Would be interesting to know what kind of thermostat and panel were being used when the failure occurred, perhaps you guys could elaborate in another video. Also it's nice to see you come out Kevin, pls do more often.
@thinriches
@thinriches 2 жыл бұрын
I would imagine they don't want to lull you into a false sense of security that your panel won't fail because it's not that one. Truth is, all of them can fail and you should be measuring your temperatures more regularly. Get a laser thermometer and go nuts, but this isn't a product review page.

@@thinriches I get that it's not a prp but they are always kicking out info/knowledge on care for these animals thats backed up by years of hands on experience so why not include more detail on their equipment and setup, after all it was important enough to make a video about and what was done to the snake to help it heal . If other keepers have had the same issue it would be helpful in finding a solution in order to prevent the same thing from happening.

Been working with electronics for the last 12 years. Bottom line......anything that SHOULD NOT happen....WILL eventually happen. Sometimes it's literally a perfect storm of multiple component failure. This is why the best advice is physically LOOK at every animal....every day. At least once. Preferable twice. As an aside....when people ask...."why are your reptiles so expensive?" this is why. You have to hire enough people.

Amazing????? this animal suffered because he housed it improperly and left no space for the animal to actually escape the heat leading to this animal injuring itself. How can some of you people be this blind and ignorant. Everything in this video could have been avoided if proper care was being given in the first place. Not to mention the way he has the panels set up I wouldn’t be shocked if another one in his set up malfunctioned and killed a snake but this is the gruesome injury we get to see because he wants to show us more of his mistakes and give more excuses.

I love snakes & I have snakes & I have mad respect for Kevin and for what he does & what the staff do to, but I’m not a fan over there enclosures at all! They can’t even stretch all the way out, like they are tiny compared to the size of the snake. We always say reptiles need space and good enclosures but I’m not seeing the space or enrichment at all. Snakes move a lot throughout there lives & just sticking them in a blank white enclosure with only paper as a sub for soil & trees & grass & sand ect. I believe we can do better in this day in time! Enrichment & proper enclosures I believe can be much much better than what it’s currently at!

If that’s love to you y’all make me sick. His improper care and pure neglect of this animal lead to it literally suffering and sustaining a very gruesome and potentially life threatening injury because he can’t provide proper husbandry. What would show that he loved these animals is if he slimed down the thousands of animals in that little ass building to like maybe 5,000 or less and better yet here me out what if he got more employees I mean he has like maybe 15 employees taking care of over 10k animals maybe they’re wouldn’t be so many videos like this. At this point it almost feels intentional🤷‍♂️

Glad to see you back Kevin, hope you’re feeling better. Question about when you said that one retic was venting her cloaca, did you mean that it’s a sign that she’s not receptive to the male? My wlp did that when I introduced the male to her enclosure and I was taking it as a sign of her being receptive. Now I think I may have been reading it wrong. I guess it could mean anything and I just have to watch to see what other signs she is communicating. So glad your back, I always learn so much from your videos. 💚

Snarfles wants his daddy! I know firsthand what a faulty thermostat can do. Several years ago, I had a thermostat fail and kill 3 baby Pac Man frogs within 2 hours. I had just fed and sprayed them down, everything was fine. I came back 2 hours later and I could feel the heat coming off the tank from a couple of feet away (yes, it had dividers. I figured I'd put that in there so no one thinks I had them all living together). All of the frogs were completely dried out, along with the soil and moss. The heating pad was burning hot to the touch.

I've been having some trouble with a thermostat in a wine refrigerator lately. They are, unfortunately, likely to fail. I don't have any animals now, but if I get back into it, I'll design a system of redundant thermostats with high temperature and low temperature alarms. It is especially important to keep the temperature from going too high - simply having a second thermostat in the line that would turn off the power and trigger an alarm if the temperature goes a bit higher than the maximum of the primary thermostat would significantly reduce problems like this. Simultaneous failure of two thermostats is a lot less likely than the failure of one. I would also recommend regular testing of the system to make sure the secondary thermostat hasn't silently failed and to make sure the alarm is working. The secondary could be tested easily by adjusting the temperature ranges so that it should turn off rather than the primary. I wonder if somebody has already designed a redundant thermostat and alarm system and put it on the market. I haven't looked for one.

