The Ohio State Band does a different show every week. They actually spend more time on the practice field each week than the football team. Because there are rules for football. But not for Bands. Tickets are too expensive and games are sold out for football. But two hours before each home game, the band performs a run through of that days pregame and halftime shows. People go to St John Arena to see that and then go home to watch the game on tv.

It was a lot of fun, but there is so much going on with the music and the choreography that all has to be committed to body memory before the season starts. The fellow who is "going crazy" with the acrobats is known as the "drum major", and has to be able to do a bunch of really athletic moves, plus twirl a mace, plus they are expected to do all the things the rest of the band does. They also can be involved in running the practices. It's an extremely competitive position, and you can find videos of people auditioning for it to get an idea of what you have to be able to do to even be considered for it.

I was color guard for marching band and it IS difficult. Color guard is definitely athletic because there is a lot of dance incorporated in MOST squads. We were color guard/drill team and we marched every event with the band. Most of us would give the drummers a break on the way back to bus and carry their bass drums/quad sets. And I can attest, doing what they do is VERY difficult. Staying in step, on point, on note, on time both with your position and your playing takes a lot! Its a lot of fun though.

The bell tones at the beginning of the Halo portion came from the Victory Bell housed in one of the stadium's towers. It can be heard across campus and is rung for 15 minutes after each victory except for when we beat our arch rivals, That Team Up North, when it rings for 30. edit: The visiting team came out on field because this was a particularly long halftime show - the band did a full show, then the tribute to the Athletic Dept, then Script Ohio (which is normally performed during the pre-game show) so they probably overran halftime by a couple minutes.

I was in the marching band and entered competitions, so during those times I got to see the other marching bands. It was super fun. I did in college for a while too. So you memorize the music and sets separately. Once both are memorized, the music, how many steps you take, your stopping point, and how fast and at what angle you need to do it in, then we combine everything. It was actually the whole point of band camp. To give us a chance to memorize everything before school starts and to get us back into marching shape. The football team is not supposed to enter the field until the marching band is done. We generally make the shows to fit the assigned time, so they likely came out early.

We would work up our basic show for each season and perform it for every game, with minor tweaks by changing or adding a song here and there, but it’s basically the same show for every game. I used to work at one of the buildings near Ohio State University stadium (AKA the Horeseshoe or The Shoe by its original shape, but they eventually enclosed the open end). Sometimes i had to go into work on Sat (most games on Sat) but heck no on game days. The parking lot is packed with tailgaters hours before game time. For people not familiar with American tailgating: bring your coolers of beverages, food, grills to cook on, chairs, etc and set that all up at the tail end of your vehicle or nearby area not blocking traffic (in the lawn). Party before the game...then go to the game...and even party a bit while waiting for the traffic to subside. (Tailgating is also done at concerts, etc). Some people, who don't have tickets to the game, will even go just to party and hang out. They also bring their TVs (sometimes big screen) to watch the game. Its the whole atmosphere that's exciting. Drinking, dancing, music, playing games... Loved the video! I only expected to see the band do Script Ohio and maybe a few other moves. There's a good reason why OSU is called The Best Damn Band in the Land!

I played in marching band in high school and college (back in the dark ages). The halftime show was new every week. There is usually a pre-game show as well, but it doesn't change as much. We started before school started in the fall. Then 2 hours per day, 4 days per week. You had to learn the music outside of rehearsal on your own time. At the beginning of practice on Mondays, we watched films of the halftime show to see if anyone was out of line or out of step and if there was a problem we needed to fix. Home games took about 6 hours on Saturday. Away games, we often reported to the buses before sunrise and returned very late, depending on the distance to be travelled. Each person's stride length had to be the same. Depending on the formation, there was usually 6 steps in 5 yards or 8 steps in five yards. I can still - 40+ years later - measure the size of a room with my step. When there is a formation that is not a straight line, the step size could change with each step, depending on your position in the curve. It was a crazy amount of work, but I still smile when I remember those days.

High school and college football - marching band performs at halftime every game. The stadium is generally "divided" with home team on one side, visitors on the other. Visiting team will perform first and oriented towards the home team side. The home team performs after them, oriented towards the visitor side. So the video you reacted to was from the visitor's side of the stands. The flourish at the end of spelling out Ohio in script was facing the home team's side. My daughter was in marching band in both high school and college. They start practicing for the school year close to a month before school started, so in August. In Texas that is our hottest month with temperatures frequently in the triple digits (F) and they are out in the asphalt parking lot (in high school, that is) from early morning (cooler) to late afternoon. They are learning songs and getting the configurations to work, so yes, they work very hard on this, as well as keeping their academics up. But they're young and enjoy it. And yes those uniforms & hats stink. 😁

