Always a very detail review to help the real buyers. I actually bought a VW GTE and I have to say that if you do less than 40Km, you dont need petrol. And when you need to do more distance you have the petrol engine. I already did 1400Km with an average consumption of 3,2L/100Km (more than 70% in city). If you do more than 100Km per day in highways, choose the diesel. The car has a very sporty feeling and a lot of torque and power. You can have two cars in one!

this design will age very well. Volkswagen has been on the roll in terms of styling. I know others find them boring and dull etc etc. but I prefer timeless styling then something with swooping lines that will look dated afta a few years

Regarding to the question about Active Info Display system, I have had an opportunity to test B8 for couple of days with this system and it's a huge step forward in terms of display quality in segment D and indeed it is worth every extra euro for upgrade. The amount of information and adjustability of the screen on daily basis is just incredible. I think it's even better on this one than on Audi TT for example because of color sheme and extra informations on gauges. Exterior might be a matter of taste but interior in B8 is unquestionable winner in this particular segment.

Enjoyed the Update ! I really love the look of the New Passat GTE . I'm a big fan of EV's in General. My daily commute is 98.17 KM or 61 miles US . There is a Federal Tax Credit in the US right now of $ 7500 depending on battery size and some State tax credits depending on location. I hope we see this exact vehicle in the US soon.The upgraded MMI and interior a welcome advantage. Thanks Joe

Thomas, your reviews just get better and better. As a former Passat owner, this GTE really appeals to me. I would buy the Variant, simply because it makes more sense than the sedan. I like the digital instrument display option. Someone lower down in the comments mentioned that the digital displays would be annoying at night as they would be too bright, but that person, I guess, doesn't realize the intensity of the display can be dimmed. I too prefer fabric upholstery to full leather. Alcantara is simply the best when available as an option, but the upholstery in this GTE looked very nice as well. It's a pity VW never bring the Estate versions to South Africa. Everyone here seems to be SUV mad and estates just don't sell in sufficient numbers. The Passat doesn't sell well here either, as VW don't make any effort to market it. It does however mean you can pick up used ones at a good price.

I chose this car as a company car because it is high quality in construction, stylish without being vulgar, and has a good electric range and, equally important, good economy when the batteries are depleted. Living in London, I avoid the congestion charge and also the new ULEV costs. So in all, a wise choice for me.

Please note that when you use the quote "I must say", it means that the statement you just made is a negative one, or critisism. Meaning "i am sorry but I have to critisize this". You often use this frase inappropriately. Just to help eliminate misunderstandings in the future :-)

Thomas, would you know if VW is planning to upgrade the batteries in the GTE models to the new ones, as they are about to put into the e-Golf? This would increase the GTE range to 60-65 km, I presume.

Well, great review as always. Volkswagen and Audi are going to reach the perfection as a car makers. I really like them cars, but the pricing... I just bought my first car, I was looking for a new one and I choosed a Suzuki Swift. Of course before I bought it I had visited Volkswagen dealership to have a look at the Polo, but Polo with the same spec would cost around 18k£, when for Suzuki I paid only 11k£. I know that that's the price of the quality, but is Suzuki really worse? I don't like poor equipment at Volkswagen cars as a standard that's why they can't competitive for me. Coming back to Passat, I don't think that overall design of the car is eye catching. I don't fancy the front line. Especially at lower trims levels it look quiet poor. I like the white colour and I would definitely pick that one! Overall perfect car, perfect review, you can't even imagine how I'm waiting for your videos😜 Keep it going Autogefühl 👍

An der Abdeckung vorne, ist ein kleiner Haken. Man muss den Deckel der Elektrodose nicht einfach "runterfallen" lassen, sondern kann sie, wie beim Dankdeckel auch, dort einhaken.

Up to now, the BMW i3 was my number one electric car that doesn't carry the Tesla name. Now this might be my No1 non-Tesla electric car.

Well... the gearbox "B" mode actually has a more similar behaviour as a petrol engine, because ad that braking engine feeling. Even in sport driving helps to brake faster and is more racing feeling.

I was surprised that this car is reaching the 44k price range. VW should consider adding more premium details to make buyers forget about luxury brands. Engine wise, it is a great car!

This cars where super cheap in the Netherlands for 2 years. It’s complicated to explained, but let’s say for business people it was as cheap each month as driving a Volkswagen up. For my as a private buyer it is now cool, since I can buy one second handed for just 17,5k from the first owner with full options.

I'm not sure about these full digital gauges in the new cars these days! We are staring at too many screens every day already so also in the car now? No thanks. And at night, it must be really annoying and tiresome to have these bright screens as gauges... Great review btw Thomas! Greetings from Canada

i know. disappointing how many manufacturers are going to them. i can see the versatility but when driving, i would like to get away from technology. instrument cluster is like a fine watch. give me a nice instrument cluster thats artful looking. not no computer desktop screen.

i'm with you on that - a car is essentially a very mechanical thing and looking at the rev counter is something that should never be taken from it, i'm fine with the ones that implement some 3d element on top like bmw does but a completely flat surface behind the steering wheel just looks wrong.

