I think the NZRU just finally caught up on what most people have been thinking and saying which is that we are not the best anymore, far from it. We did the whole continuity thing and we got left behind and that’s a fact. We need a change and a shake up, a new modern perspective and view on the game. Whether Razor is successful or not I still think this is the right direction we need to head in. You look at the successful coaches around the world at the moment and it’s not surprising that they are all younger and have come out of a more modern era of rugby.

That's one way of looking at it. One other would be to say that no team in any sport remains the undisputed best forever, and that concerted effort (along with no little expense) by overseas foes to improve their own standards have eaten away at NZs previous advantages. Another would be to examine some of the external factors: sustained drain both of playing and coaching talent to overseas clubs and nations, lack of money in the NZ game to retain people, collapsing support (see the pathetic SR and NPC attendance) and reduced participation all add up to a rugby nation in decline. Yet another would be to cast an eye over the broader rugby landscape and see how various factors (including NZR incompetence) played into the decision-making behind Fozzie being hired over Razor originally. With regard to the post-2019 coaching appointment process itself, it's been clear for a while that the NZR board's preferred candidate to follow Steve Hansen was Joe Schmidt; the fact that he rebuffed their advances to join the ticket in 2019 and ruled himself out of any future role following the RWC in Japan left them scrambling. Next on the list seems to have been Warren Gatland, however his commitment to the B&I Lions tour in 2021 made him untenable, which meant they would either need to find someone else or appoint a caretaker until Gats completed his other assignments. The lazy, complacent attitude of the board, which failed to recognize that the ABs job didn't hold as much appeal for some targets as they'd assumed, led to them missing out on secondary choices like Jamie Joeseph or Dave Rennie, who were contracted elsewhere, so they were left with a stark choice, Fozzie or Razor; one a long-serving but unexceptional assistant and another a provincial maverick with no convincing international rugby experience whatsoever. In the end they went with the proven commodity, but even then only on a two-year contract (coincidentally timed to expire exactly when Gatland finished with the Lions), and surrounded him with journeymen assistants that most people probably assumed could do little harm, if not that much good. Razor clearly didn't impress them enough back then, and remains unproven above SR level (the limp performance of his Crusaders team against the 2017 Lions can't have inspired much faith, especially since that same touring side flopped in weeks after against the Highlanders and Hurricanes, and had been belted by the lowly Blues a week earlier; to date that remains his only exposure to international-level opposition). To compound matters, Gatland subsequently tanked with the Chiefs, and lost the tour to SA in truly dismal fashion; watch how quickly Fozzie and Co. had their contracts renewed after that summer. It's easy to see from the reaction to the series loss against Ireland last year who the board have really favored all along: Schmidt. His hasty press-ganging into the coaching lineup after the team crashed the first week in Mbombela reeked of them finally getting their man, and his impact on the team (along with Jason Ryan) was immediate. Now, all of this is mostly circumstantial; public opinion no doubt plays a part, but the fact that Schmidt again declined to apply for the head coaches role this year, and a lack of genuine challengers being available is what has most likely led, finally, to the appointment of Scott Robertson. Whatever noises NZR might be making now, it's clear they wanted somebody, almost anybody else. Their reasons are anyone's guess, but it may well be they fear a repeat of the ill-fated era of John Mitchell - incidentally the last ABs coach appointed directly from SR - and view the similarly ill-starred tenure of Robbie Deans (Razor's principle coaching mentor) at the helm of Australia with discomfort. Personally I wouldn't blame them. Maybe Razor will be transformational for the ABs or maybe he'll run aground on the same domestic talent and standards issues, along with increased quality of international competition, that have hampered the team's performances since at least 2016. We'll just have to wait and see.

I wouldn't go that far - the ABs have left a legacy and they represent the benchmark of RUGBY - I cry when they beat the Boks, but I rejoice when they beat the English. I reckon there is still a LOT of gas left in that tank!

Don’t worry. If the ABs lose any match by more than 3 points, the pundits will turn on him like coyotes on a roadrunner.
@Formakiwi
@Formakiwi Жыл бұрын
Not a perfect analogy, since the Roadrunner typically evades the Coyote with ease. The question is, how quick would the public be to admit a mistake if the ABs went on a losing streak? My guess is, not very.

@@Formakiwi, the reality is that pundits are like movie critics. They don’t play or coach anymore, but are experts in their own minds. Most movie critics have never made a movie themselves. Why people pay any attention to them is a mystery. In rugby, few AB pundits admit that the opposition are getting better. The gap between NZ rugby and everyone else has narrowed. Parity in the top ten is actually a good thing. Being crushed by 100 points by the All Blacks did nothing for the recipients, but boosted NZ egos. So they embarrassed another group of players, made them feel like shit, and discouraged kids from taking up the sport. Nothing to be proud of. That’s why so many rugby fans love to see the All Blacks lose. That’s why pundits like Kirwan and Marshall whine so much when their team gets thumped, or has a streak of poor performances. Their world and self-image has been damaged, even though they had nothing to do with it. And the first analogy was fine because the pundits don’t catch their targets either, they just chase and annoy them. Razor is brighter than all of them put together, and will do well.

Foster was always coming off contract after the RWC and he chose not to re-apply. It is standard practice to have a plan in place rather than wait until the last minute and pick over the dregs. If the NZRU waited until after the RWC to appoint Robertson that ship would have sailed.

@@andrewrome7037 This is not England Andrew. Appointing a new coach at this stage of a RWC cycle is tantamount to a hospital pass. Robertson deserves a fair crack and as there will be a mass exodus of senior players after the WC, 2024 is the ideal time to introduce a new coach with a fresh squad & fresh ideas.

I can't wait to see how this works out. My deep deep dark feeling - Fozzy was much better than you ever gave credit for, and a fashionable appointment won't solve some of the deep problems in NZ at the moment. Most people will kill me for saying this - but your going to have to stoop to Warren Gatland to win you a world cup again............ in my opinion ;) Oh yes, and Ted was a absolute absolute genius. Laid the foundations for about 15 years, and I still feel like NZ have not recovered since he has left (and have actually slowly got worse). And I know that is hard to say, but I know what NZ expects of its rugby.

I Believe New All Blacks Coach SCOTT 'RAZOR" ROBERTSON, Will do exeptionally Great. For he will stick to his mehods of the way to play the game, as he did with the Canterbury Crusaders Succesfully and also bring in even more Professionalism to his Tactics to take the All Blacks to even more new heights in the modern game. He is very Passionate driven, with great assistant coaches by his side, to even enhance practically and tecnically better Performance from the Rugby players as a whole.
