Christmas is coming and I wanted to get this project done. Well I did it! I painted the brown wood shelves, cabinets, and fireplace mantel in the great room Village Green, a color by Behr (I used Benjamin Moore semi-gloss), and I've been busy decorating our home for my traditional and classic New England Christmas home tour. I even got all dressed up to give you a sneak peek (and yes I saw I spelled it as peak in the video ;-) ) holiday home tour of what I have done so far, for Christmas decorating, around the house and to give you more updates on what I will be doing for decorating projects in our antique cape house in the country.
I love the New England English Country style and classic New England Maritime style our antique home is starting to take on especially now that our great room reminds me of one of the rooms in the movie A Christmas in Connecticut.

You’ve done a marvelous job with the painting and decor! You chose the perfect paint color! I think the unpainted walls look beautiful as they are, or perhaps you could bleach them out and gain some lightness. I agree that painting them might prove too difficult! I’m distressed that you can’t find your foxes! I dearly despise not able to find something! Perhaps they were left at Groton?

The painted bookcases are just beautiful!!!!! I would keep the wood as is because the contrast is so nice however I would condition it. It looks very dry. I would almost be tempted to put a semi-gloss or better yet a satin shellac to brighten it up even more. This house is going to love the changes you make and so am I.

I think if you want to paint the paneling, hire painters to come in and use a spray gun that would get all of the holes etc. I’m not a fan of paneling and I love the green. Leaving the nail etc holes would give a nod to all of the history but would improve the room alo t by getting rid of the paneling.

You toured a consignment shop and showed us a large wood hutch with all glass panels on top. I can definitely see that in your house, maybe against the back kitchen wall. For your kitchen design: open up the pass thru room (where you had your liquor bar and golf clubs 💙) so it opens up into the kitchen. I'd make that room a huge pantry with built in shelving and drawer cabinets. You could even locate the washer dryer there behind bifold closet doors. Find an antique drop leaf table (to use for folding clothes and a million other uses).

Linda, your painted cabinets are just the brightness the room needed. I adore the color. I hope you keep the other walls the natural color- it reflects the history of your home. I’d be afraid that painting all the walls would make the room look just ordinary. I love how the cabinet wall is a beautiful focal wall with the paint. Isn't it awful? My husband and I have tackled so many projects by ourselves just from watching KZbin videos. Bigger projects like siding and flooring obviously will require professionals. I have 3 boys and have found myself encouraging them to learn a trade since it seems like that's in such demand.

@@elana81RDH All of the guys on This Old House encourage young people to learn the trades. Not only are they in demand but they pay well too. The added perk is that instead of being burdened with a huge college loan hanging over their head, they can apprentice with someone(getting a smaller paycheck while they still live at home)then as soon as they pass their test or get their license, they can immediately start to earn good money and no debt! Win win! 🙌🏻 I have also heard of parents, instead of college, setting their kids up with a small business like pressure washing. Then they go around to all of the landscapers for referrals (cause everyone knows that after you have sidewalks edged, etc. you need a good pressure washing). 🤣😂😅

Hi, Linda: You've made such great progress with your new home!! Try not to get discouraged. As I'm sure you know, home improvements are difficult living through, but well worth it in the end. The painted wood fireplace walls look nice! I would keep the rest of the room natural. Also, I like your wallpaper in the Tavern Room. It will finish the room off nicely. In your room with the wicker chairs, I have something similar in my home, much smaller though. It has a brick floor and barn-board 3/4 of the way up the wall. We call it our Mud Room. When we bought the home over 40 years ago, I wondered if the decor of the room would stand the test of time, and it has! We never changed it (except for painting the sheetrock walls above the barn-board) and it has been SO useful living in New England. Being able to sit down on a bench and remove wet shoes and boots and hang up coats during the winter prevents the mess from being tracked any further!! Good luck with your continued renovations and your surgery. I look forward to watching your home transition over time.

Oh how I wish you lived closer I know you’d know someone who would appreciate the antiques the person who bought my mother in law’s historic home (1857) is selling. He has an auction page up she discovered last night I could link it if anyone here is in VA and interested. He’s taking the house apart selling fixtures original to the home as well. It’s just devastating. She had thought she found someone who was going to love and care for the home and he’s destroying it. 😭

Absolutely GORGEOUS! I love the wood panel walls and wouldn't touch them. But, if your husband would like them painted, then maybe a good compromise would be to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls (or slightly lighter). Then you still get the contrast of the wood book shelves and he gets the Village Green around the room. Food for thought....either way it's lovely!

Please leave the one wooden wall. It looks great with the painted cabinets and with the hunting scenes it adds just a hint of rustic. Plus leave it to pay tribute the the 1940s. I absolutely love the way it looks now. On exposed wood, those wormholes and imperfections will look normal. With paint, they will stick out like a sore thumb.

