This burnt out angsty romance author with an English Lit degree is addicted to your recs. I was DNF’ing one book after another, bored and disappointed. I thought, “Surely there is someone with a high bar like me who can tell me what to read.” Then I remembered your witty TikToks and looked you up. I love this long form. I saw your vid extolling the virtues of Act Your Age, Eve Brown. It absolutely delivered. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Whenever you decide to pick up a classic again i HIGHLY recommend starting with Jane Eyre. The English used isn't super old timey / hard to understand. It's the perfect fall or winter read, and the romance is the roadmap for so many modern romance books, the quotes in there are *chefs kiss* Also as a super easy and vibey classic series I recommend the Anne of Green Gables series (in particular the first 3, it's an 8 or 9 book series.) Most people know the basic plot of the first book, but it 's so heartwarming and feel good and nostalgic, and the descriptive scenes of nature are top tier! The third book follows Anne when she goes to university with her besties and it's just so much fun to read.

I totally agree! I loved Jane Eyre when I first read it, and now it's one of my favorite books by one of the Bronte sisters. Another great quick read by Anne Bronte is Agnes Grey. The language used in their books isn't too old timey (at least to me, lol) and it has a very compelling plot. :D

Ma’am I was sat, posted up, pencil and paper in hand, waiting for the recs and when I heard “Bear and the Nightingale” mentioned, my ears perked up. I have a whole shelf dedicated to that series; love her, we stan. You might say your recommendation was too spot on with Sorcery of Thorns, though, because that too is another “designated shelf” book with its own place of honor in this house. As someone who does enjoy reading the odd literary book: Jane Austen. Her stories are much more accessible than most other classic English lit books, and I think you would especially like Pride & Prejudice. Frankenstein is less accessible, but very short, so that's another good intro. Dracula is a collection of letters and telegrams and I found it relatively simple reading.

On thrillers with romance subplots, Ellie Marney (who wrote None Shall Sleep) also wrote The Killing Code, which is a YA sapphic mystery/thriller set during WW2 about a group of women who work as code breakers, and are tracking down a serial killer who is killing other government girls. It is severely underrated, and so good, I think about it regularly.

I think the best ‘classic’ I’ve ever read is The Secret History, it’s a more recent classic that I think is very interesting, it’s a long book but all of it feels necessary, like once you get to the middle you feel like it’s slow and useless and then you get to the end and you feel like the middle was really needed, also I don’t go a day without thinking about the death of a certain character. The characters are also deranged, like the choices they make are just insane sometimes, which I loved

12:26 Okay, this prompt.... , not a book, but a fictional supernatural horror podcast. The magnus archives, specifically season 4, fit this so well, aswell as the short form stories based around the 12 fears and the plot being strung along outside of the stories read by the main character, Jonathan sim. This prompt goes especially well with season 4 specifically with... funnily enough, the character as my pfp, my drawing of Martin Blackwood. The fog is tied to the fear of "the lonely: in it, and features many doomed characters! Including a bunch of casual queer rep that isn't too in your face like a coming out story if that type of lgbtq media isn't our thing. I very much recomend it.

I think the closest thing to the female American psycho would be A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. Everything that Boy Parts did, A Certain Hunger did it 10x better.

For a paranormal book with a hint of romance, I would recommend Ritual by Mo Haydar The romance is a sub-sub plot like really don’t get your hopes up but it’s truly an amazing book. Thriller, horror, graphic, dark magic that links to real cultures in our world and events that are probably adapted from real life as well.
