The Arizona Game and Fish Department is announcing the results of a necropsy done on a bear that killed a man in Groom Creek, a community just south of Prescott.
The victim, Steven Jackson, was building a cabin at the time. He was sitting in a chair on his property when he was attacked by an adult male bear, according to Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes.
"Neighbors responded they heard him yelling, calling for help, they tried to get the bear to stop attacking him," said Sheriff Rhodes.
Rhodes says the bear "was in the process of consuming him" before a neighbor shot and killed the animal.

I have lived in a rural area for 27 years now and last year a small black bear was the woods between all our properties. Immediately after we found out, all the neighbors removed any trash cans from outdoors to in our garages or out buildings, removed bird feeders, deer licks and feeders and any food sources. The bear left without any problems. It wasn't very big and the wildlife ranger advised us that it was wandering from it's normal area and probably looking for food. It took all our efforts to get this outcome. We all know we live where wild animals roam. They are not our pets or domesticated. We live on a mountain and all have 5 to 10 acres each.

Kudo’s to all of you. We have 40 acres and had 1-2 black colored bears in the woods. My cousin feeds wild cats and attracts the bears. One was at his window so we kept out dogs in/or leashed by our side at all times! We could hear him breaking down brush & small trees 🤯🫣😜 This bear must have been hungry and I wonder if Mr. Jackson suddenly moved or yelled or something. So very sad fir both!

@@ginaspurlding8590 That's horrendous and extremely dangerous. I don't know how the laws are where you live or the wildlife rangers are, but I have heard a couple cases where neighbors in one case and friends of an old woman notified the wildlife rangers and in the neighbors case, they were given a written warning with orders to cease and desist leaving food and scraps out. When that wasn't taken seriously, they came back and ticketed them and they had to go to court and face charges and fines. The elderly woman had been feeding what she called her bears for years. This was Alaska and the rangers came out to her place to warn her too and planned to take further action. Before they could, the bears she considered hers were black bears and other than scratching up her car all over hadn't ever shown any aggression. But a Kodiak or grizzly bear (I can't remember which it was) had followed the smell of the food and the other bears and attacked, killed and ate most of her. It's worth a try. The first group of neighbors took video with their phones of the people putting out the food and had documents proving the bears around the area. They sought protective orders because they feared for their lives and their childrens and grandchildren's lives. It's worth some phone calls and trying. I pray you stay safe and something can be done.

@@oh_k8 Have you ever looked at google maps or google earth in satellite mode and seen all of the vacant land on earth? If you zoom out, you can see that even the big cities are tiny in comparison to the 2.4 billion acres called United States. Alaska accounts for more than 17% of the total acres in the United States. Alaska has more acres than Texas, California & Montana combined. Texas could fit into Alaska 2 times, and every human on earth could easily live in Texas and have their own home, with a yard. This planet is not overpopulated. while some believe 7 billion represents an overcrowded planet, Per Square Mile shows that we're far from too dense. Theoretically, all 7 billion of us could easily fit in a Texas-sized city that is as dense as New York City, keeping in mind that Texas could fit into Alaska 2 times. In short you have been lied to and duped by the government. The bear in this video was not overcrowded by the man building the cabin. Bears are natural born killing machines, not fur babies. That bear was eating the man alive, as they are instantaneous eaters. That bear was standing on this man and using brute force to rip skin, fat, and muscle from his bones, all the while the man screaming in horror. That bear would gladly do you the same way. There are humans that would kill you much the same way in your tiny little speck of a city. You need to start thinking with your brain, and stop being programmed.

When she said “never run away from a bear” I recalled my black bear encounter many years ago when I was mountain biking. I was riding a trail in western PA near where I live that I had ridden many times before and since, and knew it well. It was on a level section of tight rocky singletrack with the hill sloping steeply down to my right. I came fast around a blind turn and (slammed the brakes) saw a cub standing in the middle of the trail not 20 feet in front of me. I will never forget the look on the cub’s face when it saw me: “Oh, hello there..” Not scared, just curious. I was thinking “oh f**k! and then a big black head appeared on the right. The momma bear poked her head through the brush as she was climbing up onto the trail, saw me, got spooked and ducked back into the brush. She ducked. back. into. the. brush. (!!!) Prior to this I heard many times about how you should never run from a bear. And of course I did not even think about it as I flipped my bike around and pedaled fast as I was able. I don’t know for sure but I think I was already around that blind turn and out of her view by the time she got up onto the trail to check on her cub. Only when I got back to my car did I think that was probably not the right thing to do but I literally had a half a second to choose.

