Appreciate News First and Dr. Careem for enlightening Sri Lankans on our ethnic origin since many, inclusive of Malays and Javas have forgotten and overlooked on their roots, cultural practice, language and even cuisine. Each Malay family came to Ceylon has their own story to share with everyone, whilst this discussion summarised it wonderfully. Thank you for informing on Serikaya and dodol, which are in fact are our dishes where a very few knows about it, especially non Malays are not aware of this and believes that origin is from different regions belonging to different ethnic origins ( where my attempts of educating the common population on this fact has been quite an unsuccessful one)

@tmzthehistorian9639
@tmzthehistorian9639 3 жыл бұрын
Though Weerabangsa's are scattered around the island, majority of them lived in Trincomalee, up until the 1980s or so. My mum's relatives, the Lyes, Jainudeens, Chunchies, Saldins, Jayahs and Kayats are related to a few Weerabangsa's, and there were quite a few Weerabangsa's in the Armed forces and the Police. If they were attached to the Ceylon Rifle Regiment, records can be obtained from the Archives in Kew, UK, the service records, under Ceylon. The Ceylon Blue Books, Ferguson Directories, and numerous other registries should contain some details of your forebears (if you know their names and the original spellings), if they had served in the forces and Governmental departments. You ought to visit the National Archives, Colombo, the Police Library, and other repositories if you wish to find out more. Hope I have answered your question.

I got stumble over these family names, they have unique meaning in Malay language..such as Veerabangsa = Wirabangsa = Hero of the Nation, Chunchies = Kunci = Keys, Jayahs = Jaya = Victory, Kayats = Hikayat = Story/advanture related of Ancient Kingdom.. maybe there are stories behind those names

This needs to be in Sinhala and Tamil as well. Sri Lankans as a whole live in a bubble - we need to get in touch with reality. 23&me or some genetic tests also should be done to show how mixed all of us are. This whole pure race business will only hold us back till we all march slowly to ruin, and let our 'leaders' take advantage of all of us.

You ought to begin your search with the birth and death certificates, and then move to the directories, Ceylon blue books, Ferguson directories, Ceylon almanac, and other sources. The National Archives, and the library of the National Museum Colombo are the best repositories. So is the birth and death registrar office, dam street, Colombo. The search depends on the profession of your forbears, if they were in the military, police, and administrative services, you can find also access the National Archives, Kew Archives, and Commonwealth war office etc.

Called Sri Lankan "Malays". But they all look like INDIANS/TAMILS to me. Including the two Sri Lankan "Malay" men in this video. And when they speak, whether English or Malay, they do so with Tamil/Indian accent. Their Malay language follows Tamil language syntax and grammatical structure. So instead of saying "rumah biru" (blue house) as in standard Malay language of Southeast Asia, they say "biru rumah", pretty much like Indians of Malaysia who are not fluent in Malay speak.. Any of these Sri Lankan "Malays", if they are to stand in a crowd of Malaysians in Malaysia, Malaysians, including Malaysian Malays, would mistake them as Indians or Tamils. And they would be called "mamak" in Malaysia. "Mamak" refers to Indian Muslims as well as to Malays with partly Indian blood. And I couldn't understand at all Sri Lankan Malay language when I listen to it, just a jumble of Malay and Javanese words. Just like listening to Tagalog, or maybe a bit easier than Tagalog. My Indonesian friends too have same view of Sri Lankan Malays and their Sri Lankan Malay language. No offense here, just my view as a Malaysian Malay.

None of them have an Indian accent, it's a Sri Lankan accent. They look South Asian because Malays are mixed with other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. There are still Malays that look more like typical Malay in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Malay has nothing to do with Malay language from Malaysia. It developed from Batavian Malay with influences from other languages in Sri Lanka. You need to stop thinking "Malay" equals Malaysian Malay" because it doesn't in a Sri Lankan context. Most Sri Lankan Malays are Javanese, Ambonese, Balinese and others from eastern Indonesia. Only a minority actually trace their ancestry to the Malay peninsula.

The loophole in his analysis is, while referring to the rest of the world in pre-colonial appellations, he still refers to our island as "Sri Lanka". Which is very funny, to say the least. If Indonesia had a diversity which was reduced and shrunk by the term "Indonesia", the same should be applied to the term, Ceylon/Sri Lanka.
