My favourite Philip K. Dick short story. It reads like an episode of the Outer Limits tv series. Admittedly I have only scratched the surface of his body of work but there seems to a theme that runs through many that I have read which question the reality the characters are experiencing. I wonder how much the drugs he was known to have taken and the schizophrenia some believe he had played on these stories and novels. His novels (the few I've read) mess with my mind, especially Divine Invasion.

As the aircraft reached a height there was a sudden explosion and bits fell from the sky. The leader robot turned to his companion and said "I am surprised that when they discovered we had lied to them once that they believed us the second time. Now its time to annihilate all the others".

Who or what is the narrator? The Leadies are NOT Leedies -- they are Leddies -- made of lead! The metal lead.

The reading was fine, but the moral of the story was utterly naive.. "War is bad, we can all get along if we just try." Poppycock.

Don't worry, its apparent naivete is misleading. The story is a companion piece to some of PKD's other early works and provides some "historical" scaffolding for his alternate universe.

War is nothing more than goons trying to steal resources at this point. The reason the United States is in Syria is to steal oil. Israel occupies the Golan Heights, but the Golan Heights is under Israeli occupation. In 2013, Genie Energy signed a deal with Israel to mine it's oil resources, even though it doesn't belong to Israel. Assad objected and was subsequently framed for using chemical weapons against his civilian population for no military or political strategic advantage. He has a military and and airforce at his disposal, he would have no need to use the one weapon that gives the United States it's only excuse to be in Syria. There's also a minor reason the United States is in Syria, it's Russia's only military base in the Middle East. It's not a question about "getting along", war is instigated by mafia groups which you naively call "my government". If you care to, look up who is on the strategic board of directors of Genie.

This is not one of his better stories and the guy narrating it is so monotone in his delivery that it's hard to really get into it. But what gets me the most is the horrendous Russian accent of the soldier near the end. I pride myself on doing some common accents and this is some kind of combination of a Soviet/French/Italian/Spanish abomination that is almost criminal.
