Grass clogs up the belt and pully mechanism. Poor design, you have to clean it out after every mowing or no workee. Good video.

Good fix , those are MTD made with a craftsman sticker on it. Those just check and add Briggs engines I always wondered about that. They say they run cooler. I have one of them and 2 years old and oil still looks fresh. But I should change it at some point

That was helpful but it showed you pushing it off. But the one I have the wheels lock up when i pull it backward help

There’s also two bolts underneath that hold the cover in place . Usually covered by grass .

The one plastic part on the front cover snapped and now I have to replace the whole thing. The height gage is all messed up now due to it and needs fixed. Is it hard taking off and replacing it?

Jeff I have a similar issue the belt was on but it looks stretched the mower is about 10 yrs old craftsman. As I pull the engine cord to Start by the third pull she locks up. I then removed the cover and all the grass and rotated the belt by hand and then she pulls again. It still won’t start. My question is could a stretch belt cause the lock up.

A customer of mine bought this exact same model by for me to fix it, it had no compression whatsoever and come to find out the Piston Rod was snapped in 3 separate pieces. the disturbing part is his lawn mower was fairly new...

Do you think the cause of failure was oil related? “ never change oil just add”.

Thanks Todd. I tore apart one of the B&S "never change oil" engines with no to little compression. The oil that came out looked like Kerosene. The cylinder walls and piston were heavily soured. I have no doubt that lack of oil changes lead to its early demise. I've also changed oil reeds on some these types B&S engines that were blowing oil into the air cleaner. So always change the oil....lol. Happy wrenching!
