About 6 years ago I replaced my 24K BTU HVAC with 4 cheap window AC units from walmart. I installed 18K, 12K, 8K ,8K BTU units in my 1,700 sq ft house. Yeah, major overkill. However, with them all running at the same time they only run maybe 1hr twice a day. My house gets cold quick. Not surprisingly my electric bill went significantly down since the previous HVAC was running most of the day.. In my case, multiple window units are cheaper to operate than a big HVAC central system.

@@NewHVACGuide Living in middle Tenn I use a combination of infrared heaters, electric blankets and kerosene . My electric (heating) bill in winter is more than it is in summer.

I have 3 IR heaters (not radiant) main room: huge wall mount with blue led eye candy, bedroom: small fake fireplace, bathroom: small counter top. all use 1300 watts. During the 8ft snow/ice storm last January they ran 24-7 for 1 week.house stayed 72F. Electric bill went from $72 to $118. We have TVA electric.

The public is tired of CONSTANTLY changing HVAC systems/refrigerants…in the name of environmental concerns. It really is because patents change every 10 years. Plus the amount of refrigerants leaking every hour from cars, office buildings and homes is enormous. Here is the quick solution…Geothermal, smaller homes and no office buildings (work at home online if possible) would lower the human footprint on the environment immediately. However the greedy corporate capitalists need their office rent money and all related profit centers. The quick answer (because we cannot beat these scumbag greedy capitalists) is ONLY purchase R32 units (I.e. Goodman, Daikin,etc), The rest of the world uses R32 with no patents so it is less expensive all around. Let “corporate greed” keep their expensive B.S. scam new equipment and new (flammable) refrigerant. People must fight against these corporate greedy scumbags. 👍

I picked up a new R22 2Ton compressor for $200 bucks and am building a ground source water to water heat pump to warm my radiant floor when my solar hot water can’t keep up on cloudy days I will be using R290 (propane) it will be a monoblock design located outside

Not one word about the "new" efficiency. My R22 system is still pumping out cool air. Late model Carrier air handler. Really old compressor.

Run it till it Quits. r-22 does not wear out or gets to old. It leaks out. if the system is tight an not leaking every thing else can be brought on line if you can do it your self. Serval thousands dollars of cost for a new system you would have to overcome before seeing savings. Just a retire old fart who rather watch sap come out of a pine tree than work on AC.🙂

holding out till 410 is super cheap for closeouts for my rental property. Did that in 2012 for a Trane XB13 and running perfect in AZ 12 years latter, hope to time it right for next swap in about 3 years.

Thanks for the video! I have a small leak in one of my units that the HVAC tech could not trace with a sniffer. This is the second time in 18 months this has happened. Currently going through the trade-offs of getting another tech out for an ultrasonic leak detection for a possible repair, or shot-gunning the whole condenser unit or even the the entire system with a higher SEER (and properly sized) system. And now there's the possibility of waiting on new units with new refrigerant! Question. How is it that 19 months before a ban on R-410 equipment there isn't yet R-32 equipment on the market?

Just bought a new York HMH7 and coil last year. To convert to R32, would that entail totally new equipment or could the units-- any unit for that matter-- be flushed and filled with the new stuff? Inverter system. Coils just allow the refrigerant to flow through, correct? Just thinking ahead. I do have 10 years parts and labor. Good video as always.

I am in a real dilemma, my 24 yr old AC unit stopped. I have a two story condo but the reviews in my area are so bad it makes me hesitate. It's so hot this summer in Southern California. So I purchase two AC units costing $500 ea different brands. They didn't really do anything for upstairs bedroom facing west. I am sleeping downstairs which is not that cool but better than upstairs. I am don't mind paying the high price if it works and I can count on the company to do install correctly. When a new unit is installed do they clean out the vents? and should I expect them to remove the old unit? Do they install heating & A/C at the same time? Appreciate any insight. Thank you.

Everyone should wait for the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA) program as it is big money, that is taking forever to be implemented. HEEHRA is a voluntary program that covers 100 percent of electrification project costs (up to $14,000) for low-income households and 50 percent of costs (up to $14,000) for moderate-income households.

i saw the inverter heat pump vids and have a question. What is the difference between a "variable speed heat pump" by trane/lennox etc versus an "inverter heat pump" by bosch/daikin? assume all are 20-22 seer communicating systems for apples comparison.

I just paid $630 CAD to have a company come out and add 1.5 lbs of R-22 to my 18 year old Trane system. They quoted me $9500 CAD for a new 3.5 ton A/C only system. The mechanic had to phone the shop to see if they even had any R-22, I hear they are gouging for the reclaimed refrigerant as new stock is banned. Yeah I know that they saw me coming, but at 35 degrees C it hurt a little less.

