Mary could sing, I heard both her and Diana live, and Mary was more of an impressive and stronger singer than Diana, and in person more beautiful. The problem is unlike Diana, she didn't have an entire company behind her to groom her and put money behind her like they did Diana, who is just an average singer at best!
@HaliB758 күн бұрын
@ Diana’s secret was she had better TECHNICAL skills vocally. She knew how to approach a lyric and execute with her tiny sound. She/Berry developed her “vocal styling.” Vocal coaching early on helps tremendously. It’s not that her voice was so amazing.

Mary’s voice was underrated and under used. If you watch KZbin videos of her singing LIVE in the 80’s she was surprisingly fantastic. She grew more confident.

I totally agree. Mary started out as a wonderful lead singer, but she was not supported by Motown after Diana became the signature Supremes voice. Mary absolutely shines on some of the Supremes' early 60s recordings, namely The Tears, Baby Don't Go, and Pretty Baby.

Mary also sang a beautiful lead on OUR DAY WILL COME which was supposed to be released on the I HEAR A SYMPHONY album but was cut at the last minute.
@Tes70008 күн бұрын
I think Mary's best leads were on some of the Supremes very early songs -- The Tears, Baby Don't Go, and Pretty Baby. Mary truly shines brightly on all three. However, Diana's light and soft soprano came to define The Supremes' sound, and as time went on, Mary tended to try to match that. As such, Mary's leads often sounded like she was still singing background.

Like Flo and Jean, Scherrie was no punk and didn’t back down in anything she stood for. I met her at my job Homegoods in Woodland Hills, Ca. She was a cool lady. I believe she had the voice out of all the Supremes included Diana. Sadly Berry was gone through with the group and never looked back, leaving poor Mary to fend for the group all by herself..

I love Scherrie. Thank God Pedro didn’t lay a hand on her, Scherrie would have reunited Holland/Dozier/Holland and all four of them would have beat Pedro’s ass 😂

Mary is a better singer than Scherrie is. I'm glad she stepped up. However.. Scherrie does sound great on those upbeat, disco oriented songs, those work well for her. Mary's singing conveys sensuality, tenderness, vulnerability, sadness, nuance, warmth... all qualities that Scherrie lacks. Mary sings a song, and it becomes a deep emotional expression, while Scherrie treats every song like a calisthenic exercise. You just FEEL Mary was singing about Tom Jones on "Where Is It I Belong":

Diana Ross's voice really came to define the Supremes and unlike their die hard fans, the general public never stopped looking for that voice, so they never took to Jean and Scherrie, even though both are incredible singers. IMO, the success they had in the early 70's (Up the Ladder, Stone Love, Everybodys got the right to love) was because Jean sounded like Diana on those records, and people connected with that. But when Jean started leaning into her voice, and especially when they started swapping leads, there was no singular identity that the public could latch onto and it turned them off. Then when you add lack of promotion, personnel changes and uneven material... Sorry, I'm not beating up on them- I'm a huge fan of the 70s Supremes. They didn't have the steady hits, but they were more souldful than DR&TS could ever have been. But as the book shows, there were issues...

Mary is a background singer. I don't believe she is a soloist.
@Tes70008 күн бұрын
Listen to The Tears, Baby Don't Go, or Pretty Baby if you want to hear Mary's true potential as a soloist. Mary sang lead on all of these songs very early in the Supremes recording career, years before Where Did Our Love Go. The problem for Mary was that Diana became the Supremes' standard, and as time went on, Mary didn't sing her true voice. She either tended to sing her leads as a background singer or too soft to match Diana's cadence, but Mary absolutely had the pipes to sing lead.

I honestly think that Mary would have been great in a Broadway play or in movies. Only because she would have been the unexpected one. At this point holding on to being a supreme is holding her back or I'm trying to be or do something greater than what she could have done if she had pushed herself
@jakimsingletary1648 күн бұрын
Her and Flo needed good role models to guide them throughout the music industry. Berry played a huge role in playing them in saying he got their back. But instead he was so caught in making everything about Diana in making her a huge star more than everyone else. Flo would have been good in “ Singing Opera” and “Gospel Plays”. Mary could have been good in “Jazz Clubs” or “Broadway play”..
@ealanmontgomery23044 күн бұрын
She had such a vivacious personality, she would have been fantastic onstage or in movies. People criticize Diana Ross for leaving the group, but Mary stayed for too long and it dragged her down like an anchor.
