well actually bi han killed scorpion when he was a human (Hanzo), when they were at the temple of the elements and he stole shinnoks amulet (quan chi hired both scorpion and sub zero to retrieve the amulet knowing they were going to meet each other and eventually fight, he also knew sub zero was stronger and he was going to kill him, he took advantage of this and turned scorpion into a spectre cause as scorpion he was able to handle hellfire) so everything went full circle when scorpion killed him in the first tournament

Also, the story isn't really the selling point of Mortal Kombat. It's more about the extremely bloody and gory violence in the games. Also, it seems like they always manage to put a Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero fight in the stories of every MK game. The circumstances were different each time, but there always managed to be at least one Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero fight in all the games that had a story mode. Mortal Kombat/ MK 9: They fought twice. First one, Scorpion killed Bi Han. Second one, Sub-Zero got retaliation, but was stopped by the Lin Kuei before he could finish Scorpion. Mortal Kombat X: They fought at the Lin Kuei Temple when Scorpion thought Sub-Zero was trying to kill him. Mortal Kombat 11: They fought when Sub-Zero thought Scorpion from the past was still evil and working for Kronika. I think the fact it's Scorpion and Sub-Zero is why the rivalry is so popular, though. I mean, you talk two of the most opposite types of elements: Fire vs. Ice. They're easily the strongest ninjas in the MK games. They've also been rivals since the very first game.

He regained his soul almost right after automation, when he engaged Kabal in kombat, and helped the Earthrealm Warriors. He was later killed by Sindel, with his soul afterwards being one of the many claimed by Quan Chi, who later restored him to his human form after deeming technology unreliable.
