How SpaceX beat Boeing to send NASA astronauts into orbit first.
*Corrections:
@ 3:15 Refers to the engines of the Starliner spacecraft not firing at the right time rather than the engines of the rocket, which did fire correctly.
@ 6:48 The Atlas V rocket was operated by United Launch Alliance, not "developed". It was originally designed by Lockheed Martin, which merged with Boeing to form ULA.

Yes .. it doesn't look like now but ...there are 4 more companies that will almost equal spacex by 2050 .right now spacex is the rabbit that running and ahead of everyone ...soon or later spacex will definitely have some strong competition .. because musk don't understand business model that well he highly depend on self publicity and image that he brings to company other companies work hard in their own ways and will not reviled their secret to take over spacex until they are fully ready .

NASA and the Congress made them arrogant and complacent. They have a responsibility for the thousands of jobs loss when the complacency comes crashing down in 11 pieces. @@BBBrasil Very strange to blame the government for the failings of a private company, though they are in bed with each other so much that I'm not sure there's much of a distinction between them at this point. Having worked at Boeing (though, a different division), the culture there made me buckle. I only ever dreamed of getting involved in the space project 10 years down the road, heavily educating myself in order to do so. Unfortunately, in doing so it made my life unbearable, because 1. I became a growing threat, and 2. Self-improvement and working by a commom vision, was evidently not the game i was meant to be playing there. It was clear that i should instead be bolstering up others and courting with the powerful to enhance my career (reading Robert greens 48 laws of power, certainly helped). Of which, it took me a while to even understand why these people were trying to break me. But, it did, and I'm still recovering, it almost changed my perception on life, should i have played that game? No. Seeing Musk and SpaceX team doing so well is really putting my faith back into humanity - this culture of innovation and future vision, does exist. I fear the dynamic is too embedded in the culture of Boeing. How the hell do you fix it? I dont know, other than a split and rebrand, or expensive governmental oversight - which is specifically what this program is trying to eliminate, because it is slow in nature. But I expect a disaster, after another, if they continue to pump it full of taxpayers money. It doesn't set the incentives correctly.

It's not competition most companies are doing it for money not caring if we ever leave the planet. Musk is doing it cause he really wants to advance mankind unlike most of the so called competition except for Virgin Galactic with an original design to get people talking about space and Bigelow with its inflatables. The Others are merely around to take money out of SpaceX pocket slowing them down with your great so called competition. NASA doesn't have unlimited funding remember? And SpaceX even with all the contracts don't have enough money to build Starship. Notice they need Starlink for that

@barrielui
@barrielui 3 жыл бұрын
ULA builds launch vehicles of purposes different from SpaceX. The Delta IV and Atlas V use liquid hydrogen upper stages, which are much more efficient than the RP-1 (basically more refined kerosene) powered Falcon 9 upper stage (of course more expensive). Falcon 9 is cheap and reliable for low Earth orbit launches (where most satellites operate at, including the ISS), but it is simply incapable of launching heavy objects to high Earth orbit or interplanetary flights. ULA vehicles are very much needed for deep space launches.

@@DecepticonLeader Yes, but Starship isn't ready and its current concept seem to be focusing on people moving. Atlas and Delta are and will still be workhorses for some time especially for deep space missions. P.S. I look forward to Starship and SpaceX never fail to amaze us. However, the rocket industry is big enough for us to appreciate both SpaceX and ULA. Hmm did anyone talk about SLS?🤭
@DecepticonLeader
@DecepticonLeader 3 жыл бұрын
@@barrielui SLS isn't ready either and it's going to be completed at a later time, cost more to build and launch etc. Starship will have a higher load capacity than Artemis. Boeing used to be a giant but it has become too rigid lately. And with all the recent problems with them not able to sell airplanes they are at risk of falling behind and becoming a shadow of its former self.

Planes will still be more viable for economic travel within the next 5 years. There will be more in circulation, thus it can supply the demand meaning that there will be lower costs. Remember, a full Superheavy stack is required for such a flight and when we are to also consider fuel it would jump each flight up by around 300,000 usd. It can be efficient in regards to being able to deploy payloads into orbit but this doesn't necessarily mean it is the perfect earth transportation system. Furthermore, this doesn't even take into account the infrastructure of such a system it would require there to be barges as well as a fleet of ships that work to ensure that they are continuously fueled.

Over long periods of time, the improbable becomes inevitable. Assuming we survive long enough to get to space properly, casual interplanetary travel becomes inevitable. The only question is, how long will it take? The same is true for an immense amount of technologies that seem absurd or impossible now, but actually don't break any laws of physics. Even interstellar travel becomes inevitable... though the same is not true for superluminal travel, because the latter might just be genuinely impossible.

