My favorite is when some kid brings some entry level instrument and says, "I don't like my guitar", and then I fix it or set it up and he says, "I love my guitar". That's the best.

It's funny about the "What guitars do I hate working on?" question. I know everyone is gonna have a different answer and reason for that. One of my other favorite channels is Dave's World of Fun Stuff, I think he is in Toronto, and he is as cranky as can be as he works on them, loves to rip apart (figuratively as he does so literally) Rickenbacker basses, but it is soooo entertaining, I love to watch him work and listen to his gripes, I get such good laughs from his repair videos. He knows his stuff too!

At he time(2007) that I bought my Strat replacement neck USA Custom Guitars was the only place I could get the specs I wanted. I ordered a soft V profile, 25" scale, 1.75" nut, 10"x14" radius and 5100 frets. They threw in bullet rounded fret ends as well. It's being put on my custom body and controls design now.

Thanks for responding to my question. I still wish Gibson would do a reissue of the explorer 90 and the v 90 because people are selling them at collector prices. I’ve seen Explorer 90s selling for over $4k. They were made for players. I just dislike seeing those kind of guitars sitting in cases and not really being played. Sorry if I’m kinda ranting.

I sold my 92 explorer a few years back because I didn't vibe with it. I want to revisit the guitar but back then the market value was $900-1000... Now? $1800+? That's insane. There's no way that they really worth that.

No I agree man... To a degree the collectors pov is understandable but it has gotten to where guitars that were built for players like the specials and juniors, guitars that were built to take a beating and do a job are being taken off the market and becoming closet queens to never see the light of day again till it's time to cash in and it is heart breaking. I had an invader a few years ago and I let my little cousin get it for a little bit of nothing cuz I knew he would use it to make great music... Ffw three years and apparently even those are beginning to get some notice amongst the hoarders and flippers.... I'm kinda glad I grew up putting together rigs from whatever I could get at a pawn shop and a few little cheap pedals and what not... I can get *my* sound out of about anything and it looks like that is going to be a skill to have.

I’m only a 76 year old subscriber Phil and watch your channel regularly. You are the voice of reason in a sea of mediocre channels who’s only purpose appears to be pushing and hyping products gratuitously to the point of actually being embarrassing. I loved your frankness on this episode. A breath of honesty, spoken very well, and without the slightest inclination to yield to industry pressure. In an era where politicians are selling their souls(some actually don’t have one) for five minutes of fame, you are a breath of fresh air. Keep doing what you are doing. Dignity is priceless.

I own a D'Angelico Deluxe line semi-hollow that was MIK and retails for around $1600. I've seen so many comments in forums saying they'd never guy a MIK guitar for that price. While I understand that to a point, my D'Angelico is, flat out, an amazing guitar with basically flawless construction. It's a fantastic guitar that feels like a premium instrument. My "country of origin" bias is not what it used to be.

Where are guitar is made really isn't a reflection of it's quality in today's age. There are top tier instruments made all over the world. There are guitars being made in China that are as good as anywhere else and at one time everything from China was considered junk. But where the guitar is made should be reflected, at least somewhat, in it's price. The cost of manufacturing changes based on where the guitar is made so a USA made guitar should be more expensive than an equivalent Korean made guitar. Sometimes brands who have their guitars made in Asia do pass the lower manufacturing costs on to the customer and some don't.

Tone Bastard Princeton is a good way to turn a $200 amp into a $900 amp. These things should be competing with Katanas, not tube amps.
@jray5363
@jray5363 2 жыл бұрын
I agree! The price is just too high for a digital amp. You might as well buy the tube version, because of resale value. That being said, Fender’s modeling tones are really nice, and if they were cheaper, I wouldn’t have any use for a tube amp. Maybe the price will drop down the road, but Fender is just cashing in while they’re fresh and new. And like Phil said, that Bassbreaker is gonna be the biggest seller, so it’ll be a while before the price drops.

