The best thing about the ACS1 is that you can run two different amps at the same time, each sent to different sides of the stereo output. Whilst I love and choose the Uafx pedals, you need to buy 2 and then have some kind of signal blender to achieve the same thing. Cost wise you're in it for about 2-3 times the price of the ACS1

Wotcha everyone! My Andertons order showed up today. Amongst other things, a Fender Blues Junior IV - the first real amp I've had since the late 90s. I don't care what people say about modelling (which is amazing and I've been using assorted digital stuff for 15 years now) there's just something more tactile about it. The hour I had to play today was the most inspiring I've had in years. Also - if you don't have one at home, buy a £15 Ordo amp stand and point the thing at your ears instead of your shins. It transforms your sound (louder in the room, friendlier to the neighbours).

It's metal in a pedal, a Vox in a box, another technical marvel from the good folks at Walrus Audio- they make some crazy good pedals. I had the Slo on my board for 2 years, I couldn't justify keeping it though because the only time I used it was whenever I got the chance to celebrate 4:20, at home, alone- flake out for a couple hours creating soundscapes for horror films no one will ever watch. So, I sold it and bought the UA Knuckles- super impressed with it. That said, I want some Walrus back on my board- the Mako series delay is amazing, one of the best on the market imo. I can't wait to hear the MII version, hopefully it's even better now. That said- the ambient reverb in their fundamental series is like a little piece of the Slo on your board- I might go that direction and get my 4:20 buddy back. I actually prefer it when they kind of dial in a good sound like that and let it stand, don't give me the option to mess it up or go so over the top with it that it kind of turns into goop- because it seems if you do, I will screw it up. The Slo was heaven when you got it just right, but it was a bit tough sometimes to get it just right- it was easy to go overboard with it and lose the musical qualities of it, it turns into weird abstract sounds. Edit: Que the "UA should have MIDI" complaints- here we go. Every time they show a UA pedal, or any other amp sim wit MIDI- this comes up. Let's be real though- if you polled guitarist all over the world, what percentage do you think use MIDI? Idk for sure, I doubt anyone does- but I'm betting it's less than 3%. Is it really that hard to see why UA might not bother with it? Especially considering the current price point of their amp sims- I don't think many ppl are willing to pay more than what they already cost- MIDI or not.

Bought both the D1 and R1 as they fitted some very specific requirements that I was after. 1. Ability to control various time based effects with loads of different parameters and options that I have now (workhorse pedals effectively). 2. They're small "boss sized" pedals so I don't need something as big as a timeline and a big sky. 3. They've got some super cool stuff that no one is really doing in terms of sounds. They're defo on higher end of gear you'd buy but in a smaller package. I think I will go down a midi controller route with them to give me more flashy controls (which I guess kind of contradicts my point in point 2 but I'd like to make the options to control what I want to live). Think they're pretty excellent and excited to see what I can do with them in time.

I have the Walrus ACS1 with the firmware update. It is great and has never left my pedal board. I run the deluxe reverb with a 2x12 cab setting and a slight breakup. Walrus is a good company, there is no doubt. Customer service is #1 in the industry. Design wise, I feel they are a tale of two companies: the first, more analog and simple with splashy graphics, and the second, more complex, less focus on graphic design and more digital and feature rich. I kinda like the first version better. I would rather have pedals do one thing really well with a few twists of the knob than 100 things with hidden features and secret modes. I also prefer analog to digital.
@stoneysdead68923 сағат бұрын

Maybe it’s me, but the whole appeal of these pedals (besides great sounds) was that there was no menu diving. Why wouldn’t you just get a multi fx at this point? And I’m still salty about walrus not making the new amps available to the mk 1 owners in a FW update. These pedals are good, but not very good value for money. Sincerely, disappointed walrus acs1 owner.

Ordered the D1 last year. First one showed up with broken footswitches. The replacement had super glitchy software. Wouldn’t save settings. Other times delay trail settings would sound like different ones (the vintage setting would sound like the digital bit crusher setting) or there would just be really weird artifacts in the delay trails. I really hope this new version is better but it left a really bad taste in my mouth for their level of quality.

One big thing that the ACS1 does (that the Strymon Irridium, Boss IR2, and others don't do) is stereo modelling with a different amp on each side. It would be good to see Pete demo that, maybe stereo ping pong delay or chorus, with a different amp on each side (please Pete!)

