headlines should read: local people upset about tourism dollars
@tiamarrow6366

Here’s the issue….while Amityvillw does attract tourists which means more money for the town, you’re forgetting that actual people still live in the area and specifically in the direct area of the house. Those people probably get tired of tourists taking up parking spaces, and taking unnecessary pictures of a house that isn’t actually haunted.

@@chayo4537sweetie you do realize that crime happens in every city in America right? Crime isn’t specific solely NY and here in NY has actually gone down in recent years (compared to the 60’s-90’s), and you probably aren’t smart enough to realize that the news and media like to hype up the news of the “violence” because that’s what attracts more attention and views. As a native NYer, trust me it’s not everyday that a stabbing or shooting happens and it doesn’t happen every single minute. Yes crime does in fact still happen but not as often as you’d think. Also, this is Long Island not Manhattan/The Bronx/Brooklyn/Queens/Staten. If you actually try educating yourself and look at a map of NY: you’d see that there’s 5 boroughs (Manhattan included) upstate NY (going towards Canada) and Long Island, at the edge of NY.

Any residents annoyed by all the tourists might as well move away, because decades from now people are still going to be fascinated by that story. The Amityville city council should buy both the house at 112 Ocean Avenue, as well as the properties that border it, and just sell tickets for guided tours of the place. They'd make a fortune.

@@gallery7596 The DeFeo murders were a tragedy and the Lutz hoax was a shameful embarrassment. Why would anyone with an ounce of decency want to exploit either of those things for profit. The town is not proud of what’s made it so famous, or infamous.
@gallery7596
@gallery7596 24 күн бұрын
@@danwilson9530 It's hardly unprecedented. Look at the Lizzie Borden case. Those murders happened in 1892, and that house is actually a bed and breakfast now. Might as well say the British government is indecent for allowing people to tour the Black Tower of London where torture was routinely practiced. Tragic or shameful, it's still history, dan.

I’ve driven by it many times. It’s indeed in a neighborhood, and a beautiful one at that. It’s a lovely property. Nothing creepy about it. Sadly just a tragic past that some opportunists who got financially in over their heads took advantage of. The back of the narrow property is along the Amityville River, so there’s aa freestanding boat house back there. It’s not on a big piece of land.

@@Dynomite611 I was fascinated with the book as a kid, which is interesting considering I’m not into reading, but I read that one over several times. Scared the he!! out of me actually. It was a place on my bucket list to see one day. During my first visit to NYC I took a drive to Amityville. I stopped at the intersection that gives you a practically direct view of the house. It’s gorgeous, as is the neighborhood. It was lovingly decorated for Xmas, well lit like an upscale property. 100% charming, 0% off putting, or creepy or anything negative. Instantly got over my fear of that place/story. Several years later I had been in the area on a Sat when on the way back to Jersey I learned on 1010 WINS that the now last owners held a huge yard/moving sale that day, allowing public access into the house AND I MISSED IT! I was so bummed.

I wouldn't mind living there. It's a beautiful home. Yes, a tragedy happened there but the house was never haunted. That story was dreamed up by DeFeo's lawyer and the Lutz family in order to try and get Defeo off on an insanity defense. At least three families have lived there since the Lutz's and have never had any problems.

Reminds me of the recent Fall City murders of the Humiston family. Eldest son went for the entire family, tried to frame the next oldest. Here, he blamed his sister 18 year old sister and said he only killed her, no one else. There, he blamed his 13 year old brother, even placing the gun in his hand. Either way, young kids and teenagers were very brutally murdered in their own home along with their parents by someone they should’ve been able to trust their whole lives. Let’s not forget that. Beyond the news coverage, the speculation and the movies, this was a real family betrayed and killed by an enemy within.

Nothing wrong with the house. Just curious people. I’ve driven by it going down Ocean Ave a number of times over the years. The street is too narrow to stop, get out and gawk. Nobody was gawking when I went by, and NOTHING like the endless parade of tourists that stop at the house in Albuquerque used as Walter & Skyler White’s home in Breaking Bad. I went to visit someone else and in doing research I discovered the family was also there, as was mobster Jimmy Burke who was played by Robert De Niro in Goodfellas. Except in the movie his name was Jimmy Conway. Anyway, I visited my friend and Burke and then the Defeos last. I left a rose for each one of the children, spoke to them and said my piece.
