Newark Fire Department responded to a structure fire on 3-22-18. This was a detached garage that was 35 ft by 25 ft. NFD responded to a fire in this same garage approximately 15 hours prior to this fire. The first fire was contained to a small portion of the garage, damaging one wall and some of the contents. The cause of this fire is currently under investigation. No injuries were reported on either fire.
NFD responded with 2 engines, 2 ladders, 2 medics and a battalion chief with a total of 20 firefighters. The fire was quickly contained with crews utilizing a 2.5" line, a 1.75" line and a yard lay consisting of 2.5" line with a gated-Y with 100 ft of 1.75". There were 2 cars inside the garage that were destroyed.

After retiring from 32 yrs in the fire service, 21 yrs as a paid Captain, there is one thing that will always be constant in the fire service. All Officers In Charge, OICs have to make split second decisions that affects the lives of everyone on scene. I have plenty of video of just the side of an apparatus, lol. Sometimes there just isn't anything that can be done about it. The fire comes first. I think what you are referring to is when Ladder-1 pulled up the driver/operator knew we wouldn't be using the stick so he angled the truck to block the street. Great move on his part. Something as simple as that could prevent a firefighter from getting run over by a passing car.

Thank you for posting these videos, they are very informative. I do have a question about your radio phraseology. The format "who I'm calling" followed by "who I am", such as "Control-1, Chief1".. "Chief 1 " seems to be much more common. The main benefit being the called party hears their call sign first, and can then listen to who is calling them. It appears you're using the reverse. ATC for example also uses this method, such as "New York Tower, Delta 101. " "Delta 101, New York Tower, " I'm just curious why your department has chosen the reverse. Thanks!

Everybody is trained a little bit different. This is just how we have done it for as long as I can remember. The upside is if I clip the beginning of the message the receiver should still hear me say their unit. Example (Battalion-1) to Rescue-1. They at least hear Rescue-1 so they should answer.

Question:. Do engines, which usually have an onboard water tank, usually have foam capabilities on the same engine, or would foam abilities usually come from a different more "specialized" foam engine? Also, I assume that any time a vehicle is burning, it is usually fought with foam rather than water, or maybe water first, and THEN foam. Is this correct? Thank You.

What is a "Yard lay"? Is that like a hotel pack? Never heard that term before.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
Our yard lay is a 2.5" line (200 or 250 feet) with a gated-Y attached to it. Then a 1.75" line finishing it out. It is a great yard to get into a courtyard or situations where there is a house behind a house. The best part is the second arriving engine brings their high-rise bundle (100 ft. of 1.75" hose) and can quickly get a second line into operation.

Our fire marshal is not auto dispatched at our department in his after hours. May be the same in this case and he is not dispatched for small fires or fires such as grill fires, out of control leaf fires and fires where nothing of value is burned. For instance we got a call of bales on fire in a roadway, the farmer noticed his bales on fire and got them off his trailer and into the middle of the road so not to cause a brush fire. He said he saw someone flick a cigarette out their window on their way past him and didn’t want to pursue any legal action as they were trash bales. No investigation was done.

Dumb question from a total civilian here: In most of your other videos, I see the first line on the fire with a very aggressive attack, push right up to the window or door and douse everything inside. In this case, they remained a significant distance back, and directed their water at the roof opening and only slantingly into the visible window on the right. Can you expand on what I observed there? I'm just very curious! Thank you very much for posting these videos, they are extremely interesting from the standpoint of someone with no experience at all.
@hvfd5956
@hvfd5956 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is temperature. When you have a fire with this much advance, the amount of heat coming out just can't be understood until you have been there. Even with the turnout gear, there is only so much you can take before your brain says - get the heck out of here! It's been a lot of years since I was riding, fresh out of high school - back when they used to allow FF to ride the tail board. I was never so happy as when the captain told me to take a jump seat. The only problem is I ended up right behind the real train air horn that was on Houston Engine 28. Dang that thing was loud - even behind it. Back to this fire - I hadn't heard the terminology of yard lay in a long of time and forgot what exactly it was. In Houston, we would often use that on apartment fires because that got us two lines in operation quicker. We had a group of apartments built in the mid-1960's with aluminum wiring that was a regular weekly thing, usually on Friday nights. I was thinking 2 1/.2 right form the start, but the folks on Rescue 1 took the correct approach - use what you have and get water on the fire.

