I have watched so many interpretations of La Mer this week. Variety of video shots is always better in newer recordings. At about three minutes before the end, the flute and oboe, soon joined by harp and xylophone and modulating from minor to major chords is pretty awesome stuff. I hope that all universities require courses in classical music appreciation, and that every "educated" person is able to become well-versed in this, examples of the grand achievements of Western Civilization. I'm 79. Art and music appreciation classes in college altered my life forever. May 24, 2023. St. Joseph, MO, USA.

Boulez was the orchestra's Music Director for much of the 70's, but this 1992 comeback is the only video they made together.

As always, Boulez brings out details in the score that you've never heard before, even in masterworks as well- known as La Mer. Magical performance.

and Boulez did it without a musical score and baton, just his hands.

@@muslit Schmartypants. Compare the crescendo from mvmt 1 (7:54) versus ANYBODY else's version. Or 5:00 in. Compare from Bernstein's version. Bernstein is too heavy on the ocean effects to the expense of the feeling of same (the exact opposite of what Impressionism was about). The timing is also weird, feeling jazzish jerky. When you're a Jet, you swim in the ocean… Just look at the closing hand motions of the first movement. Bernstein is sweating and gyrating. Boulez gives that cool flick of the wrist. We're making a Renoir here, not a Pollock. I mean, c'mon: a Frenchman versus a New Yorker...who's going to do a better job? kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHSsfoCAd7Jmhrc

At about 7 mins. in I think I spotted a trace of emotion on the maestro's face...No, on second viewing, it seems that it was merely a suppressed belch

Yes, treating the sea as if it had no emotions!
@thehonkytonkduck2270 Жыл бұрын
@@jimp4170 His face is concentrated, yes, but there is so much emotion and subtlety in his arms and body language. I suppose that if he had some unusual facial expression (which actually ends up conveying nothing to the players) then you would enjoy that more, but simply speaking practically from the players perspective, it would only be distracting.

I prefer conductors who uses hands and fingers to express their conducting, they convey infinitely more information to the orchestra then does a mere stick, no pun intended.
