The only important detail here is that people need to defund the BBC by boycotting the licence. Period.

Around the time a TV licence was first required to watch BBC iPlayer, I remember reading a discussion about watching BBC News and other news channels live online. Apparently, it's our Human Right to be able to watch any news channel without a TV licence. But at the time, no had ever tried it. So at the moment, you need a TV licence to watch live news channels. But if someone told the TV licence people they were only watching news channels live, and the TV licence people decided to prosecute, a court COULD rule that people don't need a TV licence to watch the news live.

Here's my Q: How does the BBC ( License ) over any other company IE: Amazon/Netflix/Ch4 etc etc, as it's my understanding they're not OWNED by the BBC or is it they 'OWN' those airwaves IE: transmission frequencies, because if they don't then licensing on them is Fraudulent at best! It's no different than explaining why, If a Investigator comes to your home, if you have the capacity to 'receive' a 'live' broadcast, they'll 'attempt' to get you to turn on the 'channel' on you're device and, Bingo, they've got you by the short and curlies!!!!! Isn't it about time people investigated this Odd phenomena of 'apparently' owning EVERY frequency and I would say this could generate Serious Court cases across hundreds of platforms such as various Channel companies after all, there's NO licensing in America or, other Countries so why UK????

They don't have a monopoly over the Streaming services like Netflix or Amazon but do appear to have power over the other Broadcast channels like Ch4, Ch5, ITV, SKY etc. via Ofcom, the so called 'independent' UK communications regulator, that controls broadcast licences for those channels and punishes them (apart from the bbc) when they step out of line (a line which is moved as and when the bbc tells them to move it). There are many other countries with forms of TV licencing, some countries have removed it and added it to general taxation, a few scrapped it completely (yeh! those few) and others are very similar to the UK.

@@MYBIGKINDHEART - Well yes at least in France. The BBC and all other live TV broadcasts can be watched for free now (via satellite) because the French TV Licence was withdrawn by Macron two years ago. It was taken every year with the annual taxes (like poll tax) and cost around 150 Euros but to be fair, the French government always sent a form in the previous spring asking if a Licence would actually be needed - plus the elderly were free.

Years ago (probably somewhere in the early 2010s) I remember reading something along these same lines that receiving the news was a right rather than something that required a licence - it wasn't the site you're reading - no idea where it was though. At the time, I thought it sounded a bit silly because people could just listen to the radio if they wanted news. The main problem with that same advice nowadays is that "news" programs are actually entertainment programmes, not news and are thus definitely covered by TVL rules! I'm thinking I might've seen this gem on the TPUC forum. It definitely had a TV licencing section. Anyone remember that gem? It was full of a mix of useful stuff and a bunch of nonsense!

@@rog3833 Actually it is. Under the law, 'any device' that can recieve live broadcasts counts as licensable. The law is worded as such to allow for technologies not yet invented too. Current technology it includes are TVs, laptops, PCs and smartphones to name a few. Legally it's also your duty to 'help' them in the investigation if you let them in because of the warrant (e.g. turn the TV on to show shows). Although in practice, this law is rarely applied.

This is the worst article about tv licensing advice I have seen. Some people who aren't familiar with the rules could get into trouble if they read this. My only worry about the inevitable defunding of the BBC is looking st the history of what has become of other public funded organisations going to private hands. Look at the Gas and Electricity companies for example. Most water companies are useless. Public transport? It costs more to train to London than it costs to hire a car and drive there. Congestion charges and all. No doubt the Conservatives will retain the legal requirements for what eill be called a BBC subscription.

@@Thurgosh_OG If you have a licence, you can plug into the mains on a vehicle like a train, boat or bus. This is from TVL: However, if you’re away from home and plug one of these devices into the mains and use it to watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service, or to use BBC iPlayer*, you need to be covered by a separate TV Licence at that address (unless you’re in a vehicle or vessel like a train, car or boat).

Think of broadcast television as a format like DVD or VHS and the BBC own right exclusive UK rights to VHS. If you choose to watch content the BBC do not own, on a format the BBC do not own, like streaming, then no amount of royal charters can change the fact that the only part of the internet the BBC have any dominion over are there own websites and that TV Licencing are are lying when they say people need a licence to watch someone else's live streamed content via the internet, which the BBC do not own.