Walrus includes MIDI while UA still refuses to, despite both being at a similar price point. One of those companies actually asked during product development ‘Hmmm, what would our customers actually need…’. And that is why Walrus are steaming ahead with brilliant pedals while UA are a self-licking ice-cream.
@stoneysdead68923 сағат бұрын
UA is selling far more than Walrus bud- sorry to piss on your "lets all hate UA" parade, but it's the truth. The vast majority of users don't use MIDI, nor do most of musicians I know who play for a living. UA realized that and decided not to include it, pretty sound business decision actually- though it pisses off the MIDI crowd, they're just not a large enough demographic for UA to start catering to.
@cmadelaide5620 сағат бұрын
@ You seem to think that criticising a $400+ digital pedal released in 2024 for not having MIDI is a ‘let’s all hate UA’ thing, as opposed to it being a reasonable criticism of a poor decision made on their part years ago, and now a stubborn refusal to admit it was a bad call. Pissed off? Not remotely - I only dipped my toe into MIDI 2 years ago, but it meant that the first company ruled out was UA. They keep saying ‘we want to keep it simple’, which sounds fine until you open their App. (ps. The Boss metal zone sold a lot of pedals too, sales don’t mean squat…)
@twanto9 сағат бұрын
As a user of the mk1 delay, it is glitchy with MIDI (both v1 and v2) and the sweep of the mix knob is not good. The MIDI works, but will sometimes not show the tap tempo correctly (I double and triple checked all my settings). On the mix knob, the main problem is that if you want to dial in a subtle delay, you don't have much sweep with work with. It goes from barely audible to way too much very quickly. If you are are playing shoegaze, probably not a problem for you. If you want subtle delay, you might be frustrated. I wonder what they have changed or not with the mark 2 version.

Then get the older version. I personally thought the same when I got the M1 Mk2 that I should have just stayed with the mk1, but I have enough disposable income that I figured well.. I rather not go through the hassle of returning it and buying the mk1 again. The acs1 however, I decided to sel the Mk2 l since I got a stomp which sounds awesome also and has some amps I love plus bass amps. The acs1 especially I could have stayed with the mk1 because I only used the fender and marshall anyway, and that one can be gotten for as little as 150 while the new acs1 is about 400 used and on backorder.

It’s all subjective of course, but my experience has been that if you’re going to spend extra money on something, the amp/modeler is where it should be spent. The Boss pedals are awesome for the price, but both the sound quality and feel of the ACS1 is on another level. Especially the new higher gain amps on the ACS1, it’s just amazing. In addition to the amp EQ, there’s also global presence and resonance and lo/hi pass filters. It also has spring reverb, room reverb, and hall reverb choices. Again, it’s all subjective and maybe others like the lower cost ones as much more than the ACS1. But my personal experience has been that the ACS1 is 100% worth it.

While I do think these pedals sound pretty good, they’re just not on par with UA’s line of pedals. This is Walrus’s attempt to compete with UA but seeing it that they’re already on version 2 and they still don’t match up, UA easily improves their pedals with simple updates. I think for an extra little bit more money, you can get yourself the VERY best in sound and not the 2nd place runner-up.
@offkilterКүн бұрын
A *little* more money? The ACS1 MK2 is one pedal with six amps for $450, and you can run two at a time in stereo. The UA pedals are one amp per pedal, and are $400 *each.* It's not even close when it comes to value. And Walrus definitely improves their pedals with simple updates as well. They pushed out updates to the whole Mako MK1 line instead of saving them solely for the Mako MK2 drop, which they certainly did not have to. I'm not even a big Walrus guy but imo they sound great. And if you're not impressed with the stock sound, you can upload your own IR's, another thing you cannot do with the UA line. (Note: I've tried the Dream and loved it, but features-wise, it's the worst value in the amp sim game.)
@jorgiewtfКүн бұрын
@ I understand your argument but I think that in this particular comparison, the term “value” is pretty subjective. What we have here is a fidelity vs features situation and while I don’t think the Walrus sounds bad at all, it’s still more of a “Jack of all trades, master of none” piece of gear. The UA pedals nail the particular amps they are emulating with extreme precision. They totally behave like the amps they’re designed after. Also, the Lion pedal emulates 3 different types of vintage Marshalls. While they don’t have the ability to load IRs, they come with plenty of beautiful emulated cabs to choose from. Probably the other amazing thing about UA amp pedals besides their perfect tone is the room knob which through some kind of voodoo puts your amp in a hyper-realistic space which NO reverb pedal can come close to. So again, fidelity vs features.