Yes please, it is important that Boeing can keep up with this "race". The key phrase here is "healthy competition". China, India, Japan, UAE also needs to keep pushing hard. In the end humankind is the ultimate winner here.

0:48 Except, kind of everyone expected it after the massive delays on Boeing's side. While they were there on SpaceX' side too, I always felt like they were expected and very much calculable (famous Elon-time). While I personally wasn't a hundred per cent sure, I kind of expected it. Now that Dragon has flown I'm stoked to see Boeing perform such a magnificent launch too!

Still, I route for spaceflight as a whole, not any company; I love SpaceX but not exclusively, just because they are the best right now. Boeing's rockets aren't exceptional at all and hardly modern but their capsule is a different caliber.

Ten years ago I was working for a company that made high tech pressure regulators for the aerospace industry. Among their customers were Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, and SpaceX as well as several others. Of all of this companies customers, SpaceX’s technical and quality requirements were the most reasonable, and made the most sense. I thought at the time that SpaceX had some pretty smart people working for them.

This video makes Boeing and SpaceX sounds more like rivals than they actually were. Both sides congratulated each other when they made progress, consoled each other when they had setbacks, and shared everything they learned with each other. Sure they were in a race but it wasn’t like they hated each other

Great cover on the news~! Kudos~! One more thing, the David and Goliath quote and interpretation got my attention... I wonder if the moral of the story was: Davids relative counter-capabilities to Goliath's that grant his the victory, or David's faith, that gave him the courage, strength and will to defeat a Giant-warrior/athlete with weapons. (Goliath immobile?, slow? I don't think so)

3:15 this is wrong. The Atlas V rocket performed perfectly and placed Starliner exactly in its intended orbit, in fact it performed better than needed. It was Starliner’s thrusters that fires at the wrong time, due to Starliner’s mission clock being 11 hours ahead of where it should have been. After having used all that fuel, Starliner no longer had enough fuel margin to safely dock with the ISS, so they had to abandon it. So I just wanted to make it clear that ULA’s Atlas V rocket, the one that took Starliner into orbit, did so flawlessly. *edit: no, im not some ULA/boeing fanboy by any means, but as a fan of all things space, gotta give credit where credits due/make sure that if you’re pointing the finger, that it’s being pointed at the right thing!*

Thanks for the care in your reply. I was referring to the Starliner spacecraft's engines not firing but understand how this could be misconstrued, since the visuals showed the rocket launch. I'll make an amended note in my comment section now :)

Yes so it worked, but was worse. All that government endorsed funding and the ship only made it into orbit then they forgot it needed more fuel or used too much. Meanwhile the nonfinanced company that did it basically 'for fun' or whatever did better. Just like (most) every other thing as of lately. There's probably problems that original Boeing engineers would not overlook, but now, these industries are full of friends/families/rich and the corrupt college student system, where there's only a few inferior talents left, and their oldschool engineers that made the brand name trusted are probably gone etc.. It's been stated over many documentaries of such companies that later, the company couldn't easily rediscover how some of the past engineers had made certain things and had to either re-learn it or do a different design; this tends to happen and at times leads to inconsistencies in design by missing basics and focusing on other parts, although it depends specifically what is being done or being made. Such an error on Apollo mission, with even older technologies present, would have been catastrophic, as we would have done it, but those astronauts would not return. It's inevitable that independent people will outperform them nowadays, and those interns likely just start insulting like liberal college students (like 'who are u?' throwing insults around thinking they are very successful) if you mention the reality. With the huge amounts they get paid and even distribute to employees it's astounding how much of it goes to waste or simply for 'comfort money' to their employees. Oh well.

Yes but what did it cost to throw away the perfectly performing booster. They need to learn how to reuse or they will not be able to compete with spaceX

Great video. Your take on David and Goliath is spot on. Malcolm Gladwell covered the Bible story and came to the same conclusion. You show up to a one-on-one battle you bring a sword or something to swing. David's disruptive innovation took Goliath down before the giant could even get close. There's definitely room for more than one company in space, sadly Boeing is probably not going to be one of those companies. You better believe that Boeing engineers are scrambling to match some of what Space X has accomplished. The problem is they can't just hurry and catch up, they have to turn Boeing around before they can even begin.

Excellent editing and, by far, the information about the beef between a large established corporation and the little startup company (David) is quite really straightforward, plain and simple to understand. It is anecdotal that many Boeing senior executives derided Elon´s SpaceX mercilessly. They even had the nerve to say that SpaceX´s rockets were put together with rubber bands and sealing wax. Well, elon got the last laugh against Goliath. What´s the moral? Never bet against a dark horse. Incidentally, Cindy, you are smashingly beautiful. All the best.