It's just beyond comprehension. I am shocked by the people who leave food or garbage out overnight, when they're camping. Unfortunately, I think when these occurrences are rare humans in general take that fact for granted. I'm not saying Mr. Jackson did, but many people do and they usually survive the encounter without incident until someone doesn't. We see "cute" videos from people living in areas with bears in their yards, on their porches etc. and it reinforces the fact that most bears are not out to get humans and will retreat if the human looks or sounds aggressive. To me these actions are making the bears more comfortable around humans and the more comfortable they get the more dangerous it becomes for both them and humans. It has the potential to cost both a human and the bear to lose their lives. Our best defense is for bears to keep their natural fear of humans so they want to avoid us. If your desire is a great closeup photo--get a better camera setup that allows you to remain at a safe distance. Remember that if you have a "relationship" or an "understanding" that seems to work with a local bear that frequents your home, that bear didn't make you any promises. Most importantly, think about the next human that bear may encounter who doesn't react to it in the same manner you do and what the consequences of that might be.

Here in PA we have black bears on the high end over 800 lbs. I live rurally and have only "seen" them twice in my yard in over 20 years (not counting the bear scat that lets me know they pass through more often). The scarier sighting was when I was out in the yard gardening when a 400 lb male ran across the field and into my yard and stopped behind a tree before moving into the woods. The game warden had beem around due to several sightings of that particular bear and found out a woman about 1/2 mile down the road (who fed a growing colony of feral cats) had been putting food out "for the bear" too and the bear was sticking around for the free food. Luckily that stopped and he eventually moved on a few days later. A black bears range can be about 50 miles.

None we ever a problem, except for maybe a few who got into trash on the night we put it out for pick-up. During bear season we now put it out in the morning just before the trucks come through. Other than that, we've had some cubs run up and play on the deck when mom was walking through the yard, porch as well. We've been outside when bears have passed through and they rarely even look at us. Sadly, our house was built in the woods where it was likely a very old bear path to and from the wild and green belt land. They don't hang out, they just walk on through. Respect them and they respect you. What happened to this man may never be known. Something went wrong, for whatever reason. Best to just keep a distance. The loss of mega-fauna that will result (shooting domesticated bears) is devastating to forest health. We need Healthy herds of deer & elk & bears, wolves to fertilize the forest soil, to thin the forest creating healthy huge trees, therefore reducing fire-starting kindling from unnatural woods. I wouldn’t even feed birds squirrels birdseed cause of the dependency it creates which weakens the animals. And what happens if we suddenly stop feeding them, that’s cruel cause massive numbers would starve. Not to mention the bear attraction. Man, humans meddle in unnatural ways and we hope it doesn’t cause problems beyond ourselves.

There’s no way to know for sure that this bear was actually healthy. It’s possible it was but just as possible that a serious health issue was missed. They don’t spend the money to to do full hormonal work ups and full and extensive toxicity tests on tissue samples. It’s just the basics that can miss many health issues. Not saying they are terrible for not doing it but they could have been a lot more clear that they didn’t know to a certainty that the bear was healthy. Just to the best of their knowledge from the data they collected they didn’t find any obvious evidence of illness. That’s a more accurate description. I wish the question of toxicity samples hadn’t been referred to as cocaine bear. There are many toxins both natural and synthetic that can affect behavior.

It’s more like black bears are moving into our homes. Black bear populations are exploding in North America. They’re like coyotes. They’re thriving on all the high calorie food they get around human settlements. A bear would have to eat 5,000 acorns to get the equivalent calories it can get out of one bowl of dog food left on a porch. Look up any state or region that has black bears and the story will be the same, black bears are doing well all over. So it’s pretty hard to stay out of black bear habitat when their population numbers are exploding and they’re expanding their territory all over of the NA continent.

I'm no expert by any means.. but have been an animal lover especially predators my entire life! I also hunt! What I've learned throughout fourty plus years of hunting and being in the woods or hiking and camping.. bears typically head the opposite direction once they see hear or smell humans. They don't live long hanging around people! Most black bear attacks are young male bears. Age 2 to 3 years old and it's a predatory attack! Why? This age group hasn't learned to stay away from people. The get chased away by their mothers at 18 months and fight scratch and claw to find their own territory. Along comes a person.. the bears lack of no better and curiosity gets the best of him as he investigates with the intention to drive you away and or prey on you! Which is still rare.. it's not like bears are lurking around every bush and tree waiting for us to come by :)

There is still a simple explanation and that is the bear had bad eyesight. I was hoping to see they checked that but did not. If the bear had bad eyesight and wandered near the man not knowing the man was there, any sudden move by the human could trigger an instantaneous reflex attack from the bear. And once he tasted blood it was all over. I once sneaked up on a sleeping dog and when I poked him he reacted out of fear, instantly biting my hand. My fault, but a startled animal will respond the best way they know how.

I live in an area where bears are constantly in my yard and I live in town, not near the mountains. I never leave anything out for them to get into not so my neighbors, but the problem is because people don't scare them off or let them know as another predator, hey this is my territory, they make it their territory and lose all fear of people. Once they are over habituated like that and lose their fear of humans, you've got a problem on your hand and there's little you're gonna be able to do to make them move on at that point. You can live alongside wildlife for sure, especially when you're on their turf in the mountains and forests you had better respect it, but if you have a settlement of people, you've claimed that territory and it is no longer the bears and they no longer need to be there habitually. Sad but true for the bears. You can't have both and not expect it to go south at some point. This ain't Disney, bears and humans are two predators competing; you can't be neighbors and not expect someone to go wrong. It's easy for people who never interact with such a threat to be a bleeding heart and say "it was their land first! Be friends!" Yea that's not how nature has worked for any point in it's existence. You can't have two predators on the same plot of land without conflict. Bear walking into another bear's territory is gonna result in a huge fight too.

