When you forget that the track gauge is the same on IRT, IND, and BMT lines.... Just the width of the cab!😂 I noticed how this new locomotive effortlessly navigated a line from each of the old competing companies. Note the miniscule gap between cab and platform at the Zerega Avenue Station (1:05). But the noticeable gap at Bedford Park Blvd Station (4:55). Ah, remnants of the pre-unified subway system...❤

They are technically the same throughout the US

Track gauges are same throughout the system but IRT (A-Division, number trains) is narrower than IND/BMT (B-Division, letter trains) . All NYCT work trains are built to IRT clearances so they can navigate the entire system. One will obviously note more platform gap when work train is passing IND/BMT stations

Nice catch, thanks for sharing. I notice that the in service version has 3rd rail pickup, so I guess it is actually Tri-Power? The Wabtec videos did not show the shoes.

255s are Hybrid Locomotives, they have battery which can last up to 9-hours which can limit diesel emissions in underground work zones. The battery can be charged from the engine or third rail.

Because the entire purpose of these machines is to operate in areas where the third rail is shut down, or not there at all. The battery takes over in the work area to keep the air clear.

They can be operated in almost ANY kind of configuration. Married-pairs, Single units (as designed), of course.

@@sirizalot I think he means DUAL MODE. I think these locos have to operate even if the 3rd rail is not usable. If you want to go that route, you'd have to make the locos "tri-mode"-diesel, battery, 3rd rail.

It's a Diesel to Electric Engine like the NJ transit ALP45. another Hybrid Electric Engine were it can switch from Diesel to Electric, and Electric to Diesel.
