Not to forget that the Phaeton underpinnings went into the Bentley Continental - a true GT if ever there was one.
@dzelpwr3 жыл бұрын
More accurately, both are actually a steel-bodied D3 A8 (the Audi was aluminum). The basic premise of its virtual steering axis front suspension design actually originates in the D2 A8 that came out in the mid '90s... And the B5 A4 and C5 A6 following shortly thereafter with variations on the same theme and every generation of B, C and D platform cars thereafter, plus the Q5 for good measure (and Porsche's Macan) and the B5/5.5 VW Passat... The first time I sat in a Continental GT, I had to chuckle to myself how much of a parts bin VAG product it felt like on the inside. Sure, the seats and dashboard were pretty fancy and bespoke to Bentley, but the steering wheel, column, most of the interior switches all basically parts bin VAG with some mild dressing put on them. Not to mention, basically the entire electrical system, as evidenced by my Ross-Tech VCDS scan tool being able to talk to every module in the car as though it were just another VW/Audi product. To those of us who have been underneath a lot of these cars and looked at/worked on the suspensions, the Conti GT and Phaeton are just another virtual steering axis Audi design. One of many the VAG empire has produced since the '90s. They're actually quite poor for steering feedback, but they are accurate. And the trick geometry means that high powered AWD cars don't exhibit any torquesteer when hard on the power. So, fair trade off. It does make for a very confident-feeling high powered AWD car at speed, for sure. But the lack of feedback from the steering is far from sporty in its feel, but they are all capable handling cars.
@Novavon73 жыл бұрын

Usually these cars are leased by companies where it doesn't really matter if they pay 1000 or 2000 a month and it's part of the salary of the management basically. After 3 years for half price they can be bought be rather normal people and after ten years when maintenance gets expensive because stuff starts breaking they are on the cheap market.

The problem with a lot of the cheaper luxury cars, is balling on a budget is a real thing now. You can get a fairly nice Accord, Avalon or K900/k8 and honestly be driving in style. Very true statement(s) indeed……Prices of luxury cars drop faster than a hefty garbage bag full of shit thrown off a cropduster…in flight….. Therefore in about 7 to 8 years the two new cars that were shown the Audi and the BMW are going to be around $20-$25,000…..(inflation not estimated ) I’ve made this conclusion years ago If I really like a car I’ll wait for 56 years and pick it up for a quarter of the price just like right now I have a Acura RL that was worth 50 racks 10 years ago…. I paid $8500 for last year Has less than 100k miles. Very well taken care of drives now as it did brand new sure took a little time to find it but as always good things take time and this applies to every car A-Z……(supercars, and one offs NOT to be applied)

Why didn't you get a W12 Volkswagen? I thought that was the more popular engine
@sambulleit61913 жыл бұрын
He talks about it in his review of the Phaeton. He justifies the smaller engine because the Phaeton is already a bonkers complex VW built on a Bentley platform, so why run the risk of even higher repair bills by adding an obscure german V12 into the mix? I had the same thought initially, but I can follow that logic lol

This is the least exciting segment of the automotive world for me - but I understand why some people buy these cars. Strikes me as though if you want luxury, you’d not buy the older ones (luxury and problems don’t mix well to me)….but of the two, I’d far prefer the phaeton. The BMWs styling these days is just horrific. I’ve been a long time bmw buyer and I fear I may have bought my last one. Having my boxster in the shop, I was given a base macan and I was surprised how much I liked it. My version of a luxury car would likely be a panamera a macan or cayenne (depending upon space needs) or the Audi versions of the Porsches. Something that aims to move a tick toward the performance/pedigree/exotic swerve of the quattroporte without taking unacceptable breakdown risks, makes more sense to me

Twice the likelihood that something can break or a convenient backup of not getting stranded in the off chance that something does go wrong.

As mentioned in the video description, this was shot for TV while we had these old sedans. We’re catching up by posting past TV episodes to KZbin and this one just landed. By the end of the year things will be pretty close between TV releases and here on KZbin. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks for watching!
