As someone who has had a child in the U of I Children’s Hospital and gotten to experience this words can’t even describe how special it is. It was a spark of hope that our family needed as our 6mo son fought for his life.

As you might have noticed, I'm an Ohio State fan. That being said, I really love this new tradition at Iowa. You would never have convinced me that a "new tradition" wasn't more than a contradiction in terms without this story. From the games I have watched from there on television, the opposing TEAM waves, too, and why wouldn't they? You don't get the opposing team participating in stuff that the home team plans very often. Good for the Hawkeyes, their fans, and the (too many) children in that hospital (which is absolutely state of the art).

Funny to see your comment on here. I was actually just telling someone that I thought it was kind of cool that when Ohio State came to Iowa City a few years ago they went and tour that hospital. Matter of fact coach Meyer even said that some of his players were visibly upset and it bothered them into the next day. I know the Urban Meyer has a lot of negative stuff said about him but that man and his wife donated money to that place I always thought that was cool

Thank you Courtney!! I was born in Iowa, I now am 68, living in my SUV homeless in California. I have Cancer and I don't know how long I have to live, maybe a year or two. Someday they will find this former Iowan passed away in this car of mine, but your video about the love and compassion of the people in my home state has brought temporary joy to my heart and has for a moment lifted my spirit. Through copious tears I write to you to thank you for showing my home state and the beautiful and positive things that everyday Iowans do. I'm an Iowa Hawkeye football fan, and again thank you for highlighting the University of Iowa football program's gesture of love towards the sweet children and their families who are suffering through life altering medical tragedies. I'm trying to raise enough money to buy a van, since my SUV has broken down and cannot drive, so I just sleep in it at night. If I could get a used van, I would drive back to Iowa to see my high school sweetheart of 50 years ago before I get too sick and die. I want to see my Janey one more time before I go to meet my Savior Jesus Christ. 47 years ago, in 1973, two years after we graduated, Janey gave me a 'good-bye kiss' that has never been equalled by any woman since. I still remember that kiss, my lips still remember that kiss! And I want to return that kiss to it's rightful owner before I die. Both Janey and I deserve a chance to see each other before I leave this mortal coil. Our love, though never officially documented by a marriage certificate, has survived many decades, many life changes, husbands for her, girlfriends for me since I've never been married, neither distances in geographical space, nor illnesses, and challenges too enumerable to count have dimmed our emotion---and eternal LOVE REMAINS between Janey and I. A wise man once wrote, "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is LOVE." Courtney, I have faith that I'll see Janey one more time, and I have hope that my eyes will see Janey and my Hawkeye State one more time, because my LOVE for Janey still remains! LOVE will carry me home again! LOVE will carry me back to the gentle verdant rolling hills and Fields of My Dreams---IOWA and a girl named Janey! Janey, waits for her 'Knight in Weathered Armor' to return to her. I'm a silly enough old man to believe that my arms will once again hold the only woman I ever loved. LOVE will reunite Janey and I and give us one last time to hold one another before this world dims and falls away from me! If you can facilitate a reunion between Janey and myself, please contact me at 'KenandHawk7@gmail.com'

This has become the greatest new tradition in sports. I'm an Iowa alumni, attended before they even broke ground on the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital, but I'm proud of my alma mater. EDIT: Since that started a few years ago, when the Hawkeyes travel to other venues, the home team and bowl games pick up that tradition and send their love to the kids at UISFCH.

I was at this College Gameday at Virginia Tech. It was a really cool moment watching this clip, I cried a bit and I know other people did as well. This part of the show always has a segment that is supposed to tug at your heat strings and people joke that when they hear Tom Rinaldi's voice, they know that they are about to cry their eyes out. Despite that, it was still a special moment cause you know Tom is such a master at this. The scene where he doesn't even ask Kirk a question and just lets his emotions come through without any words was so powerful to watch. It was definitely something I was glad to experience in person.

A catch phase used for the Hawkeyes is "Fight for Iowa". As much as it is for the team, fans and state, these kids are Iowa on Saturday. Saturday home games in Kinnick are a chance to remind those kids and families that they special to us and we will fight for them. They fight so hard every other day of the week to live and survive. Even during a pansemic) this tradition, it is all amazing!! It was hard since I was alone at the hospital. But it was so cool to understand and have a chance to see the stadium in that way. I went to Iowa and during my time there the Hawkeyes had 4 great seasons and I even got to go to Miami to watch them win the Orange Bowl (thats one of the top bowl games at the end of the season) but I have never been more proud to be a Hawkeye than when the Wave started. The only thing I'm sad about is that I graduated before the tradition started

Actually I was introduced to my very first Iowa game and it was a eye opener for the vast difference between a few other universities that were in our vendor contract, but I've never seen a terrible crowd in Iowa stadium even in the last two games deep in the winter

Ah my alma mater Iowa, been there from 2008 to 2012 and miss it so much. I remember that hospital was under construction during my time there until the year after I graduated. Iowa City is such a wonderful place, full of kind and amazing people, and I'm glad that they created such a heartwarming tradition.

We look forward to every home game because we know at the end of the 1st quarter we wave to our tv along with the 70,000 inside the stadium. The time out between the 1st and 2nd quarter is allowed to go longer so that both teams and the refs can also wave. It's not just kids from Iowa in our hospital, so while you might not know who is there, it doesn't matter. Just knowing you are making some kids and their families smile for a bit of time, take their mind off of their illness for awhile is so worth it. Just a few days ago, my husband had an appt. in the regular hospital, and before going to our car in the parking garage, we went up to the top floor, something you hadn't been able to do since the pandemic, but it was finally ok to go up there again. It was so beautiful to see every seat in the stadium, and a bright blue sky made it possible to see for at least 12 miles into the distance. I feel so blessed to live in Iowa.

I was in the Iowa City Hospital for a brain tumor. It was basketball season, and the basketball team came to the hospital to visit the patients. One of the team members was someone I knew of, they signed autographs, I thought it was awesome.

Hello to you! When my husband was in the cancer center at the u of Iowa hospital,he was having surgery that day. The nurse came by and asked me if I’d like to go upstairs with the kids that day, iowa was playing a game and it was amazing. I got hugs and gave hugs to several that day, especially when I told them about my John and his cancer. I lost him in 2022 when the cancer went to his brain. Nobody will understand the pain of this till they go through it. Go Hawkeyes! ❤️❤️❤️

My own life story somewhat reflects what many of those kids go through, as I was born with a birth defect (spina bifida) and spent the first the first three months of my life in the hospital. Though I have never been to, or am I from, Iowa, but this is a great tradition which started out of a kind gesture.

I have been all over the world even once saw an Australian rules football game while in Perth... Honestly Courtney, there is no place quite like Iowa. From its riverside cliffs and bluffs, to its rolling hills and flat rich farming soil... ( one of our states nicknames is "The Land Between Two Rivers" kinda biblical if you ask me...) Iowa is quietly, respectably, the greatest place to call home. As for the wave... Its really just the way we are. But think of it... a 9yr old boy, deathly ill, scared, probably a bit lonely stuck in a hospital... Gets 70,000 + well wishes from total strangers that say, " We know you're there... get better and come be here with us." Proud to be Iowan!

I'm really glad you reacted to this!!! I was at the very first game that this tradition started. I don't think there was a dry eye at Kinnick Stadium. As I saw on an earlier comment, you are invited to an Iowa game to experience "the wave". You won't regret it. Here is another video you must watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6u1fJWaZ9p3fLM
