The Walthers Proto engines are a continuation of the Life-like Proto 2000 locos. Walthers bought out the Life-like brand and improved on the reliability of these locos. They are pretty good running engines, and they look prototypical as well. I bought a Walthers Proto GP-7, and it looks and runs well!

The trend in locomotives has been to produce better running engines, and they have also increased the price of most of these locos. Compared to what was made in the 60s and 70s, the majority of manufacturers have improved their products. Bachmann has greatly improved its engines, and as a result, they are becoming more expensive. The result of this competition is that many products are better, but are also more expensive. It comes down to what companies you prefer.
