Perhaps the most extraordinary achievement by a member of the Bharathar community was that of Santiago de Mel, also known as ‘Godfather’ (Aiya or Periva in Tamil), who rose from status as a minor clerk in a forgettable commodity house, first to become the leading agricultural importer of onions from his own farms near Tuticorin, and then to innovate the distribution of cooking oils and kerosene by bullock carts throughout the island under the Rising Sun brand. The entire operation was staffed by his Bharathar relatives from the defunct port city of Vembar

Woww Dr Careem amazes me with his vast knowledge, fluency and love his attitude, and thanks for clearing the fact that Moors have South Indian origins. The interviewer should learn to respect and allow the guest, Dr Careem to complete his sentences, this is so impolite, and obnoxious behaviour. We truly appreciate the effort taken by Newsfirst to raise awareness on all these dying ethnic groups

When some of the Bharathar's moved into other trades, they also moved inland mainly to cities such as Anuradhapura, Matale, Kandy, etc. Also, the first Bharathar Bishop is the Most Rev.Tiburtius Roche. S.J., the first Indian Bishop of Latin rite and also the first Bishop of the Diocese of Tuticorin who studied at St. Benedict's college at Kotahena.

JL Carvalho textiles stores and Cheap side stores in colombo run by Bharathas. They are the first community imported textiles, fabrics and canned food and frozen food long time ago There was a big sweet confectioneries run by Selvam Kahoo from Vembar. In Jaffna the first person to import car spare parts and sold in his hardware shop is called Vincent Ignatius Peries. The store was called Dunlope Stores in hospital road in Jaffna. After the 1983 problem the store in Jaffna and house behind was burnt. Hope somebody remembers these stores and people in this community.
Fantastic research and narration of the birth of our community. Very proud to be born as Bharavas. Thank you to both.

Very illuminating and very much in keeping with what I have read from many sources other than Dr. Careem. It should be valuable to Sri lankans to know how the population is made and how to have integration.

Dr Careem is a fount of wisdom, and a fluent speaker, I see, this program series could be much better if the presenter would respect his guest, and allow him to complete his sentences. Dr Careem's sentences have been muted in certain parts, and the editing is bad. On the episode on Jews I attributed Dr Careem's knowledge, talent and fluency to his privileged upbringing, but I agree, time and again he has maintained his calm and conducted himself in a professional manner. The presenter seems over confident, and should climb down his high horse

Dr Careem, has shared interesting facts on the Bharathas, but the presenter keeps asking irrelevant questions. Can't hear what Dr Careem wants to share. and his sentences are silenced in certain sections. Presenter should allow others to speak, not ask questions and give answers without allowing Dr to speak.

Howcome words like තාත්ති, නගා, රුක්, that are not related to any Indian languages are in Sinhala? They were the first 3 Hittite words discovered in Turkey. Hittites were lost after they fought with Arabs some long time ago. Did they end up in Sri Lanka? Portuguese names like Fernando etc. in Negombo area happened because they descend from Indians who came and worked under Portuguese masters and had their masters' names attached for convenience of roll calling.

There is a lot of false theories in Sri Lanka including in Sri Lankan fairy tale stories about who the native Sri Lankans were. Native Sri Lankans were black hunter gatherers who came in rafts about 2000-5000 years ago from East African regions. They also migrated to South India and Sri Lanka. Later long nose light skinned Aryans(Iranians) invaded the land through India 1000-200 years ago. This theory can be proven scientifically.
@cssuntherraoАй бұрын
The Aryan invasion theory has been debunked. When there was a big population in the subcontinent, why would black africans from a distant continent be a big or main influence though they too may have contributed to the mix.