As much as I would love to paint an entire room that green color, I just don't have a place for it. However, you better BELIEVE I'm going to paint my dining room hutch this color! Perfection with the black hardware! Looks like something out of the 1994 version of Little Women. Home Depot, here I come! 😍

I’m not big on painted wood but the one side looks great! because there is so many knots on the other side, I wouldn’t paint it. It gives the room character makes the other side stand out Sometime less is more..

I speak French, but as Mr. Faudree was born in a tiny town in the middle of Oklahoma, I'm going to guess that he didn't pronounce his name a la Francais. Well, thinking his family didn't, though he may have adopted the French pronunciation himself. I'm guessing there would be an accent egout over the first "e". ( kind of looks like a forward slash on your keyboard. That would make the second syllable a long "a". Like "bake". The first syllable vowel sound is actually a blend of "aw" and "O" like smoke, but that's very subtle for most American ears. Pronouncing it like "bawdy" is good. I'm sorry if that's too much information. I'm a "language" nerd! LOL

What color is the Paint you used? It looked like a Mossy Green when you were painting, but more of a Willamsburg Blue when you showed us how you decorated the Bookshelves. The Brown Wood Paneling doesn’t need to be painted, but if you do paint it, leaving the Crevices & holes add Charm. You could do a Wash w/Watered-Down Paint in the Color of the Bookcases, but would need Sanding with an electric sander to remove the Brown Stain, then use the Paint but as a Wash which will be more Rustic! Suggestions from California but I did live in New England so I understand the look you’re going for… Really charming & elegant, warm & inviting !

Linda, whenever I am in the middle of a renovation and/or redecoration project, I get so anxious to be done with it all. But God always puts time in the process, which allows me to ruminate and make the needed adjustments. In the end, I see why things had to happen the way they happened. Of course, trying to do projects during the holidays is always extra stressful. You will get a 2nd wind in the new year. Glad you are taking time to dress up and enjoy the reason for all your hard work!

I have to laugh… When I was watching this and you were talking about making up words and Linda isms, my hubby was walking past and he went this woman truly is your kindred spirit… I tend to make up words or I go to say a word and I know it's not coming out right but I can't remember what the right word is but you know exactly what I mean when I say it, for example, calling a windshield a window shield… Except in my family they called him Sandi isms 😂❤️🌲....your home is looking beautiful...love, love, love the colour of the paint...put your feet up for a bit and enjoy it! 🙂

My thoughts: Now that you've painted over such beautiful wood... I would wrap the room but keep the trim around the room door, as well as the door.

I like white hot chocolate, too! I even prefer to eat white chocolate. My SIL, LINDA, has funny, loving, silly 'Lindaisms', too. ....I would paint the insides of the cabinets a light, reflective finish, paint. It will be much easier to try to find something in a light colored cabinet than looking into a dark hole trying to find something! Anne Clark, Yankee in Virginia

If you paint the wood could you not just leave all the natural holes to add character? But I do like the way it looks now with the half painted.

I like it painted and stained in the library, but I think I would like it painted all the way around best. I personally wouldn't fill anything and I would use a sprayer because it might get into the crevices more. Better yet, hire someone to do it! Thank you for sharing...I enjoy your dialogue about your ideas for the house. These are similar to conversations I have with myself in my own house, lol. Merry Christmas!🎄🎅

Loved this video and I love you wearing the dress and say about dressing up. That really warms my heart, I've been chided about dressing up, and you know...it's who I am. Now I have a friend in you that feels the same. I'm sorry you are tired, but again it warmed my heart, as someone quite a bit older, I get tired once in awhile to, I think that's God's way of giving us permission to enjoy the day without business and perhaps guilt. I love following your new journey on making this your home. God bless and thanks for sharing.

What is the name of the color and type of paint? I’ve painted wood before but never had great luck with it being durable. Did you add a topcoat of any kind? I have the same cookie cutters only in aluminum from my childhood, also. I agree, what’s up with the “tin man” for a gingerbread man?

Yep me too - calcified tendonitis. Left arm last year and now the right arm this year. Lucky not to have surgery but I feel for you. Best of luck to a wonderful recovery! PS: I love the rough wood contrasting to the painted side.

Where you have christmas books, you could put a fold down desktop...a place to pay bills, write lists etc. Or...add a shelf, then put a lot of small and medium sized framed family photos there.

Hi Linda. I have been watching your channel for some time now but seemed to have missed the accident with you shoulder. Did you take a fall? Amazing how much you have done, I'm sure in pain. Your home is really taking shape and so much going on but will be worth it all. What a great best friend you have with Willow...he is so cute. Loving the videos and the snow since we are in the deep south. xxx

Why fill the holes??? They would be beautiful if painted! Full of character and warmth that only comes from the wonderful age of your home. As a designer myself, we use reclaimed wood in our homes we design to get that effect. Blessings with your new, and well aged old home...💙💛💜

I guess I'm in the minority opinion here. I say paint it! But why sand and fill? I think I would leave the character of the natural knots and holes, etc.
