience.

A beautiful watch, Bruce. For comparison, I own the 41mm 79910 Heritage Ranger and I simply adore it (7.5” wrist). For me, the larger size is the perfect size for a field watch, if that is what it is actually used for (as I do). The dial is highly visible in all conditions and it takes a hammering in its stride. The ETA is easily, and cheaply, maintained and I love the way how it wears its “battle scars” proudly, making it simply more adorable. It was highly discounted after being discontinued and it therefore does not bother me that it gets a fair amount of abuse. I will definitely be buying the 79950 as well as this is my preferred style of watch; but I can foresee it being much more of a ‘desk fieldie’/formal watch rather than an actual tool watch. This is emphasized visually by the fact that it does not have drilled lugs. Thanks for the video.

Hi Bruce I really like your videos because you share your perspective instead of just stating the specs. Can you please do a video to discuss the popularity of Rolex and the hype that is causing an increase in watch robberies across the US, especially in California? I feel like many people work hard to own a Rolex but then realized how dangerous it is to wear them in public. The watch then just gets stored to keep safe. What are your thoughts about wearing luxury watch in public in the current climate? I know many people who own a Rolex but won't wear them because of fear for their safety.

I agree that it's not a fair or appropriate comparison vs the newer Rolex Explorer.. they are totally different watches imho..closest comparison would be the older 1016 Explorer that obviously isn't available new anymore. Next best comparison would probably be the IWC Spitfire in terms of the field watch category, though the Spitfire is more of a pilot watch aesthetic. The Ranger fills the well-made field watch niche pretty well I think, at a great price and value.

This is my favorite release from Tudor to date. In my opinion, it just doesn’t get any better than the 1016 or the classic Ranger. Great design is great design. Now give it to me with a 36mm option.

This really is Tooltastic. I agree it’s way more of a tool watch than the Explorer 1 (which I love as well). This looks amazing on the fabric / rubber strap.

The design of this model was just what I was looking for in my next watch. The clean unassuming face with a brushed steel case/bracelet and solid build quality that doesn't attract attention. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't like owning an Explorer 36mm also. I think they're completely different watches. The Rolex is more refined and the Tudor more robust The Ranger fits my style of a luxury daily driver like a Toyota Land Cruiser, well done Tudor.

I really like this offering and I will check it out at my local dealer when I have an opportunity. I had the previous iteration Ranger. I loved its dial but was never a fan of the case at 41mm and the lug design. This model seems to hit a lot of the right notes with the new case size and lugs similar to the black bay's design. I wish they would have stayed with a completely red seconds hand. I also think they would have maintained its simplicity if they would have polished the sides for a little bit of contrast. The dial would look cool if they printed "self winding" in the arching fashion as done for the Black Bays with T600 movement instead of the straight across "ranger".

Some may say that this new Tudor Ranger is bland. If so, it's always been bland. But the improvements that were made this watch are outstanding. If Tudor critics are going to criticize this Ranger for what it has become don't they have to go after the Black Bay 58 for the same reason. But funny, I didn't hear critics say much in the negative about the BB58. Did you hear; Gee, lazy design, all they did was make the BB a little smaller and thinner, and it's kinda bland because they didn''t change the design/color from the BB41? No, you didn't hear that. But I guess the Ranger is not the great fan favorite so critics will gang up on the poor Ranger. But the Ranger will not falter, will not back down, will stand up straight, fight back, and win the day!!!! From now on July 8th will be known Around the World as Independence Day for the Ranger! I tried on the last version and I really didn’t like it’s green markers and far too big spoiled it for me. I love the bracelet and the case is nice on this version but it’s annoying that it’s missing the smiley self winding logo and I’m worried that the markers are green. What really bothers me is it hasn’t got a date function, any watch without a date function should not pretend to be a tool watch.

The dial lacks something. Maybe because all the markings are just printed, which is a bit ‘cheap’? It’s not boring, but it’s not exciting either. Perhaps it appears to be meh to some because of the black dial and recycled handset (it’s only one model, just with different strap options)? Tudor could/should have given it a bit of fizz eg an applied Tudor rose logo?

Printed because that is the history of the Ranger and Explorer. Its all about simplistic contrast and not excitment

@@BruceWilliams OK, but I don’t understand what you meant when you said “this is exciting”? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not slagging this off, I just think something like the new 38mm Khaki Field Titanium Automatic with green dial (H70205860) is far more interesting visually and practically useable as a field watch because of its more attainable price (lower in-use risk) whilst doing everything the Ranger does as far as I can see. I’d be interested in your thoughts when you get the change to get one in the hand. Thanks. 👍

@@robdickson5902 So, when Bruce said, “I don’t think this is boring at all, I think this is great, I think this is exciting” and yet he also thinks it’s not about excitement…which “exactly” are you referring to? Any new release needs to have *some* fizz; far from being “negative” the reaction reaction to the Ranger has been indifferent (if you want ‘negative’ see what people have to say about the new Superocean), which is in some ways worse. I don’t dislike it, but if someone put £2,500 in my hand I wouldn’t feel like buying it either. Maybe that’s why Tudor discontinued the last Ranger not that long ago?

@@borassictime918 Hi. My "exactly" was in reference to Bruce's explanation of the printed dial. It is common to the Vintage Rangers, the 2014 release Heritage Ranger, and now this new Ranger.

Great specs, well built but the problem with this model clearly is the lack of appeal. There is something about this dial which is simple alright, but lacks this x factor the explorer or khaki field do have imho.
