This is probably the best song ever. Been clean and sober 34 years now. I lost my son this year to suicide. All I know that as long I keep going forward, no drink or drug ill be ok. Good line, "you wouldnt be you if it was easy" my late sisters words are all over this. She always told me I didn't do anything the easy way, but thats what makes me who I am today. My son just forgot who he was for a time but in the end he gained his angel wings

It seems fitting somehow that I wrote you a long note, and somehow it vanished in the ether. What I was trying to say was that I got sober in '83, have experienced grief and loss, and love this song probably as much as you do. The 4/4 time and the "Travis Strum" (or "Cotton Pickin'") fingerstyle makes it easy to play for old timers like me. It's a song you can sing like nobody's watching and nobody's listening. I am so sorry that this song brings your loss to mind, but I guess you experience both joy and tears like I do when I hear it. Although I'm just a guy who's played Americana since high school -- sixty years -- I've never been very good at it, and I've always said that I wish I could write just one song this good. So I'm grateful to Rodney for doing what so many of us have longed to do. Maybe there's still time. It ain't over yet. Cheers - T👍🏼

It's like I'm sitting at a bus stop waiting for a train Exactly how I got here is hard to explain My heart's in the right place, what's left of it I guess My heart ain't the problem, it's my mind that's a total mess With these rickety old legs and watery eyes It's hard to believe that I could pass for anybody's prize Here's what I know about the gifts that God gave You can't take 'em with you when you go to the grave It ain't over yet, ask someone who ought to know Not so very long ago we were both hung out to dry It ain't over yet, you can mark my word I don't care what you think you heard, we're still learning how to fly It ain't over yet For fools like me who were built for the chase Takes the right kind of woman to help you put it all in place It only happened once in my life, but man you should have seen Her hair two shades of foxtail red, her eyes some far out sea blue green I got caught up making a name for myself, you know what that's about One day your ship comes rolling in and the next day it rolls right back out You can't take for granted none of this shit The higher up you fly boys, the harder you get hit It ain't over yet, I'll say this about that You can get up off the mat or you can lay there till you die It ain't over yet, here's the truth my friend You can't pack it in and we both know why It ain't over yet Silly boys blind to get there first Think of second chances as some kind of curse I've known you forever and ever it's true If you came by it easy, you wouldn't be you Make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me forget myself Back when down on my luck kept me up for days You were there with the right word to help me crawl out of the maze And when I almost convinced myself I was hipper than thou You stepped up with a warning shot fired sweet and low across the bow No you don't walk on water and your sarcasm stings But the way you move through this old world sure makes a case for angel wings I was halfway to the bottom when you threw me that line I quote you now verbatim, "Get your head out of your own behind" It ain't over yet, what you wanna bet One more cigarette ain't gonna send you to the grave It ain't over yet, I've seen your new girlfriend Thinks you're the living end, great big old sparkle in her eye It ain't over yet

I hope you click on this link and listen to this wonderful song. But do not click this link without a little preparation. Please be prepared when you listen to this song! Prepare yourself by going somewhere quiet. Get a good sound system and for Pete’s sake, turn off that damn phone. Get your favorite drink of choice and sit in your favorite chair. Hell, go as far as putting on your favorite hat if that makes you more comfortable. Do what cha gotta do to be comfortable in order to clear your mind of all the nastiness we seem to live in today. Then be prepared to listen to a collaboration by legendary musicians that will simply blow your mind. And if you really want to be blown away take the time to learn about how this song came to be. It’s a beautiful story that I will not ruin... you should here Rodney tell the story himself. The words written by Mr. Rodney Crowell tell a story of friendship, pain and redemption that all of us can relate to. His music composition of this song is nothing short of genius. The way we are introduced to the other artists, first John Paul White, then Rosanne Cash and finally the greatest harp player in the universe, Mr. Mickey Raphael can only be described as class, pure class. And the harmony between these artist is beyond magical. My goodness, even the video is shot in a classy fashion. So yea, be prepared. Be prepared to look back on your life with both fondness and pain, especially at the end when Mickey Raphael closes out the song with all his God given talent.

We had 3rd row seats. It was a night of beautiful music and storytelling I'll never forget. Rodney is sitting on a stool with his beat-up old acoustic guitar telling stories. This is a great song. One of Rodney Crowell's best in my humble opinion. I'm a DJ on our local unaffiliated broadcast radio station and I would love to play this song. Rodney has a lot of fans in this town. However, in the lyrics is the word "shit" and so can't be played on a broadcast medium. It's an FCC rule and can come with a $10,000 fine. So, don't blame me and, of course I don't blame Rodney that I can't play it. And before you suggest it, I will never modify anyone's song with a bleep or by cutting out the word. A song is like a painting. It's presented to the world by the artist as a completed work. Thanks to Rodney Crowell for a lifetime of great writing and playing.

Lisa, Joel... You two have been my happiness, my best and blessed friends, the loves of my life all of these years. I would not be here without you. Saying that I will miss you is so simple cliche compared to your genius IQs but I fall short of the right words. My heart physically hurts to leave but you two have to know that you have been a glimpse of God's goodness, kindness, and patience for me. You two are more precious than any gem on this earth and I would take a bullet for you anyday. You are priceless. I feel God's hope because of the examples, trials, love, and forgiveness that you we have experienced together. It ain't over my yet my friends! I love you both. I will miss you every day of my life... Give you my word. Until we meet again. ♡

This song has helped me more then words could explain. I am a singer-songwriter from Houston TX as well. My mom was signed with Conway when she was 17, and I wrote a song about it last night. I hadn't written a song in 2 years, so thank you. I was moved by an interview you did. You said "sometimes the songwriter's job is to observe". That statement changed my perspective on songwriting. I wish you would do a songwriters workshop in Houston sometime. I am also a huge fan of John Paul White. I love the call and response play on words between your versus and courses. If I never get a chance to meet you I just want to say thank you. I have so much more I want to say but I will stop now. I love the song

My God! He's got another hit on his hands! I'm sure he doesn't mind that but he seems to have a message he is trying to get out in all his recent writing. The message is the thing, you write to get closer to something, someone. It is really a gift to keep expressing this stuff and have the feelings readily understood. Another heart felt gem here.
