In this video I take a walk into Newcastle with my two dogs and reveal some secrets about Grainger Town that you may not know. I also check out the Quayside and mention the developments going on in Newcastle.
For more detail about the river under Grey St, check out a video Jordan Reeve did recently. Here's the link:-

In the late 80's when working as a contractor in the basement of a shoe shop on Shakespeare Street I was able to wander around way below street level and I could hear rushing water. I was told it was "the river that no one knows about". Interesting to see you mentioning it.

25 years ago when I worked at Baratts Shoe shop on Northumberland Street, in the basement on wet days we could pull up the drain and see the river flowing fast down the street. It was amazing and you'd never be able to do that now!
@TynesideLife

It doesn’t follow under Northumberland St bud. It flows under Eldon Square as it arcs around to Leazes Park. In addition, the Lort Burn is several metres under ground. You were looking at something else, but it wasn’t a burn. Sorry
@OrbvsTomarvm
@OrbvsTomarvm Жыл бұрын
where abouts was barratts again? the lort burn used to swing down st thomas' street past the old entrance to haymarket marksies that was on a lane called prudhoe lane that ran into the now lost prudhoe street (the middle thereof; at it's low point) and then under eldon square/northumberland street; out past brunswick church; across the road past greys monument; under central arcade meeting and merging with the little lam burn (from darn crook) on market street before travelling under the west side of grey street; down dean street then into the tyne via sandhill. if you were on the east side of northumberland street then the likely culprit would be the erick burn that you can still see the valley of if you look down the side street adjacent to greggs further on. i suspect you were seeing the lort though if there was that much water involved at that place. the lort was originally called "seven wells head" around its source in leazes, as it collated from seven springs there (you can see the seven spring pipes entering the lake all around it), so i imagine it produced some flow during downpours. Brilliant find, and thank you!!! 🤗

Fun fact earl grey lived in howick hall a lovely village in Northumberland on the coast. The local kids would jump off the cliffs into the sea but was very dangerous as hidden rocks below the water. Early grey paid for a team of guys to dynamite the rocks away to prevent injuries to the kids. This beach in my opinion is one best beach in Northumberland. Love Newcastle but can understand why Early gray would prefer the quiet retreat of the rugged Northumberland coast line to the busy streets of Newcastle.

I absolutely love this city and will miss it dearly but it's the right choice for us just now for family reasons. I can't wait to continue watching your videos and get my slice of the toon from Glasgow. Top work pal, keep it up. Wee tip for you, there is an absolutely fantastic lager brewed in Glasgow (to german standards) called St Mungo. The Broad Chare is the only pub in Newcastle that sells it on draft. It's well worth a try when you're next down that way - I promise you won't be disappointed.

I was with a group of workmates that relined the sewers around Newcastle city centre in the late 80s/early 90s. It was dirty hard work in pretty grim conditions! You could walk from the quay all the way to spittal without bending Doon. The junction at mosley Street has a massive underground structure very impressive. The shft outside the old Marconi office is very deep also.

Great video Eddy, know the Waterstones near to Grey's Monument that building was originally built as Emerson Chambers which is an example of Edwardian extravagance.

The underground river runs through Haymarket from Leazes Park, Barras Bridge went over it. Also I understood a Geordie was defined as a distance from banks of the Tyne. I was born on Barnesbury Road Benwell. Great videos H.

Hi Drew, sorry but you’re incorrect. The Lort Burn doesn’t flow under Barras Bridge, the Pandon Butn did, a different river. The Lort Burn flows roughly South East from Leazes Park down to the River Tyne by the current Hard Rock Cafe. I’ve researched quite extensively the origins of what a Geordie is and the myth of it being a distance from the Tyne is exactly that, a myth. If you check out the video I did on the subject in my History and Culture Playlist, I set out the historical origins of what a Geordie is and isn’t. Cheers bud 👍🏻

Good video. Would like to see a video about the blacksmiths etc back in 1800s. My family had business back then would be interesting to find out about the history around that time in Newcastle and surround areas.

Do you mean the pub or the trade? I’ve done a few videos about that period but if you can specify your interest a bit more, I’ll put something together 👍🏻

Yes thank you for your video. Only went to Newcastle for the first time yesterday. Sat 7 jan?2023. In my last comments I forgot to mention when the boat comes in. And was it ??? Charlie Wilson's war t.v. series.??? Mr bolan likely lads, new tricks. Really love that geordie accent. Now your research into Newcastle and what you are producing is a valuable gift to me any how . In your sharing of what you got to offer. Its brilliant brother. You likened unto another fred Dibna. He was a good great narrator. And you are doing a similar thing. Keep it up as long as you can I for one very appreciating what you are doing. Lovely content and very interesting. Cannot fault anything so far. Thank you once again for your taking the time to be a blessing to and for other people. What you offer is very important. Thankyou.
