This is an Avi original, and he did ALL the vocals--from the lead to all the harmonies to the deep, deep bass. He regularly uses instruments in his solo music, but this one just had percussion and a touch of organ at the bridge. Gives me chills, every time!
@wardulenaers3 жыл бұрын
The only instrument they used was a bas guitar on the really low note. Avi stil sings the note but they layered it with a bas guitar to give is some more power. If you listen closely you can hear the vibration of a bass string

He does do the occasional cover but mostly he is a songwriter that shares what is inside his soul with us. More Avi amazingness.... Avi has always been my favorite! I love them all, but my heart belongs to Avi! You have not lived until you stand maybe 15 feet away from him in front of the stage in a small venue and heard him sing this live, with all the passion and the whole room belting it out with him! Avi was special...fyi, he was with Pentatonix for almost 7 years do concerts, tours, etc. He felt the schedule was too intense and his mother was fighting cancer, so he decided to leave for more personal time. He still remains total friends with the group. He's a favorite of many, but every single member of that group has legions of favorites (you do need to do more Pentatonix (there's about 400+ videos). If you want to get "shook", check out Kevin's solos..."Down"...he's the musical genius of the group, They are all FANTASTIC !!!
@theresamarion8234 жыл бұрын
I love all the Pentatonix members but Avi is my favorite, hands down. All of his music is different, no two are the same. Get Down and It Knows Me are two of my favorites, Otherside is great as well.
@larrywt6564 жыл бұрын
I miss Avi in Pentatonix just like everyone else does...but I also feel overjoyed that he was able to free himself from the chains that were binding him to the group. Avi has a passionate soul that was being held back by the rest of the group. His soul is full of self-exploration and emotion that could not be expressed by the more "pop" style that PTX is known for (please note, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that style...it just no longer matched with the music that Avi was feeling inside of him). He needed to break free in order to unleash this passion on the rest of the world. Avi's solo music is breathtaking and magnificent, and I have found a very personal connection to it. While listening to his first album with the Sequoias and his two solo albums, there have been times where I have been convinced that he somehow hacked into my brain, heart and soul, and has been releasing music that tells my own personal story. I have found a kindred spirit in Avriel Benjamin Kaplan!! And honestly, I think this was the best move for both Avi AND the group. Matt has brought a new dynamic to PTX, and I believe he actually fits in perfectly with them...maybe even more so than Avi, as his personal vibe is more in tune with the other group members (for some reason, I kinda thought of Avi as something of an outsider with PTX).
@kathyboucher50192 жыл бұрын
Avi was always my favorite and then he left and I thought it might be the end of PTX, then I listened to the new sound with Matt and I love PTX just as much. All of the members are unique and amazing.

Avi is simply someone special. He is not just an awesome musician but what's most important to me is he delivers emotions with his voice. He sings with passion and there is something special about his tone that makes you believe every word he sings. It's an original song btw and he sang all parts by himself!!! Thx for your reaction. You should check out his live version for "House of the rising sun" or maybe his cover of "Lean on me".

Here's the live version of his cover of "House of the Rising Sun" that I like best, as it really showcases the keyboard coolness of Daniel Ellsworth, as well as the audience singing along. This was the August 24, 2019 Dallas show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpzCfptqiNyYjrM

I'm with you. Avi's my own favorite in PTX, so I wasn't horrified when he left, since we'd already heard the first of his solo music (on the EP "Sage & Stone" under the name Avriel & The Sequoias (Avriel being his real first name) that he recorded before leaving PTX), and it freed his own musical soul. Everything on his "I'll Get By" EP released in 2019 is also great. You can't lose, no matter which of his songs you react to. Many, however, do not have videos, but who cares, lol? As for "Change", he's said that it's his favorite song to perform in concert, because everyone in the audience sings along, which is so satisfying for him. Just to show you what he means, here's the video I shot at his July12, 2019 show in San Francisco (my home town). kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4fRi4uQjracm5Y

🤗 just little info. It's actually Fields and Pier and Sage and Stone that he wrote in college. Then that whole first EP (Sage and Stone) was put together while he was with PTX and released after he left. His next 2 EP's ( I'll Get By and Lean on Me) were written and produced after he left (including the song Change On The Rise) and he is currently writing a full length album. I only mention this because he has recently talked about all this in his livestreams and interviews.🤗

Could you react to I'll get by, from Avi. It's about living with anxiety. It's beautiful and I think you will really enjoy it. Avi is a beautiful creative soul, at first I was devastated he left Pentatonix, he was my favorite, but now I see what he is able to create, and he seems to be happier, at his own pace. Also, Pentatonix continues strong, which was a fear of mine. We didn't lose Pentatonix, we gained solo Avi Kaplan.

Hi from Australia, Avi is also my fav from PTX so much so I can't watch the new PTX ...so happy to watch your journey through the early 6 years of PTX with Avi though. lol This was his first 'major' solo in which he had spent a year or so on working on his mental health issues. This was definitely his push to his own 'Change on the Rise' All vocals are his voice 'layered' he did say he used an organ in some parts but apart from the clapping it's 'all' Avi. listen especially to when he sings "We're going strong" that booming sound is his whole heart and soul...

Like many others, I was heartbroken when Avi left PTX, but I did understand why. And in the end, I'm grateful that he did because he's so much happier which allows him to provide us with so much amazing music! As I understand it, he took the first year to just travel and renew himself spiritually. He wrestled with depression and much of this album is about that struggle. I see this one as a recognition of that, that his flame had gone cold, but he was declaring war on it. The other songs follow his progression through the battle and out the other side.
@Lookinforrealmusic4 жыл бұрын
Love all of Avi's original solo music .The music from his I'll Get By EP is dark, powerful, drum heavy and layered with his wonderful voice. It Knows Me hits you with all the regrets you ever had in your life. Full Moon sounds to me like the first night of the most intense love of your life. Otherside is the peace and regret and hope after battle. I could go on and on about how much I appreciate his musicianship and how each song he does is straight up about something real in the human condition. I hope you do react to more of his work. Every single thing he has released is on at least one of my playlists.

If I was forced to pick between the two (Pentatonix or Avi Kaplan (& The Sequoias)) I would pick Avi, hands down. The reason is that he is making "Americana" folk type of music (quite a bit of it original rather than covers), and that is straight-up my favorite genre. Pentatonix is Pop-centric, which is great and they are astounding in their song choices/arrangements. I am just very glad I am not forced to choose.

Anton Chekhov said the role of the artist is to ask questions not answer them. I think this is exactly what Avi is doing in this video. It can be interpreted at so many levels. Somebody commented that he sings with emotions and I can feel all of them also his tone really speaks to her. This song goes straight to my soul which is the greatest compliment you can give an artist. Art is meant to feed the soul because, at least for me, I did not know my soul was so hungry for this. On a much lighter note, much much lighter note when they are marching with the torches it reminded me of the scene from Young Frankenstein. Somebody mentioned the song is about his struggle with the depression and fighting to get his passion back. Well I am bipolar. I completely understand depression since I have bipolar depression. But the manic side of me will cause my brain to go into completely other directions that make absolutely no sense and that's what happened with the comment about Young Frankenstein. I'm so glad he's doing well. It is an awful thing to have to battle your own mind everyday. Another sweet reaction. I could listen to the song over and over and I will.