I suppose I figured reptiles heal more slowly than warm blooded animals since their metabolism is so much more mild. Wouldn't have thought that snake could even survive I didn't even wanna click on the video that's amazing. One of the things that keeps me from getting a reptile is I've seen a lot of them go so downhill so quickly in situations that seemed fine. Something that seems inconsequential to us self regulating creatures like the humidity or temperature being a degree or two high or low can take a perfectly healthy snake and put it on death's door with a respiratory infection overnight. We had a ball python when I was little named Sambo most socialized snake I've ever seen. The folks put a lot of money into trying to keep his enclosure just right but he would still always have issues shedding and he got respiratory infections periodically even though everything was kept in the range ball pythons are supposed to prefer. Could just be a congenital thing or something we were missing and just never realized reptile keeping was a little less well defined back then but it's really stressful to have an animal you're attached to be so easily threatened. It was stressful for me and it was my parents who had to fix things and pay the vet bills I can't imagine what it was like for them

How is it, u did that without traumatising her and seriously pissing her off. When ever Jay does it, each and every mom wants to take chunks out of his face. Every single one!!! U did it so gently and I think that she knew u were going to look after her babies. She maybe looked a little sad but that was it. 3. Yeah thermostats can suck sometimes. I know people who double them up on racks that have some of their high end snakes.

I think Brian Barzyck (no I can never spell his last name correct and can't be bothered to check right now) has a blue ball project going on. Trying to make ball python with blue tone.

With so many animals dependent on your constant care & monitoring, it's quite neglectful not to have heat alarms on your thermostat. I only have 4 hognoses & I have alarms & 2 temp probes on each incase 1 fails. Also, why didn't you take it to the vet immediately? I understand you have experience caring for these snakes but you don't have the medical training. There's a huge gap between the 2. Same with the leucistic King Cobra. The issues she had could have been found before death by doing ONE x-ray when her eye first swelled.

I think it's really sort of reassuring to see NERD having equipment malfunctioning and accidents that lead to injuries and showing that it happens and how to improve and move on. I think it's really easy to feel stupid when you're taking care of reptiles because they can be so sensitive to even the smallest changes. One of my geckos has been struggling with the weather recently and even though all the other geckos were doing fine in that enclosure and all the equipment was reading just fine, she developed tail rot. I spent a lot of time feeling dumb, I should've noticed sooner and fixed it, but instead I've been trying to just focus on the things I can do, treating the infection and making sure she sees a vet, adjusting things now that I know she was having trouble, checking in on my other animals and making sure all of my hygrometers/thermometers are still accurate. All of NERDs animals are so lucky to be so loved and taken care of

So lucky ? The last figure I had heard from Rob himself back in 2019 is that they have over 15,000 animals in their care they have two separate facilities and maybe 15 employees. This is what you don’t hear about or see, but cared for ? You clearly can’t even comprehend the fact that this could’ve been completely avoided as if he would have had these animals in properly sized enclosures the snake would have been able to escape the malfunctioning panel and wouldn’t have had to suffer while legitimately being cooked alive. Now really ask yourself do you see yourself possibly caring for 1,000 animals by yourself everyday or heck every week? No because it’s legitimately not realistic a lot of the animals end up spreading illnesses to each other and the vast majority of animals have mites and the week or so before they are shipped to people get their pest strip treatment which if done improperly is very easy to poison the animals they provide this too. Also previously while working here I remember a day where an entire rack of ball pythons had a thermostat malfunction and it killed probably 25 to 40 animals. Mind you in this rack was basically 1,000 gram male ball pythons that were stuffed into 12 quart bins. The bins were so cramped in fact that just trying to open and shut the cages was a semi difficult task considering the snakes covered the entire bin and practically more. Imagine being in a room no wider that your body and being stuffed sideways then having a heat pad under you that supposed to mimic the hottest temperature you should feel to aid in digestion but you can’t ever escape that heat there’s so little room in fact that they can’t even get to the water dish and often times just tip it over and if lucky it’ll be a week to unfortunately a month without water. This is nothing more than a pet mill and should be heavily investigated.
