I used to work at a National Laboratory as an HVAC Supervisor. . We had Daikin mini splits with solenoid drop liquid lines. We had alot of problems with them, but they were all related to a very poor installation. I was always defending Daikin when others were trashing them for the failures. This was in the 80z when Daikin left the American market. This was a great lesson for me about how u can get blamed for someone else's mistakes. A funny story sorta related. We had a union pipe fitter company install a Daiken. Then asked us to start it up. When we got there months after install the unit was running with the service valves closed. I quickly opened the service valves and the sucker started cooling like a mad dog. Years later it was still working.

Thanks for recommending surge filters, both HVAC and whole house. I use the HVAC one you recommend and like it. It's especially helpful for those with dual heat pumps. The surge as one starts up can damage the other. My sister had that problem. Those who live in high-lightning regions of the country might want to go with the beast of whole house protectors, the Siemens FS140. With a 140kA rating can shrug off strokes that would take out those with a less rating.

Thoughts on sealing up all the small bypasses that allow air to go around the filter? I have noticed dust building up in those areas in the return frames, I sealed them up as best I could and even taped around the edges of each filter to the return frame so as to get as much of the air through the filter instead of around it. I have noticed they need to be changed more frequently, so maybe I am keeping the ductwork/evaporator a bit cleaner!

What would you stock as a homeowner do it yourselfer in case of emergencies? Bought a house with a twenty year old Carrier standard efficiency furnace and it’s below zero now.

Lots of folks out there require full time HVAC annually and then there are those who only need HVAC for maybe 4 to 6 months per year. That plays a roll in how the owner makes their decision in operating cost for the next say 20 years. The more HVAC is used, it seems to make much sense in spending the extra buck to get HVAC systems that are able to squeeze out lean BTU's vs. a single stage HVAC or "contractor" models that satisfy the initital install budget yet will drive the owner into the poor house to operate the system. Also, gas and electric rates play a huge roll in which system tier would make sense. for example, in CA, the electric rates are currently about 45 cents per kWh and natural gas are about $2 per therm or CuFt. In their case, it might make a lot of sense to step up to higher efficiency just to have reasonable energy bills. Then there is the comfort idea with the more expensive units that will move the air in a more controlled manner vs. 100% on then 100% off. Some residences are built differently and would benefit from that kind of system such as multiple level homes or homes with a lot of glass etc. You would think that the states or federal laws would require the builders to do detailed heat gains/losses and apply those to the different systems out there to reach a common goal vs. cold and hot cycles. What's more, if anything is a waste of energy, its a two story home. Those should be limited...they waste more energy than any single level home will. BTW, the air quality inside a home only needs to match the air quality outside or ambient. Anything more than that is a waste.

I can now tell you how well my Daikin MXL series system worked at -15 C. The downstairs was down to 18 C while the upstairs held at 21 C. The downstairs was set for 22 C, and upstairs was set for 21. The upstairs is fully insulated, while the downstairs isn't. The floor is cold, as it is an uninsulated crawl space.

We bought a new system back in April the new daikon fit and we use the filtrate 1085 filter. I change it once a month. Any suggestions for using the filtrate filter? What number would I be ideal for my system? Thanks for the video. I learned a lot.

Hi, I've been searching You tube content for A/C and you definitely stood out, so I feel confident in asking you a question. I have own 2 Goodman A/C units and I have had this issue with both of my units. They produce this white crystal like stuff on the outside unit in the aluminum part that eats them up and they stop working. My installer said that the 1st unit was all ready out of warranty (even though it was like 3 years old) and now yesterday I noticed that the new unit is doing the same thing again and he claims there is no warranty because he had to haggle with the vendor to get me a big discount on the new outside unit replacement. Is this product issue (Crystal's) a typical thing with the Goodman product? I'm afraid that this summer already my unit is going to break and is not even a year old.

I’ve never heard of that. And the warranty should definitely be still good after three years. You can check your own Warranty on our website. www.newhvacguide.com/check-warranty

I was wondering if u would consider a vid on thermal barriers. Specifically thermal sheeting
@NewHVACGuide

I’ll add it to the list. I’ve got more home envelope vids in the works

I second that request. Thermal sheeting, also called attic foil, is excellent at reflecting back the radiant heat in an attic. On a hot day the surface of my attic's cellulose insulation is ten degrees cooler than the surface of the attic foil lying directly on top of it. It is also easy to install.

Would you change to a daikin fit if you have a new 2 stage traditional ac ruud system? Both systems are the same seer rating.

Eventually yes. But I’d get as much life out of any system as possible

You forgot to specify MERV rating. Pleated allows more airflow than standard filters. Also coatings on filters are way overpriced, I will agree.

People be playing around too much with multiple thousand dollar equipment. I use pleated Merv8 filters and change them out once every 2 months. None of that crazy merv 13 or whatever filter. No chance of suffocating the furnace. Air filtration is for the actual air filters with HEPA filters on them.

Most people don't get it. Those micro and hepa filters plug very easily causing your AC to work ridiculously hard shortening it's life. If you are blowing fuses it's a good indicator.
