Simon, as regards unique features. in the late 80's early 90's they ended up building another new town attached to the NewTown. It's called Woodham, and is the site of the ancient settlement you referred to (though no discernible sight of it). Unlike the original town, it was all privately developed and funded. There are a couple of pubs and small shopping areas there. The original pubs in the town were all based on the individual housing estates / areas, though they have been closing down. The town centre in Aycliffe hasn't amounted to anything since the 1970's, and it is a complicated state of affairs with respect to ownership and development. There are lots of green spaces, as mandated by local development bylaws, and very pleasant areas surrounded by woods as you head into Woodham. I guess the name gives it away. Plenty things not right in the town, though also a lot of very good which it is easy to overlook.

I can't recommend the pubs of Newton A', but the Steam Machine Brewery is worth a visit, if you like 'craft' styles and weird brews.

I only know two pubs from Newton Aycliffe (Newton Aycliffe Sports club (Near Moore Lane) and the Phoenix

Blimey, it has real shortage!

The uniqueness is there are lots of closed shop units and not enough people to call it a busy town centre

Sorry mate, Vic Reeves did not come from Newton Aycliffe. He was born in Leeds, and moved to Darlo when he was 6. He did do an engineering course in Newton Aycliffe, bizarrely at the same time as Martin Atkins, who became the drummer with PIL, John Lydon's band. Like what you do though, keep it up.

I moved to Australia years ago and watching this doesn’t make me feel homesick at all. The town centre has always lacked soul with no pubs or restaurants and the shops have been shut down for as long as I can remember. On the flip side I know lots of really good people in the town and it’s not their fault the council has zero vision.

@@lukea1980 your summary there is really accurate from what I saw today. Cheers for watching!