Right now- I'm stalking a Jazz Master that only I know about- well, me and a handful of ppl who don't play and don't care. When I was a kid this kid from school named Chris I barely knew asked me to come stay overnight with him- and I went. And it was torture- the most boring household ever created- there was one thing of interest- an old Jazz Master in the attic- but they had no amp. So, we plugged it into a stereo system somehow- his dad did it for us- and played it. But I was like 10 years old, it had no distortion played through the stereo- I wasn't interested. Well- I saw the kid a few days ago- I'm 50 now and so is he- but he has the guitar and according to him it still plays fine and hasn't a mark on it. He asked me to come over and tune it up for him- he doesn't play, I'm going to stick a feather up his ass and steal it- we'll both be tickled to death. LOL- Nah, I'm going to take a set of strings over, my tube amp- and a pocket full of money- and hope I can talk him out of it. I kind of doubt he'll sell it really- it was his dad's so... must be some reason he kept it all these years, but it's literally been sitting in a case- gets cleaned 2-3 times a year he said but- that's it. I wonder if he still got that old tube driven stereo and phonograph- i want that thing as much or more than the guitar. It's an old, old stereo man- has the short-wave dial on it where you can listen to ships out at sea and Hamm radios and stuff like that. Had a wooden cabinet built around it- it was a Victrola if I remember right- that thing has to be worth a small fortune now- if it still exists.

I cannot say what is the source for this, but about 40 years ago, I read an interview with Scott Gorham, in which he said that most Les Pauls were overhyped and not good, but a few were great, and if you find a great one, grab it and keep it. This interview might have already been fairly old at the time when I read it.

The Jackson USA controversy reminds me of the HM Strat reissue: "a $1,200 guitar with a Floyd Rose special? No deal." Well all depends on the perceived value of the guitar / brand. If the same Jackson Soloist was $2000, would you buy it? No? At 1800 would you buy it? I got a HM Strat at $850 and just swapped the bridge to a Gotoh GE1996T. Was it worth it at this price? I think yes: a MIJ guitar with an excellent bridge for around a grant looks like a good deal. So the question is: at what price would this be a good value for the money (including a bridge swap if that's something important to you)?

I absolutely get what Phil’s saying as far as where a product is assembled. Very few products now days that most of the smaller subassemblies and piece parts aren’t made in China or other countries, they obviously have different levels of quality and quality control in the same Chinese factories most potentiometers are probably built in the same plant. The Chinese manufacturers are contracted manufacturers you don’t see a lot of that in the US at least civilian contract manufacturers. So a customer can specify the materials and tolerated allowances and the Chinese plant can make it just as good materials, design, and quality wise as any other country. Small electronics and electric components are made in China its just the way it is. China will take anyone’s money so Bobby Joe can order a batch of 500 pots and have a brand stamped on them and probably USA and he can also specify he wants them to be as cheap as possible and the Chinese plant will gladly sell him garbage, their name isn’t married to any Tom Dick and Harry that wants to buy cheap and sell high and could care less if the component works. The same Chinese plant can also make 50 dollar dimarzio or Duncan pots or CTS and Bourns . It’s not fair to blame or assume poor quality just because something is made in China or wherever. I believe in supporting American Labor whenever possible Union or non union I’d rather buy a Hyundai, Kia , Honda , Nissan, Toyota because they are actually assembled in America with American labor, they are full of the same Chinese components as the big three, but the big three don’t build vehicles in America anymore. I work for a very prominent appliance company a household name you probably can’t find a room in your house that doesn’t have something with the logo on it. This American company was bought by Chinese investors or company several years ago but they still build appliances in America. I guess what I’m saying is I really don’t care where the board of directors live and play golf at , I want to know who’s building their products and if it’s Americans I would much rather support my fellow American laborers whenever possible. Now on those Jackson guitars I guess considering an American production Jackson running around 1200 back in the 90s is about right, however those production guitars had binding and came with a top of the line hard shell case . The Japanese Dinky being 2500 is ludicrous. Charvels and EVH seems to be fairly priced and logical across the line ups. Fender and Jackson prices make absolutely no sense to me, top of the line Squier is equal to or close enough to a standard Mexican a Japanese fender is close enough to a more expensive Mexican fender so I think the value is in the Squier and Japanese Fenders. Whew that was a book and a long way of getting back around to American Jackson with a Floyd 1000 or whatever, why not put a 130 dollar gotoh 1996T that is definitely superior to the lower priced FR and in my opinion better than the original.