@@robnelson6545 I think the "standard procedure" is to start checking of it leaks down again. My buddy was saying that the more common leak source is the valve connections and then the A evaporator. Compressor seal leaks are very rare to leak in his 40 years of service opinion.

@@eastpark4864 In Canada it is hard to find anything other than small 8 oz. cans of Red Tek R-22a. It is illegal to import any or manufacture any new R-22. Thanks for your comment

I just had an online Pioneer rep tell me that 410a will still be readily available for "25 years." I pushed and finally he said they will have no R32 units in the US for 6 months. HE had said they have 454b units, but when pushed he couldn't list any of those units that are supposedly available now! I need probably two inverter+ mini split heat pumps now. Do I need to (1) check with other US companies for heat pumps that are R32 (or non-410a), or (2) buy R32 units from Europe or Asia, or (3) Is the Pioneer rep correct and 410a will be fine for 25 yrs??? If there are R32 heat pumps available in the US now that is probably my best choice. I just don't know who has them.

Want to lower your heating and air conditioning bills. Blower door testing and air sealing are under appreciated tools for improving comfort and reducing heating and AC bills. When looking to save money on utilities always start with adding insulation and sealing air leaks before tackling the HVAC system. Electric heat pumps are the future.

I'm concerned about the 410a phase out, which will be a ban on Jan 1 2025 I believe. Im in the market NOW for 2 mini split heat pumps. I pretty much decided on 2 that had the features and price I liked… Frontier Diamonte with inverter, 9k and 12k btu's. However, then I read about the phase out of 410a. Some online are saying its a big deal, that 410a will be hard to find and very expensive, while others including local HVAC techs and an online Frontier representative say it won't make much difference for 25 yrs! I've seen a few (very few) R32 units online (Daikin I think was a leader in R32 in US) but they cost way more than the Diamonte's I was so interested in. All else equal I'd definitely go with the R32, but do you think it will make much difference? I probably need two separate units and hope to find them for under $1200.00 each! i expect there will be many options in R32 very soon, so I am hesitant to buy right now even though I am in real need of new units.

I was told by a technician that is gonna be very expensive to switch the unit because you’re gonna need new piping and new electrical work so he said that he was going to buy a older unit before they phase out and have a leaves another 15 to 25 year and give the problem to somebody else once he retires

The new equipment I cost more but what he is saying is incorrect. You'll still be able to use the same linesets and electrical in most cases.

new tech is not always better. For instance refrigerators and freezers lasted 30 40 50 years now last 5 years is that really better for the environment? Yes I remember those great refrigerators that had a butter warmer and clicked off every 12 hours for a defrost cycle and th entire exterior had heaters to prevent condensation. Electricity was so cheap back then. Those would use $100 a month in electricity now just like the $15,000 - $20,000 Sub Zero of today. They are exempt from the regulations because they’re “commercial.” Of course no profit making food service establishment would ever have one. Our regulations are very screwed up unfortunately but most consumers could not afford the power to operate those appliances. The most frustrating thing is the dishwashers taking sometimes 3 hours for a cycle. The old ones took 45 minutes and used 12 - 14 gallons of 140ºF - 160º hot water that was specified on the box of Cascade.

When are the co going to go to more natural refrigerants like propane and CO2 ??? Seems they are dragging their feet ... Make ALL refrigerant use be outside of the building shell... All units sealed and ready to install with no refrigerants added on site... Sealed units similar to a refigerator or window a/c unit... Many of the "NEW" refrigerants are blends of old components...

Am concern about the impact flammable A2L refrigerants may have on homeowners insurance, as if there's not enough hazards here in the US driving up the cost. These flammables may give insurers an excuse to raise rates no matter how mild of a hazard they may be. Because of that other questions, am seriously considering replacing my 18-year-old r-22 with a new 410a system before the new year.

With the added costs of home ownership going through the roof; (property taxes, insurance, utilities, general maintenance) you will that home owners will not be able to afford these new systems. Mark my words you will see nice houses with window units poking out. One again renters will get screwed; because landlords cannot or will not absorb the added expense.

Think long term savings. Buying the cheapest product now may not be the best for your long term financial savings. New equipment and technology comes with lower operating and maintenance costs which will save you money in the long term.

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity. the future is electric. Wind and solar energy along with electric vehicles are the future. Stop using fossil fuels. There is a climate crisis.
