I remember it well , 1975, he was bringing my first karate gi to me at his Wallasey dojo, same building in this clip with Gary Sandland, thats me in the white gi, along with Ritchie Herbert. Gary turned up at the dojo wearing sunglasses, and when he took them off, he had a massive pair of black eyes, and recounted the story to us all.

Kiwis aren't big on talking themselves up, and people take their quiet and unassuming nature as softness (as an Aussie, I prefer Kiwis to Aussies, as a rule) ... but god help anyone who goes out of their way to provoke them. I worked with quite a few of those fellas: they always treated people well and didn't start shit out of insecurity, but they were bad, bad news for anyone who started with them. I'd have one good Kiwi working with me over half a dozen loud-mouth bullies.

Interesting story. Reminds me of someone else (my dad) who had a similar background from New Zealand, but was only locally infamous - dealing with local gangs, cleaning up pubs and clubs in the late 70's early 80's, etc. But in the end we all die & life goes on. A live dog is better off than a dead lion. RIP dad.

Dear Enquirer 2.0, One thing I've noticed while watching video clip of Mister Spiers is that his fighting moves are simple and straight to the point. There's no flashiness (fantasy fighting), just bite the bullet and get it done. I see no high kicks, no spinning and no jumping. Just a tough, solid man who likes getting in close and utilizing punches & elbows. Makes me wonder why so many "martial arts" schools make everything so damn complicated. I'm no expert and I may be wrong, but that's how I see it. By the way, I really enjoy your content. Please keep these videos coming. All the best from the Peoples' Republic of Chinada (the land freedom forgot). S #NationalFilmBoardofChinada

I remember gaz spires at the amusements (the carousel) in southport. I was young. He had flip flops on. Hes was with his mates sitting around. His mate asked him to have a go on the boxing machine. He kicked off his flip flops and whacked it with a round house kick. Bells ringing from the machine he put his flip flops back on and walked away. A serious guy.

He might've been a hard nut, but disciplined martial artist he probably was not. A true martial artist does every thing in his/her capability to _NOT_ fight. My sensai Balbinder Dhaliwal Singh, started off every newbie night with a statement about what you should do if surprised.. I'm paraphrasing but: _"..to those of you that are new, always remember that your legs are the most important asset..."_ Now everyone is thinking 'yeah karate kicks obviously..' But Dhali continued: _"...you use them to get as far away from that particular area and situation.. you run.."_ The style I studied focused on there not being any brawls or scraps.. it focuses on waiting for that 1 moment and executing the strike... BANG! 1 strike..1 outcome.