I get that people get all "in their feelings" about where guitars are made, you could argue it's just as crazy to pay 2599 for the American Luxe strat with the real Floyd Rose that is a bolt-on. I'm sure they will sell quite a few, but as someone who lived through what Jackson was, you just expect to see neck binding and a better Floyd on a Jackson over 2k. Is some of that living in the past? Sure, but you can't talk about brands having value and ignore the history of the brand. Like every brand, Fender had to made choices to hit the price point in optimize for the sales numbers / profit margin they desired. I could care less where the Floyd is made, but one only has to feel the fine tuners (and in the case of the FR1000 how the collar that holds the bar on feels when you screw it on) and you can immediately tell the difference between them and a german made FR. I think the made in American Jacksons are a follow up to the success of the MIM Charvel So-Cal. If Fender had any idea what the demand would be for those, they absolutely would have rolled out a made-in-America version first.

Hey guys- how do you avoid turning your tube amps off and on too much? I'm a busy person- I get little 1 hr to 30 minutes spots during the day where I can play, then I'm back at it for a while- and I come back- repeat, all day and night. I've always used solid state and never thought about turning it off and on over and over but- from what I understand this isn't good for tube amps. Then again- I hear so much weird stuff about tube amps- I have no idea what's real and what's made up. I was using the standby function when I left it but- then ppl told me that's not what it's for and that can damage my amp so don't do that. So what's the deal- do I just cut the volume on my guitar and leave it- do I turn it off, do I put it in standby? Or should I do a tribal juju dance around it a few times and bury my underwear in the backyard for 3 days- LOL- cause this is about the gist of some of the ridiculous stuff I've heard since buying a tube amp. Ppl are nuts man, you gotta love it.

There's really no meaningful difference between a 1000 series and an OFR. I have both. Hardened steel alloy used on both. The OFR might take slightly longer to wear out, but the difference really is meaningless. The Chinese Special and other licensed Floyds is where you will see a noticeable drop in quality of the materials used.

I stopped buying vintage guitars from the 60s in the late 70s. The prices got crazy so much that only the wealthy can afford them. I would be too worried that a real vintage guitar would get damaged or stolen at a gig and could never be replaced. I'll stick with a mid priced guitar like a Sterling by Music Man Albert Lee. It sounds great, the neck profile and radius of the fret board are comfortable and easy to play. The pickups work well and it has a 5 position control switch. The length of the guitar is shorter than other guitars, but the scale length the standard Fender one. Best of all it weighs under 7 pounds.

There are a lot of crappy vintage guitars out there. In the Seventies I would go through ten new Gibsons and find three really good ones. Same with Fenders. Martins had more in ten as did Rickenbacker. Remember these are factory assembly line instruments. Vintage ones were more like six out of ten were quality. I had three Norlin era Les Pauls that were as toneful and playable as any Fifties Les Paul. Had friends with vintage stuff compare them. Good is good and bad is bad. I have Squire Bullet Strat that rings great. Pickups are fine! Played another like it that was firewood. Just because a guitar is vintage does not mean it’s good.

Vintage guitars are rare, because some rich guys tend to buy them up and keep them in a vault, something us mortals and real musicians could never do. I've also noticed, especially on youtube, that guitarists seem to think, only with a vintage guitar they become a respected guitarist. They're all hunting for vintage guitars, as if new guitars are somehow worse. Even some young guitar prodigies get outfitted with vintage guitars nowadays, because that's apparently what you need to count as a real guitarist.

