Lots of naysayers here, but this is my dream rig. Most of what I do involves HTs, and this is basically an oversized HT I can use with HF and WiresX (C4FM is my jam), and it can be mounted in my car and uncoupled to use with a base-station antenna at my house, or for SOTA/POTA and at field days. Not to mention, it’s probably going to be the 3rd or 4th best rated receiver right next to the FTDX10 and the FT-710 or whatever. What an exciting transceiver! 🤩

6W ? or only 10W? G90, 20W with an exceptional built in ATU.
@mikeg1zrn8963 ай бұрын
Also 4M for the UK? Icom dropped the ball when they didn't include 4M on the 705, so hopefully Yaesu will include 70MHz.
@FreddyNietzsche.3 ай бұрын
If Xiegu bring out a G90 replacement , Ie: 20W SDR, large screen it will walk all over everything . The X6200, just a monit X6100 upgrade really, is fine but not a 20w beast like the G90.
@m1icl8273 ай бұрын
My reading of what they released is that as standard it does not come with the battery - you can use it with a DC supply. It states the optional ATU can be attached with the battery and optional fan. That would make sense as a lot of portable people use their own form of DC supply. I could be wrong - and usually am.....
@M0JSX3 ай бұрын
I’d be very surprised if the battery isn’t included.
@TonyYarusso3 ай бұрын
I read that as clarifying that since the ATU and fan attach to the back, be assured that does not mean they interfere with use of a battery.

Very exciting, but so many unanswered questions until we get the full specs. WiFi? Bluetooth? I agree that we need clarification on the dual receive, the standout feature when comparing to the 705.

6-6-48 duty cycle on FM means for each hour operating the expect you to be talking for 6 minutes, listening with an active receive for 6 minutes & the rig to be all quiet "squelched down" in standby receiving nothing for 48 mins (or proportionately..... ie don't expect 8 hours of TX time). If you simplistically expected zero power during standby & you were going to use this "all at once" in a contest then you could potentially expect 48 mins of TX (6 mins per hour x 8 hours) plus the same of active RX so my guess is you might get an hour and a half of heavy operation in a contest/SOTA/etc etc
@M0JSX3 ай бұрын
Thanks for that. I’ve learned something ☺️
@davidvaughn7752Ай бұрын
I wonder what the standby power draw is. I also backpack/SOTA and weight is an issue as well. Can't find specs on either of these important numbers. If you can shutdown the fancy band scope to save on power and if it isn't too heavy, then I might replace my 817ND.
@M0JSXАй бұрын
I suspect we’ll get those details closer to the launch of the radio. I suspect switching the band scope off won’t make a difference to current drain. That’s pure speculation on my part though!

I am looking to buy my first POTA radio. The 705 and FTX-1F are both being considered. Other hams have told me that 10 watts is a bit low and they prefer to work between 20-50 watts for SSB. Do you have any thought on the power needed for a successful POTA? Love your videos.
@M0JSX3 ай бұрын
Hi Craig. To be honest, it is best to start think about the antenna and work back from there. If you intend to use a full size resonant antenna (dipole, EFHW etc) then 10W should be enough to make plenty of QSOs (see my POTA video with the radio-stuff EFHW). If you wish to use a loaded whip antenna (Slidewinder, Mad Dog Coil, Wolf River Coil etc) then you might find that 10W is a bit of a struggle and something with 50-100W is required. My preference would be for a full size resonant antenna and 10W. This makes battery power a little easier too!
@craigskinner84893 ай бұрын
@@M0JSX Thanks Jonathan. Just watched your POTA video. My plan is to build my own EFHW. As far as the radio goes, the short list is the 705, 891 or the new FTX-1F. The main question I have been struggling with is the usefulness of 10w. You helped answer that. Craig VA3YBW

I think yaesu & icom are behind the curve on the portable markets needs. Both will look beautiful, but we buy a transceivers to talk to other people with transceivers. 5 or 10w simply doesn't cut it for the price point now. Fancy as they are id say i have 10:1 contacts with portable stations running a G90 compared to a ic-705 or a FT-817/8 good contacts too with good audio, not thin like the 817 or too wide like the 705. If you want to do true QRP these days you can get some brilliant credit card sized micro SDRs. My view is if you want to look good out portable get one of these or the IC-705 If you want to makes some contacts instead, get yourself a G90

Unfortunately, for some of us who want to be involved in HF, it's either questionable Chinese radios or nothing. I was lucky to have enough old inherited equipment to sell to fund my FT891. As much as the amateur radio community needs new blood, once a young person gets a license and they dream of going farther than a Baofeng, they are sticker-shocked right back to reality. I'm a Yaesu fan. But they've abandoned the average ham and become elitist.

If the RX is based on similar design to FT-710, it will leave IC-705 standing. Hope it as 70MHz/4M,
@m1icl8273 ай бұрын
Because of IF frequencies it is very rare to have a radio that does HF, 2m and 70cm to have 4m - or to get it to work effectively - the IF frequencies for 2m and 70cm in the radio are usually around 70Mhz so like the old FT-847 they have to pack that much filtering in they tend to be deaf for starters.
