Sweden isn’t a socialist country. It is a market economy with a welfare state.
@abcxyz18814 жыл бұрын
What is welfare state is actually a socialist society. They adapted it from Soviet Union after the world war to prevent the spread of communism to Western Europe. Education, health care and old age care is free. Income tax is in the range of 50%. What else make it less socialist
@abhinavsingh1014 жыл бұрын
Socialism means abolition of private property. That can be de jure, like in Russia, or de facto like in India (with excessive regulations regarding what can be done with capital.) Sweden has competitive markets and free trade and sound finance, unlike protectionist countries. You should check out economic freedom of the world rankings; it features in the top 10-15 countries.
@markp66214 жыл бұрын
About 10 years ago Sweden privatised much of its healthcare, its schools and aged care. Unfortunately the price of healthcare went up to almost the highest in Europe, and the performance went down to being the second worst in Western Europe (as measured by hospital beds per 1000)... only the UK is worse. Thousands of doctors and nurses in Stockholm alone were sacked going into this crisis. Some women were being flown into Finland just to give birth. When Finland closed their border with Sweden many health workers who lived in Finnish Lapland could no longer commute across the border to Swedish Lapland for work. Swedens education was one of the best in the world, but then went down to #20 of 28 in the OECD. It has since recovered to be a little better than average (ie. inside the top 10), but its teachers now have some of the lowest morale in Western Europe. After privatisation its aged care had many scandals including eg. not changing adult daipers to save money. This probably means they didn't want to spend money on PPE either, which may explain why they became epicentres.

I live in Sweden. It is too early to say whether Sweden failed or succeeded in handling Covid-19. - As Swedish PM put it, this is a marathon; not a sprint. - One needs to wait at least one year to evaluate its success. At the end, lockdown is not going to make any difference. - The cases and deaths in countries that locked down are going to increase when they open up again. - The Swedish strategy was based on Science. Anders Tegnell never said that the strategy was wrong. He said the nursing homes (old age homes) failed to protect elderly. It has nothing to do with the strategy. The majority of the deaths are in age group 80 and above. And in nursing homes. Lock down was not going to change death rates there. - Majority of the staff working at nursing homes are refugees, who don’t speak Swedish and are not aware of hygiene routines. This was again a structural problem and not related to strategy. - The logic behind lockdown is to avoid overwhelming the health system. (to flatten the curve). In Sweden, even without lockdown they could flatten the curve. - Another part of strategy was not to close down the schools. That really worked. - Lockdown is not a long term strategy. No country can remain in shutdown until the vaccine is developed and produced for the entire population. - The situation here is not a mess. The death rates are stabilizing. Even Nobel laureates like a Prof. Michael Levitt applauded Swedish strategy. Status : kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqaTY4qam7CJnqM

As rate of infection increases, the death rate will also increase. Prof. Johan Giesecke : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJexY32Nnst_ebs It is assumed that India will reach its peak only in July. So, it is too early to compare. Again Sweden failed in protecting the elderly in nursing homes (old age homes). That is a failure. 50% of deaths are in old age homes. But it has nothing to do with the strategy. Nothing would have changed even if the country was in total shutdown.

Hello, from Sweden! In addition to the points you mentioned, Sweden also drastically reduced her testing scopes initially. And besides not quarantining the elderly homes strictly, the lack of proactive testing meant that the caregivers at elderly care homes weren't tested for symptoms of the virus. And speaking of symptoms, even if you showed certain symptoms, you couldn't really visit any hospital initially without having a pre-diagnosis done over the phone via a national "emergency helpline" number. If you show milder symptoms, you are asked to quarantine yourself (although they call regularly and sorta check up on you) in a measure to not overburden the system. And surprisingly enough, having a high literacy rate does not guarantee literate and responsible behaviour from individuals; if anything, the "soft lockdown" could only be described as voluntary. Although the healthcare system is far from being burdened, Sweden's approach to containing the disease, I concur, is a disaster. Sigh.

"pyaz bhi khaye Joote bhi khaye" the story :- Long back in the 1950s, in our school days, we were taught a story where a man was caught for stealing a few pieces of onions. The magistrate devised a strange punishment for him wherein the man was given the option to choose one punishment out of the three. He was asked either to pay Rupees 100 as fine or to get 100 lashes on his naked back or to eat 100 onions at a stretch without stopping to take water or anything. Being poor, he didn’t have any money to pay the fine. In those days, Rupees 100 was quite a huge amount of money and 100 lashes would be too painful a punishment. So he decided to eat 100 onions, which to him seemed the most easy punishment. But hardly had he eaten a few onions when his eyes got swollen with tears and his mouth burnt with the pungent onion juice. He cried that he may be lashed with a whip. But even that could not be taken as after about just 10 lashes he asked the executioner to stop and that he would somehow manage Rupees 100 to pay the fine.