"Acting as a wild animal in a wild place.." sums the situation succinctly! So many people raised on Disney and cute social media videos seem to adopt a Timothy Treadwell attitude toward bears despite the fate such an attitude toward Brown bears brought to Mr Treadwell and Ms Huguenard.

@@rsvpevents6780 Bear spray does have a few percent failure rate. But it's better than nothing so they say. i personally would also carry a side arm that is the right kind and fast to grab and use. Also semi- auto as it usuallytakes more than one shot for bear. Several in fact. They are hard to kill and can bleed a long time before disabled. Have to hit them in the right places. What really helps is , not to live isolated but among people you trust . to watch your back.

People act like animals can't learn. My dogs learn from each other, from me and from their environment. This was a 10yr old "experienced" bear with learned experiences of hunger cycles to get aggressive to feed itself. It had multiple fighting experiences during mating season of bears bigger than the victim. A 10yr old bear will also eat the cubs of another bear. A human wouldn't be far off from the previous learning experiences. We WILL see a lot more of these so called "infrequent" events. The government employees are trained to say things so the general public is not alarmed. People should use their heads and not be fooled into an ambush while hiking or biking. Even if they live, they could be greatly disfigured or disabled for life.

My feeling is this man had positive interactions with other wild bears on his property - and let his guard down. If he truly saw the bear approaching in a threatening manner, it would have taken all of a few seconds to get off the porch and into his house for safety. I think he presumed the bear would do nothing, as with past encounters, and allowed it to get too close - then he stood up and the bear then considered him a threat.

Predatory black bear….our family has encountered them twice. We learned that they are persistent and capable hunters of humans. We also learned to never wear earbuds in bear country and to always carry bear deterrents with us at all times. Fortunately none of our family was hurt or killed. We may be the top of the food chain but we still have to be observant and careful when hiking or camping in the wilderness.

Was this man sitting in a field near his home drinking coffee in a chair when the bear approached the back of him? I heard this man was building his house there. Was he working on the house previously outside and never saw bears? Also, she mentioned that the lifespan of an adult black bear is about 10 years old which she said he might have been. I’m wondering if at that age a bear can get dementia like humans and lose their faculties which might have caused the bear to attack the man.

In Mount Lemmon area in above Tucson, there was an attack on a girl who is menstruating. The smell of that drew the bear who attacked her, and he ended up, scalping her as he was grabbing her to drag her away. Apparently, the smell of blood is what attracted the bear it’s a story that you can find historically in the news.

It is a myth that menstruation will attract a black bear and the reality is there is little "blood", but instead a combination of fluids. In fact studies have shown black bears to ignore used tampons, or fluids created during menstruation. The reality is this particular bear was a problem bear that Game & Fish was aware of, that was habituated/ food conditioned and continued to return to the campground she was in because people were feeding it.

Really? At the risk of being called a modern day speci-est The only part that seemed to elicit an emotional breakdown was when she spoke of the loss of the bear. I'm deep in black bear country and despite the ignorance spewed in the comments, humans are not encroaching on bear territory where it would cause a growth in attacks. They have plenty of food and resources and the 600+ lbs boar that passed through my trail the other day is proof of that. A liberal amount of noise and commotion reinforces the notion that they are not welcome to come close to the house. My neighbor's practice this same approach to the bears as well. Attacks rates pretty much have been at a constant for centuries. Here in NH, we haven't had a fatal attack since the 1700s. You know what hasn't been around for centuries? Idiots who try to coddle wildlife and don't understand that a wild animal will only see you as either a threat or a resource no matter how you treat it. In the end, invite them into your space and your a convenient meal at the right opportunity....but sometimes it's your neighbor next door drinking his morning coffee.

I lived in a rural development in Nederland, Colorado. I had three black bears on my deck at different times (after my trash). The first, a small bear, tore off in a panic once I stuck my head out the sliding glass door and yelled, clearing the deck perimeter bench and handrail with a single bound. When I yelled at the next, middle-sized bear, it trotted over. hopped up on the bench, put its front paws on the handrail, and dropped to the ground (6 feet down). A huge, huge bear, around 11 pm, tried to ignore me when I turned on the outside light, stuck out my head and yelled. Finally it turned, walked slowly to the corner, turned it, walked to the top of the stairs, descended them, and walked away on the sidewalk. The three bears! I know it sounds like a story, but it's true!

All large animals like cattle have always been dangerous and predators have been eating people since the dawn of time. They aren't "becoming" more dangerous, it's the idiots who think they are in a Disney movie that are dangerous to the animals. That said dummies should keep trying to pet yogi bear or trying to get a selfie with a bison, eventually the idiots will get eliminated and the animals will be better for it.