I played clarinet in marching band in high school (back in the 60's! ). It was maybe the most fun I ever had in school but also the most work! The band you were watching was Ohio State University and they are probably the best university marching band in the USA. Almost every university has their own band and during sports season, they will perform during home games. That's where the home team is hosting and their own band plays. Like in that video, Ohio St Univ was playing whoever that other team was at OSU's stadium. Also, the band will play during the game during timeouts and such from their seats from their front row seats. They act as cheerleaders, sort of. They also play a short routine before the game and during halftime. And these univ bands will have a new routine every game. The bands also play at basketball games, too, along with numerous other events. Like I said . . . It's a tremendous amount of work for everybody in the band. But it's also very rewarding. Glad you liked this video. There are other OSU band vids on KZbin. There are lots of other univ band vids, too, like Texas A&M, Michigan St U, Louisiana (I think), etc. Just Google college marching bands -- there should be a lot of them. They're all good! ❤

The drill (knowing timing, matching that with music, plus matching it with our coordinates on the field & when we need to hit those coordinates while doing everything else at the same time), is NOT easy. Lol. For shorter people like me doing like a 4 to 5 step or more, you're basically leaping each step or you end up sprinting in time with the music somehow. It's EXHAUSTING. But the practices are also exhausting. We have to do strength & conditioning, & it was heavy on the discipline. I remember I forgot my coordinate book for drill & I had to automatically do 100 push-ups plus any other screw ups our section had during practice would add up. 10 push-ups each time we screwed up & when you have a lot of people in a section that can screw up, trust me those 10 push-ups add up. We run laps, do crazy exercises, and I remember they made us run up and down this giant hill till they said stop & of you question anything or complain you ended up doing more laps. Fittest time of my life. Lol. Set me up for marine corps training though! Like I said, it was military-style so all our commands & everything we did revolved around how the military does it including their own military marching band. But the military themselves will always be the top dogs. 👌😉

The band faces the side for the dignitaries and visiting fans. The back side that sees the formation backward is mainly the seats for students of the home school. The horshoe end is visiting fans and where the band sits. Assigning seating is strategic, to keep fans from both schools from mingling and fights starting. Students will smuggle in alcohol. Band musicians get scholarships just like 5he ball players. You have to have a lot of stamina.

I just went to the Indiana State Fair last week for band day. I watched over 40 high school marching bands compete. The top 15 do a different performance that evening before trophies are handed out. My granddaughter has one more year of college before becoming a band director.

BTW, the band is NOT the Ohio State Marching Band. It is The Ohio State UNIVERSITY Marching Band. Trust me, I lived within 10 miles of this school for 50 + years. They are two different schools. OSU is in Columbus, the capital of Ohio, OU is further south.

Generally the fields have a "home" side and a "visitor" side. The band is the home band and plays to the "home" side. The are amazing to watch. Love marching bands.

6:40 to 8:00 - Legend of Zelda (it was Link's sword as the final object). Then they went back to Super Mario

You can't even imagine the level of devotion these women and men put into one performance. They practice 6-7 days a week for JUST ONE PERFORMANCE. They take their performance as seriously as most people take food and water. Dude, they literally sacrifice everyday comforts to be able to do this at a level that you feel you need to react to. Compare what THEY did with what YOU did. THEY did it. YOU just watched it.

Okay, chill, yeah it is cool and takes a lot of work, no need to put someone else down. It isn't like he's from TTUN.

I was in Marching band in high school and yes it definitely takes a lot of band practice! I still don’t know what our actual formations looked like because on the field you only know where you are meant to be. This was a very cool show!

There are drum and bugle corps that put similar shows on every summer a great one to look up is 1988 “Santa Clara Vanguard” preformed a show with music from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” they changed the ending for the National Championships in Kansas City if you want to see a great marching band performance look this up.

Even in high school band we learned a new show nearly every week. We started band about 3 weeks before school started and had to have all music memorized for all season by the time school actually began. We started school an hour earlier than everyone else and had a few days after school that we had to stay then on one night we had to be there at 6pm and didn’t get out til 9-10

I went to school at The Ohio State University. We used to watch the band practice outside during the week.

I used to do marching band in school, it’s a lot of fun but a lot of work. You memorize and time everything and it can be really hot or cold. It’s incredibly fun though

In person its definitely cool to see, ppl dont wanna get up and go bathroom or get food during halftime when osu band plays! All my friends who weren’t IN the marching band went to the halftime games in high school just for the halftime show, and when we threw Superbowl parties we would only watch the halftime show on TV. xD

In high school 9-11th grade i was in marching band we learned one show and performed at half time and did competitions until October. I believe college marching bands learn a new show for every home game. It was a lot of fun.