No wrong assessment of Swedish policy, we need to wait and see the long-term impact on all accounts... Lives lost Vs economic impact etc etc
@rkh73604 жыл бұрын
Much needed. Epidemiologists are just bragging too much now. Rahul bajan claiming draconian lockdown while missing the point that India needed it to prepare its infrastructure n cuz of that, now we are better placed. I can only tell from personal experience. The hospital where I work has increased its ventilators by thousands. We are better equipped. So now we can take the risk of opening up. With India's population, the rise in numbers of positive cases will always be eyeball grabbing. But as long as the rate of patients on ventilator n death rates are low, we're good. Plus with the experts saying Corona is here to stay for a couple of years, mann k chalo that we will be affected.

We can have the talk after everything is over. The mathematical models are not virus-specific, and the epidemiologists do know what they are talking about. Remember, India's numbers are still rising exponentially.
@ajeebdastaaan3964 жыл бұрын
Yeah SG has shown disdain for the millions of cases predicted by epidemiologists since March which didn't took social distancing and lockdowns into account and would have resulted in achieving herd immunity and high number of fatalities.But no one can't really give verdicts on Covid-19 containment strategies that has worked or not worked for respective country?Countries will do course corrections in their response to the cases and fatalities. It's like declaring a side being winner/loser based on the evidence of the result of first day's play of a 5 day test match!!

How does money and medical system help with an incurable highly infectious virus?
@angryhusky24674 жыл бұрын
It helps in reducing the pain and suffering before death.
@syt54094 жыл бұрын
@Chirag Patel As far as I know, the mortality rate depends upon total confirmed cases and total confirmed deaths. It is fluctuating in countries depending upon demography, number of tests conducted & other factors. Please don't extrapolate data and come up with quick unfounded conclusions.
@syt54094 жыл бұрын
@Chirag Patel sure, right after you turn sober. Sweden has the ideal conditions. The best ideal conditions one can ever have in the current scenario. And this video proves that such ideal conditions cannot keep the mortality rate at 1 percent. :)
@syt54094 жыл бұрын
@Chirag Patel Sir, you still quote percentages which are quite unproven. I may not fully comprehend the nature of this tricky virus, but so does many experienced virologists and epidemiologists. You, however, have seemed to have mastered the science of this virus in all ways possible. My simple point in my first comment was money and medical system can only protect one nation so much, against this deadly & incurable new virus.
@tg-bv8mc4 жыл бұрын
I don't stay with my family in India. When this all started, I used to have nightmares thinking about the condition back home. The concern was just not limited to my family but the whole country. I never supported current government but I am not shy to say that I thank Modi government for the complete lockdown. As per my understanding, that was the best option. Additionally, we just cannot rely on the government to do everything. We all need to step up and do every bit we can to overcome this situation. Extend help, doesn't matter how small or big. Look around n help.

I think some of the claims made in your video can be disputed. From Stockholm Sweden here, I can confirm that the peak death day was around mid April, since then the count has been going down. Infact this Sunday it was probably zero( though it could be a reporting delay as on Monday was 8). Also the fatality rate has been almost flat with a slight downward tilt. Also we have been living a very normal life with school's open but everyone working from home as much as possible.
@SnehaKaSafar4 жыл бұрын
@Chirag Patel Please look at the "Daily New Deaths in Sweden" graph on worldmeter site as you rightly pointed out. April 21st -> 185, May 14th -> 147, June 5th -> 77. Also May 31st was zero but we can ignore that as recording/backlog error. So you still feel that the death toll is rising ?

Thank you for the video to the team of The Print, for the past few days it has become a ritual of mine to watch an episode of Cut the Clutter first thing in the morning. I really appreciate the quality of the content on the website as well as the KZbin channel. However, I have to raise a point about today's video. Mr. Gupta said "Science is not absolute", I would beg to differ. Science is indeed absolute, it is the capability of the scientist that has landed Sweden in trouble. Politicians should only listen to scientists first (while tackling issues such as health etc.), but should refrain from going ahead with making policy decision basis views of a single scientist.