Thank you for detailed presentation of the new passat. I am a passat owner and was looking forward to the new passat or Arteon. Unfortunately, Arteon price has pushed me out of the category of potential buyer so i would have to buy another passat, however i noticed "No AWD" option is being offered. Very sad for me. I'm afraid that i will have find another mid size sedan with AWD in the $32,000 - $36,000 range. Wish you all the best and keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next video. All the conversations about range surely apply also to ICE vehicles. If you have a heavy right foot and use an accelerator/brake style of driving the fuel consumption will go up greatly, except without regenerative braking. I still think hybrids are a cop-out and prefer to see BEV's with larger batteries without the added complexity of the ICE engine.

really good review Thomas ... Don't have any of the gtes yet here in the US. Stupidly (IMO) we don't even have the same B8 Passat ... though we do get the same MQB Golf/GTI (just made in Mexico). There is talk about VW going to the European version of the Passat in the next get Passat. Can't come too soon IMO - US customers that want a VW want to drive a German car - regardless of where it is made - they don't want an Americanized version of a German car. Stupid VW management decisions all around (Dieselgate etc). They don't do that with Audis and they sell great here, but for some reason they thought it would be different with the Passat? strange thinking is all I can say. I drive a 2016 GTI and love it, but have to say that I would be tempted to go with the GTE if it was available. I'm hearing that the next gen GTI may go 'mild hybrid' with a 48V system and electric turbo that will supply better regen and better low end torque and better mileage overall - but not really any pure electric range. That'll be interesting as well.

Think it has to do with the homologization of the Passat, they didnt want to do that for the US market with the B8 for costs reasons. I recently drove a B7 in the US, it was quite nice acutally. But the B8 is more evolved.

I agree with you Thomas, a hybrid that can do 50-80km per day would be a perfect fit for a huge number of people even in North America. In fact, 90% of my driving would be covered by this type of range. I quite like the i3 but in the end it's too small and kind of ugly. I know many of the manufacturers are working on Fuel cell cars, so I'm wondering how long it will take for us to see hybrid battery/Fuel cell cars in the future. This Passat is very upscale and very sharp design! VW figures it's too upscale for us North Americans and gives us dumb bums a duller than dull Passat. Oh, and no variant.... Surprise! ;)

why dont vw have a go at a Hydrogen powered car, now that for sure would be the best alternative to all this, I mean this really is impressive but there is certain uncertainty with batteries. great review, I like that consideration at 07:07 real forward thinking, considering these are bought by families with kids.

Thanks for a fantastic review Thomas. It helped med choose between the Golf GTE and the Passat GTE ... and I ordered the Passat GTE yesterday. Price in Denmark with my chosen specs and our wonderful taxes = 77.500 euros ... cough, cough!! Can hardly wait for the expected delivery in July :o)

Dear Autogefüh, first of all, excellent review!!! This is exactly what I was looking for....however I am still a little bit lost in terms of fuel consumption of this car. I understand that its really based on the driving method-habbits, but is it true, that having 1 full tank + 1x fully charged battery, you can make 990km? That would be an excellent result, but nowhere saw it confirmed. My daily trip is 60km to work (starting fully charged) but cannot charge it at work, so back, the battery would be on the same level as I stopped. Do you think I should chose a GTE or rather a 2.0 Diesel? Out from the 60 km, cca. 55 is on a normal road, with almost zero trafic, and 5 in city. I always drive in a way to save as much fuel as I can do. Right now having an 1.6 TDi Golf 6 and avg. consumption on this trip is 4.6l-100km Thanks very much for your feedback

+Robert Beringer It makes sense if you have the possibility to charge at home or at work or both. The petrol engines alone consumes the standard at least approx 7 litres / 100 km

Dear Thomas, hello again from Cyprus. I am a happy owner of a B6 passat highline and this B8 passat has really gotten my attention. What is your honest opinion in a couple of words for the new passat and how does it stand against the merc c class and the bmw 3 series? From your reviews and from what i am hearing the passat lacks nothing compared to those two. Thank you Theo

Theocy1986 Definitely. Just the Skoda Superb can beat the Passat in price/performance ratio. You really have to think about if it makes sense to buy one of the premium brands in this segment as this new Passat is really great

Thanks for another great review. I have seen a lot of new reviews on the VW Passat GTE and yours (Autogefühl) is the best! I have orderd the VW Passat GTE, as a family car. In Sweden, where I live, you get €4500 grant from the government if you get a car with less than 50 g CO2 per/km. Problem is that I need to wait until christmas to get it, the demand for this car is really high. Anyways earlier this year I ordered my second car, an Audi A3 E-tron, however i will get it in september. I have a question for you since you have driven both the VW GTE models and Audi A3 E-tron. Both the Passat and the Golf GTE have a so called "GTE button". What is the equivalent "Button" on the Audi A3 E-tron?