I have watched many of Chief Decker's videos, and the Newark Fire Department is an example for us all to follow. It is idiotic to post a disrespectful comment about that line, because we have no idea why that choice was made. If the 2nd wasn't a rekindle, then that's extremely suspicious. Top work again to Sgt Decker and his team.

There was an issue with the electric panel, so there is a chance that the power came back on to the garage after the first fire. I'm hoping it isn't a rekindle, but we are all human.

My neighbor had a medical problem and they sent out that huge ladder truck. I was wondering why they send out a truck like that for a medical problem. Seems like it would cost a lot to run that truck. EMS was there before the fire truck was. Can you help me out understand what trucks they send out and why? Thanks for the info.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. If the 911 dispatchers believe it to be a serious (life threatening) medical emergency they will send the closest unit in addition to a transport unit (medic/squad/ambulance, whatever they call it in your area). Sometimes this is and engine and sometimes it's a ladder truck. In Newark all engines and ladders are staffed with a paramedic and are ALS equipped, meaning they have a heart monitor/defibrillator, a drug box with numerous life saving medications and a full airway kit. If somebody is having a serious medical emergency, getting paramedics to the patient two or three minutes faster could mean the difference between life and death. There are some other reasons that a fire truck would be sent, but most usually it's in an effort to reduce response times and provide ALS care as quick as possible.

Thank you for that information. One more question. I hear you say on the radio that someone is EMS sector. What does that mean? Thanks again!
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
@@lidsman2221 I always assign a medic crew (usually the 2nd arriving medic) to the EMS sector. Their job is ready their EMS equipment on the cot and move it close to the scene, to be ready in case a firefighter gets hurt, or if we rescue a civilian that needs medical attention.

Good question, and good answer from Chief Decker. I work as a full time paramedic in another part of Ohio. Our fire department is staffed part time. They regularly help us with serious medical calls. It's not that we need "that huge ladder truck" but we need the personnel on that huge truck. If they came in a pickup or car, then got a fire call, they would have to respond back to the station and get the fire truck, wasting time.
@46fd04
@46fd04 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with Alvon911. Where I live, people get all wound up about a "million dollar truck" showing up to do "an Ambulance driver's job". Its not about what vehicle they arrived on. Its all about 3 well-trained Firefighters helping a citizen in need, AND, the patient will arrive at the Hospital faster because there will be 5 or 6 people on the scene, inc. 2 or 3 Paramedics (not Ambulance drivers). After patient care, our FF's are in charge of clearing a path for the stretcher to get out to the Ambulance (we regularly commandeer elevators in highrise buildings), and getting all the Paramedics' equipment out to the Ambulance. If Medical calls were only handled by two Paramedics, in some cases it would be forever before they departed for the Hospital. Having firefighters attend very serious medical calls is essential for optimum patient care.

Chief Decker: How many men are assigned to each company?
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
Typically we have two on every medic and three on the engines and ladders. We were heavy staffed on this night so here's how this went (without making this sound overly complicated). We had two medics running out of Station-1 (Medic-1 & Medic-4). They always jump on Ladder-1 during a fire assignment, so we had four on Ladder-1 (Medic-1 & Medic-4) stay parked. I had four on Rescue-1 and four on Ladder-2. Engine-3 had three and Medic-2 and Medic-3 both had two. A total of 20 firefighters including me. It seems like we never have fires when we are heavy staffed but it is awesome to have four coming off of a rig when we do have a fire.

I only wish I could see this Chief get at LEAST 1 or 2 more chiefs on scenes like these. Multiple chiefs at full box alarms or higher. Correct me if I'm wrong but this guy is running water supply, safety, and fire suppression. Doing it darn well, but that isn't the point. It's too much. Especially when it's a simple thing to see and understand. I do however also wonder if it is a matter of this city keeping taxpayer $$ locked in the government dark rat hole. FD's always the last to get the loot, while also always being the fire area of government that need it. I wish Chief Decker many more years of service in a Chief role.
