The tiger is associated with Bajiquan, both Akira and Ryo's fighting style. Also the main protagonist in Lost Judgment has some Bajiquan moves in his "Tiger style".

Could RGG do Shenmue ? In their sleep they could do Shenmue! We just gotta wine and dine Suzuki so he softens up to loosening his grip on the IP. Suzuki apparently has a dragon and Phoenix guarding the Shenmue IP in his basement

It comes down to SEGA more than YSNET. I expect if SEGA said to Yu Suzuki they wanted to do it and RGG to do it he'd happily be there to help/support.

@ShenmueDojoVOD ya but doesn't yu hold the rights ? Sega would unleash RGG if yu was more open to a shift in creative direction. Cuz only way Sega would greenlight would be perhaps if they could do Shenmue more on Segas terms , and that's where it comes back to Suzuki, he would want to stay in the driver's seat . Where as Sega would appoint the head of RGG to guide the direction of Shenmue going forward, with concessions made to Suzuki perhaps as a very close/boots on the ground consultant. That's still speculative ,how it would go down. But I can't help think that's what it will come down to since yu suzuki would demand he have complete control of the project. Which realisticly speaking, Sega would not go for, they would want their brightest and best all star team to take control, in the form of their new "starting lineup" of devs with a recent track record of hit making , i.e , Yakuza team

@@majicweather4890 SEGA still own the IP but pretty much let Yu Suzuki do what he likes with it, which is very rare. Though I imagine if SEGA wanted to make 4 the could do it without Yu Suzuki though I expect they wouldn't. They'd rather have him on board. I don't think Yu Suzuki (speaking for him now and just my view) would be against RGG doing the game but I expect he would want some oversight very much like the Anime where that team did their own thing but consulted Yu Suzuki. As an aside - anything Shenmue 3 related has to go via YSNET instead of SEGA as YSNET own the rights to that particular installment.

@ShenmueDojoVOD I see, that's strange, I was always told yu suzuki owned the rights to shenmue. I didn't know Sega could just go and make a new Shenmue game on their own if they wanted to. So based on what you've said, it does ultimately goes back to Sega wanting to or not, since Yu Suzuki actually has no legal authority over the IP

@majicweather4890 So Yu Suzuki got the licence for Shenmue to make Shenmue 3. So overall the IP remains with SEGA though I'm fairly sure they'd allow Yu Suzuki to make Shenmue 4. Especially if they don't have their own plans for the series. But yes ultimately SEGA could make a new Shenmue game if they wanted to.

To be precise Ryo has always been learning Chinese martial arts. The style he was taught by Iwao is basically Baji Quan. Later in Hong Kong he got closer to the source.

However, there is a big difference between referencing the historical origins and provenance of domestic styles and actually using a style from another country in its current form. Baji Quan still exists in China today and, at least to my knowledge, has not influenced any Karate style as directly as Hung Gar/Tiger or Crane Fist, for example. It was a very conscious decision to choose a style that was unusual for Japan.

I don't know if we'll ever get Shenmue 4, but I'm expecting the single player story mode of the next Virtua Fighter to play very similar to Shenmue or Yakuza. Hopefully Ryo will appear as a guest character.

ORA ORA ORA!! you can tell they're reusing things from their games because, that's RGG classic style... it just that Akira fighting style in this demo, is far from his bajiquan... cause I remember the letdown I felt when in tekken they complete changed jin moves...

They had to rush this demo for the CES showcase and, according to the dev, they didn't have a Bajiquan master ready to do some mocap. They used one for the other video shown at TGA, which was actually made after this one.

@@ShenmueDojoVOD all the pointless dialogue with NPCs, fetch quests and “raise x amount of money via tedious job or gambling for ____” to progress the story. Not sure if you’ve ever played Yakuza Kiwami 2 or Yakuza 0 but I would love Shenmue with that flow of gameplay, story and side quests. In yakuza it’s entirely optional to partake in games, gambling or side quests but they’re very fun.

Changing It would make the game just your generic open world game that's focuses on dialogues but with the Slice of life Japan setting. As a fan of fighting games i think the grinding is super Fun and that's what separate shenmue from all the other open world games.

UE5 is an amazing engine. Some great games have already been made using it (and they sold A TON), and more are coming. It's the industry standard at this point, especially if you are aiming for visuals with that quality.

Shenmue by RGG? I don't really see it. They are literally already overwhelmed with work. Multiple Yakuza games + New IP + Virtua Fighter with AM2 and Shenmue? It's not right to throw all work at them. CS1 aka RGG it's a biggest Sega division but even they can't handle it. For Shenmue needs a separate and not small division.

Honestly it would be really good to shenmue characters in a virtua fighter game 🎮 ryo, Ren, Gui zhang and lan di, and that red villainess from shenmue 3 because they look like expert martial artist, But honestly i dont think shenmue will ever rise back from the dead nor will we ever see the story end, Yu Suzuki waited way too long to revive it and the 3rd one flopped and failed, like why wait a decade in a half to bring a series back, and SEGA unfortunately has a reputation for dropping franchises if they dont sell well, If u aren't Yakuza or Sonic, u can forget about promotion; But i hooe virtua fighter 6 brings something new to the table and give the characters a story and a reason why they are fighting, Because virtua never had a decent story to begin with and only a select few characters are interesting and intriguing!

@treyday326 Suzuki didn't wait out of choice. It was because he couldn't secure the licence initially and then needed kickstarter to get 3 made. SEGA made a bad decision putting Shenmue 2 on Xbox only at the time when they should have gone multi-platfirm or at least PS2 as well. We know they had a version of Shenmue working on that hardware now. Also Shenmue 3 did financially fine as per the publisher from their earnings call back in Feb 2020. It was also the primary revenue driver at the time and described as a 'core niche product'. That says is made some money but likely missed whatever lofty targets they had for it.