Good review! I am curious about how much you can charge the battery from driving only? If you don't have a charging station and just use it with petrol/hybrid, how much percentage can you load the battery by driving a long day trip for example lets say you started with empty battery and then drive for like 8 hours mostly highway? because when you arrive to your destination, it would be great to be able to drive in Electric mode for 5-10 kilometers at least. Is that possible you think?

+Fredrik von Werder lets say you start at the top of a big mountain .. then yo have a chance ;) But if you want to load at any costs, of course you can goto charge mode and let the petrol engine recharge your battery. Doesnt make sense energy wise, but you can have electric cruise for your last kilometres again

+Autogefühl haha top of a mountain :) i get the point, the energy recovery system is rather limited when cruising down the highway, and the landscape is rather flat. So no point buying a GTE plugin if you don't have a charging place at home then, better to go with a regular hybrid or maybe even the most economical choice is a small diesel engine...but the thing is in Sweden we have, for company cars, very low tax for cars below 50 Co2, and they now talk about a new Bonus malus system that will make big difference in tax regarding to co2, and double tax for diesels. So it is quite hard to figure out what is actually the best car to go for :-/

Thomas, The car you shown us (the passat sw at the rear) seems to have an option 3CX (extra-bag separator). what I misunderstand is why VW France has decided has decided not to sell this option for the GTE Model. As for all hybrid cars, we're have a restricted capacity for luggages, why is it not possible to load up to the ceiling? what's your opinion ?

Kobbetop Actually, it's also sold in China and a few other Asian nations. The is actually developed by the VW China mainly for the Asian market. They seem to think we want that in North America, but what does VW know about North America...

hi, i was left with a question after seeing this review which is: what is the total range of the car when driving on hybrid mode both for the benzine and diesel engines. after all that is the main reason for getting a car like that the total range. some say over 1250 km per benzine tank. but this is never quite formal until autogefuhl tests it.

I'm sorry this is not a sufficient replay. en estimate on the other hand will be. there are interviews with vw personal on other car review shows that dose give the estimate. I would take it to consideration considering the fact Thomas is often saying "autogeful is all about the detailes" otherwise thank u for answering.

Leather is the end product of the meat industry,so unless you don't eat meat,wear leather shoes or watchstraps etc etc it's silly to object to leather seats in vehicles.Also,it might be better to not to use personal terms as good or not good is your review.You're entitled to your opinions,but maybe not in car reviews.Just saying.

I have driven 3000km with this car so far and I still have 30% of the first tank (petrol) that the car came with. 50km gets me to my work where I charge it before going home.... Fantastic car!

Don't show me that beautifully German made and designed Euro Passat! I owned a 2008 one, but I won't own another one ever again. Why? Because the ones here are now made in the USA, are not the same and are inferior junk!. Not the same design and is made very cheaply. VW didn't even bother to make a wagon version here. VW of America and their strategy for world domination and profits above all else has become a nightmare for American enthusiasts of the brand. VW loyalist here like myself have become more and more alienated by the brand every year. How can I move to Germany? Do you have a job for me there? I want the good stuff! :)

Thanks so much for a perfect review. The Swedish government has extended the reduction in the taxable benefit of electric cars by 2020. This means that there will be a good idea to choose electric cars for those who can lease a car through their employer.

Awesome review and additionalninfo! I discovered this channel severalmmonths ago, because ot your Golf GTE review. I-m much interested in the eletrical and plug in hybrid cars, for company fleet purposes. And the passat GTE is an excelent development. Do you know if Audi is planning on introducing this GTE approach, maybe in the new A4? Thanks in advance. By the way, excelent travel videos (I just don't understand german). I very much enjoyed your visits to our portuguese Madeira Island.

Vitor Afterglow Ferreira Thanks! Really appreciated. Actually we also got some travel videos on ReiseWorld in english, for example the Europe Road Trip, look out for that e.g. Audi offers the A3 e-tron already (its kinda the Golf GTE) and yes they will also introduce the Plugin-Hybrid for the A4!

The interior of the 2016 Passat GTE is significantly smaller than the 2015 Passat. My 2015 Passat has an abundant legroom space in the back. Big disappointment in this respect. Maybe non-GTE model is bigger?

I bought one of these cars. what a total and utter disappointment, made much much worse than it ever needed to be by the absolutely dreadful VW customer service. £1,000 dynaudio upgrade was a total waste of money as the doors vibrate like hell and VW don't have a fix for it. Power blind didn't work, EV range is a joke, noises from interior, car-net doesn't work and today the car decided to give me less power than I was demanding during an overtake. Lucky to be alive, but here I am telling the story and telling you why you shouldn't buy one of these cars. Disaster

In Taiwan for the same price 44,000 Euros they only offer sedan highline or variant comfort line with 1.8TSI and almost no options to choose from. Even the highline just have the entry level LED lights. I wish we could have some more options to choose from.
