@tc1uscg65Күн бұрын
As a tax payer, you can get into trouble on the water and sure, you can not only touch the helo, but you can get up close and personal with the crew (Just kidding mate). But to answer your question, CG units get visits all the time. They sometimes host weekends where the public is invited to visit the unit. I would reach out to the unit and ask. Whats the worst that can happen (minus the boating incident), they could say no.

Don't forget the H3's. When I was on the Mobile Bay (80-81) they still had (and flew) a Albatross out of Traverse City MI along with the H3's. I was in Hawaii (86-89) when the 65's were just coming on line. LT Colleen A. Cain, the Coast Guard's first female HH-52 helicopter pilot, died in the line of duty when HH-52 CG-1420, on which she was co-pilot, crashed into a mountainside 50 miles east of Honolulu. We used the radio log for that incident from the Air-2-Ground position for training as to how important it is to never take your communications schedule for granted. We even used it in RM/TC "A" school during training. Oh, FWIW, Selfridge Air Nation Guard Base, out side of Detroit has a HH52 at it's museum.

Sorry, but closing down the USCG air station out of LAX (8 years ago now) and moving to Ventura county, was the DUMBEST decision by the USCG in recent years. Now the response times to the LA/Long Beach Harbor area, or from Long Beach to Catalina Island have literally quadrupled since moving far away to Ventura, or should I say basically, “Oxnard” California. I worked air support for the LA Sheriff’s dept and nobody could believe that vacating your old facility out of LAX, was a “good idea.” The LA and Long Beach harbors are far busier and more dense in population in and around that area, than anywhere near Mugu, Oxnard, Camarillo, Ventura harbor and up to Santa Barbara.
@MrSunlander2 күн бұрын
Ventura is hardly LA. Good to have you back in the region, heli-Coasties. Mugu makes sense.
@trackside82793 күн бұрын
Would really like to see AirSta LAX re-opened, much closer to the population center and faster response times to both harbors as well as Santa Monica Bay.I hear the former FedEx hangar is available....
@daviouswey2 күн бұрын
I served in Oregon at a Surf Station, so if my info about Cali is wrong, I apologize... but outside of Santa Monica aren't those other harbors major trading hubs? Wouldn't it make sense to have the Air Station closer to the smaller ports where the weekend boaters launch out of? I bring this up because most of our rescues involved the weekend boaters, not the fishing fleets or the cargo ships.
@dgax652 күн бұрын
I don't know what the official reasoning is, but I'm going to make some assumptions. CGAS Ventura provides greater coverage farther North along the coast, where there are very few SAR assets. CGAS Ventura helicopters can quickly respond from Santa Monica Bay to Vandenburg and out to the northern Channel Islands. CGAS San Diego can provide mutual aid and reach the POLA/POLB in just over an hour. One thing to remember is the significant SAR capability in LA County. LACo Sheriff has 3 Aerospatiale Super Puma SAR helicopters based at Long Beach. Between LASD, LACoFD, LAPD, LAFD, OCSD, OCFA, LBPD and Huntington Beach PD there are 7X S-70 Firehawk, 3X Super Puma, 33X Eurocopter A-350 B, 4X AW-139, 7X Bell-412, 2X Bell 206, 2X Bell UH-1H. Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties probably have the highest concentration of LE/Public Safety helicopters in the country. Most of those helicopters have FLIR/CCTV turrets, and many are close enough to the coast to provide at least basic SAR capability if there is a call for mutual aid. While their primary mission is not necessarily SAR, they can and some have been used in that role. Additionally, there are many lifeguard, fire and police boats at the POLB/POLA and along the coast of the South Bay and Santa Monica Bay. It would be nice to have aviation assets at LA, but the USCG will be retiring the MH-65 Dolphins soon and many of the MH-60T are nearing end of their initial airframe lifespan. They are in the process of doing a service life extension program for existing MH-60T and expanding the fleet. The problem is that the USCG is badly underfunded for all its mission requirements. They have been laying up/retiring cutters and aircraft. They are doing the best they can with what they have and are spread thin.

Why do some air stations use the mh60 and some use the dolphin helicopter
@U.S.CoastGuard2 күн бұрын
Logistics. There are a couple of reasons including cost, operational expense, etc., but one of the simplest is that the Jayhawk can't be stored in the hangers of our older cutters. We are slowly working to phase out the Dolphin as the newer cutters with larger flight decks are completed.

Democrats love to close down bases and stations, I lost my job during BRAC under Clinton, and under Obama this was closed down, in 2016 and when USCG came under DHS its lost its protection of the US guarding our coasts, borders instead USCG is now deployed all over the world instead of right here where they used to be and should be. I am a USN vet and decades of service to the US, nice to see this NAS open I can only hope that the USCG will be split off of DHS and protect our people here. cheers!
@U.S.CoastGuard2 күн бұрын
The Coast Guard receives strong bipartisan support from all coastal states and the Great Lake states. In September 2016, Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles was closed when the lease on the existing facility at Los Angeles International Airport ended. This was LAX's decision, as they decided not to renew the lease. Former Air Station LA merged with and became a satellite unit of Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco with the unit based out of Point Mugu on Naval Airbase Ventura. It was decided later that it would be better for it to be a separate unit, hence the new Coast Guard Air Station Ventura
@wardhill17902 күн бұрын
BRAC was designed and initiated by former President H. W. Bush, a Republican. USCG Air Station Los Angeles closed down in 2016 because the Los Angeles International Airport did not renew the Air Stations’s Lease. It’s amazing how people will blame everything on Democrats hoping that the masses will go with what they are saying. A quick google search and all that is needed. The US Coast Guard was transferred from the Department of Treasury to the newly Created Department of Homeland Security by order of former President George W. Bush in 2002. The United States Coast NEVER STOPPED protecting American’s coast and waterways and have always been deployed all over the world at the same time! The United States Coast Guard is America’s oldest CONTINUOUS Seafaring service in America.