Gibson seems like the most obvious country-of-origin brand. For a long time, people have said Gibson would sell tons more guitars if they dropped Epiphone and had one Gibson brand, regardless of country of manufacture. So, was their stubbornness a virtue in this environment?
@gregoryhall3156
@gregoryhall3156 2 жыл бұрын
Gibson will never do this-they want to promote the American made Gibson as the epitome of the best of electric guitars-regardless of how good or not their QA/CQI is-Epiphone will remain their more affordable, foreign made “tribute” brand-Gibson are the OGS (Original Guitar Snobs.) Fender on the other hand started out as a company operating under principle of making a high quality instrument as best possible price and with notion that it should be easy to maintain/repair. Hence the interchangeable bolt on neck, basic body shapes that could be easily reproduced en masse without an army of craftsman wood carvers, etc (a working man’s/working musician’s guitar). We have Leo Fender to thank for these principles. After Leo sold Fender to CBS and with subsequent change of ownership and reorganjzation of company in 1980s-new management realized that given rising manufacturing costs domestically in US it was to their advantage to open a factory in Mexico to make more affordable versions of their traditional guitar models for ordinary working musicians and hobby players. Squier line followed and was even more budget conscious with aim at beginner/student guitarists. With advent of CMC machines that could carve bodies and necks very well with tight tolerances and advance in ability to wind and produce pickups of highly reproducible quality-the differences between the most expensive American made Fenders, the MIM Fenders and the Asian made Squier line began to shrink considerably. Now the main difference lies iine quality of final hand finishing process on necks (fretwork and fret finishing, quality of hardware and electronics and expense of the pickups. Fender USA has thus moved into more special features on the California made instruments such as contoured heel, better/more expensive pickups/best quality hardware, higher quality final neck finishing and offer of special finishes (real nitro laquer), and in case of Custom Shop some exotic woods for bodies and necks, unique variations on traditional Fender designs in truly limited quantities, and very accurate detailed reproduction of original vintage Fender guitars and of course some complete with very realistic aging and relic finishing. Fender’s business model and adaptations have served them well-the fact that they are largest electric guitar maker in the world is testimony enough to that. Meanwhile Gibson has gone thru multiple reorganizations and changes in ownership after bankruptcy all the while maintaining Epiphone as a distinctly different more affordable line. So a basic Gibson studio Les Paul or Les Paul Junior, which in 1950s would have been considered their student/beginner line, is still made by Gibson but now sells for more than any Squier or MIM Fender and as much as many of the American made Fenders-while at same time Epiphone line also includes Les Paul Juniors and very basic bolt on neck Les Paul versions that cost $150-250 as their absolute lowest priced models. This reflects their brand snobbery to some extent IMO-and has contributed to their financial struggles (along with their lack of appropriate level of quality control to match the asking prices of their Gibson guitars. Given how much better many affordable, budget friendly guitars have achieved (including Epiphone)-is it any small wonder why they have struggled financially.

@@gregoryhall3156 Fender has gone through multiple changes in ownership and reorganization as well and they're really not doing too hot right now. And many of their troubles have stemmed from poor management decisions and a surplus of budget guitars. Also Gibson as a company had financial difficulties due to poor investments from their former management, nothing at all to do with their guitars. The actual Gibson and Epiphone guitars have remained profitable. I don't fault Gibson at all for refusing to stick their name on any guitar regardless of who makes it. Gibson makes Gibson. Fenders have been made by many different companies, I don't consider that a positive. I like guitars from both brands but the whole Fender does ever thing right and Gibson does everything wrong is seldomly accurate.

How often do you have to change tubes? Just got my first tube amp, bought it used- no idea how old the tubes are. It sounds great- no issues or anything but- I'm thinking- as addicted to playing as I am and considering I would have to order them online and wait for them to arrive- hope they get here in one piece- I should probably buy a set now and put them up. But I hear they're not easily found and very expensive right now so- I don't want to waste the money if I don't really need to. It's a Blackstar Club 40- I need a pair each of EL34s and ECC83s. And I'd like to keep it stock because I don't know how to bias it properly if I change the tubes- it's not self-biasing. The Behringer I looked at was and I thought very much about just going with it but- you're still stuck with a socket config so you can't just use anything. But you can use any tube that will fit, and the damn thing will bias itself- that's a really cool feature.
@dr_streudel
@dr_streudel 2 жыл бұрын
@@stoneysdead689 if the amp works and sounds good, you don’t need tubes yet. If you start hearing rattle when you play or if your amp breaks up way too fast, you might need a tube change but if it’s working to spec I wouldn’t worry about it. I bought a used fender champ from 1972 a few years ago that still had functional original tubes in it, they’re a lot more durable than folks will make them out to be. I also had a Blackstar Club 40 I bought in the late 2000s and sold a year or two ago, original tubes, never had to change them.
