Long live anchored outs! I was one at pillar point harbor. Paid rent for 11 years in my 55' motor sailor . Then spent another 10 years on anchor there.. great memories ,met amazing people..I had live bands and neighbors brought pot luck dinners for our dock parties..including the former harbor master who endorsed me for my charter license ( However there was a big sweep done by new authority there.. very unfriendly assistant master (A) hole. Needless to say..my old but beautiful boat were confiscated ,as well as many others.. all destroyed on the Beach.

I'm 36years old and I'm not at all financially inclined, that being said I too are about to start living my life in a similar way to these people. As Americans we should be able to live the way we feel free,happy, and to live well enough to at least survive. The way these humans are living aren't hurting anyone, they're just trying to LIVE... It's a shame and unconstitutional for them to be getting harassed the way they are. It's infuriating what this country has become and even more so where it's heading. Open your eyes people. I was out anchored in the Intercoastal Waterway in Florida and we had access to the marina nearby, literally $50 a month and we had access to full facilities and that $50 was per vessel, they had a pump station that was literally about $10 to clear the tank out maybe once every two months.. concessions could be made for these people but it's exactly what they don't want, they just want them gone...

$50 a month for access to full facilities? That seems like a great deal. Ability to have a clean bathroom. Access to water and pump out station. I guess there is no marina that wants to cater to these folks......these guys want it free. No free lunches unfortunately. I can see both sides. A private marina just can't give away services because you don't want to pay the Man. That area in Sausalito apparently is very exclusive even by Bay area standards.

It's about slavery. Keep people on uncle Sam's plantation and you control them. Interesting how the politicians are flooding our country with illegals and this is part of people paying the price. Housing has gotten stupid expensive and this was an alternative. Now the politicians are paying homage to their contributors at the expense of the people wanting to be free. The official said it's about safety. Most of the boats are unoperative. We spend billions in the Ukraine. Giving billions to illegals but no help for citizens. One question, how does a 6 year congressman, AOC become worth 29 mil in 6 years? Graft and corruption rampant but no one to help a citizen. Our politicians suck d***.

@davidmiller4594
@davidmiller4594 4 ай бұрын
@johnharris5173 Live aboard fees are very expensive. That is if you can find a marina that has one available. They limit the amount of live aboard slips leased out. Maintenance. It's very expensive to maintain a decent sized boat that's comfortable to live on. I owned a 41 foot sailboat, which is big enough, but the cost of owning a boat that big isn't economical. If you wanted to, a smaller boat like a Catalina 30 would be OK. It's quite small, but the Catalina 30 does offer enough room for 1 or maybe a couple to live on, but not comfortably. If you really want to go economically, getting a boat that doesn't have an inboard engine is the best economical way to go. A 24 footer, or something around that, with an outboard, will be very cramped, but it is doable as a live aboard. The bottom line is, if you plan to live on a boat, you're going to have sacrifices. Either financial and/or in comfort. I told a lot of people over the years that "my boat isn't a place a sleep that I also get to sail." The reality is, "It's a sailboat that I also can sleep in." Prioritizing the idea that it Is a boat and not an apartment really helps with the psychological part of sacrificing the amenities of live aboard life. You must Love your boat.

I had a friend who nearly had his restored, in the back yard of his mother's house, with a privacy fence around it. Somebody reported it, and his mother got the letter. She had it towed for scrap. If it's not licensed and insured, it's junk, and people like you voted for it. A friend got a ticket for a junk car in his driveway. He came out and it had a flat tire, so he drove his other car. His car was licensed and insured, but muh property values.

My wife and I lived aboard and anchored out most of the time for decades traveling much of the world. But we were on sound well found vessels, 99% of the time fully capable of voyaging. We are also very sympathetic to these peoples plight. We have help found and operate a non-profit to help down and out people in our area, costal NC. I taught sailing throughout SFO bay including Richardsons bay for years. I know the area and the no win situation there and just can’t think of any answer to this problem. I can easily think of many possible solutions better than this. Such as a quarterly/annual inspection and or "round the buoy" test. Many marinas and mooring zones already implement such solutions around the world. It gives incentive for us boat owners to keep our boats functional and and makes the Anchorage a safer place. What they are doing at Richardson Bay is clearly being funded by some snobs who think they own the water. There are many more elegant solutions than this.

@@ehlava because it's more than just these hold outs. Free anchorage has historically been a given right for the Mariner and this eviction is threatening that notion in favor of restriction of agency to benefit the rich. It's not a good trend. It's a huge threat to people like me who currently live legally on a boat. Who knows when my anchorage will suddenly change the law. It's an attack on a legitimate way of life thousands of years old. To us mariners it's like saying we're not allowed sit down on the grass during a long hike.

It's a similar situation in Vancouver BC. You're allowed 2 weeks in False Creek, a sheltered anchorage. After that you have to be gone for 2 weeks which means anchoring out in the exposed English Bay before you can return. Every time there is a westerly storm some of these boats will end up on the beach. On one occasion there were 15 boats on the beach. Some were alright, others smashed to pieces. At one point in the film the harbour master states that the socio-economic reasons are not related to this campaign. They are in fact the main reason. In this city in a very short period of time the price of housing has put a lot of people in a dire situation - do you sink or do you live afloat.

I can understand the “unsafe boat” argument but the 72 hr limit is ridiculous. 72 hrs is intended to remove people. If you really wanted to test whether a boat is dangerous you could put a 14 day limit. That means they’d have to pick up anchor, move somewhere else and move back proving they are seaworthy. The short limit is intended to punish the “undesirable” boats. Ugh 😑

This country treats those with meager incomes like criminals. Almost all our ancestors, just two generations removed, were subsistence living. They grew and raised their food. They had gardens and chickens, cows and pigs. They pooped in a hole in the ground covered by a shack. They bathed in a giant tub by the fireplace or oil stove. They warmed the water in pans on the stove or over the fire. They were the backbone of America! And so are these folks! LEAVE THEM ALONE! My God, have a little compassion! And the fact is, these people are looking for someone else to provide a place for them to buy groceries, to provide clean water, a place to dump trash and bathroom waste. They are in no way living sustainably or low impact. It seems noble and glamorous when you skip half the story. We all need to contribute to have a functioning society. That being said, a system for making sure vessels are up to code and manageable seems like a good plan. These boats were inoperable. That means, at some point down the line, someone is paying to deal with them. These people are just bums. Them being on the water doesn't make them that much different than the squatters in the park. Dude was literally panhandling cigarettes on the water, the lady was illegally using another squatters foodstamps, the one guy was hoarding boats like so many tent people we see on land, and he also was verbally abusive and threatening to the authorities. Well done for the documentary. I have lived aboard in San Francisco’s while restoring a classic yacht and can attest to the improper treatment of these peaceful live aboard.it is pure greed on the part of the landlubbers and the harbourmaster. The issue begins with the insurance companies, many boats can’t get insurance as they need a survey or maintainence done in a haulout yard, but the haulout yards won’t haul them out as they don’t have insurance…then there is the pre conception they are losers…however many rich people spend their summer holidays on yachts …. Perhaps the locals in Sam Francisco have forgotten it was the fishermen and mariners who laid the foundation of this city… so they should be left in peace , The best thing the harbourmaster could do is in the space they crush the boats , allow the boats that need maintainence to go there to get maintained , this would be a win for all and create a better community life for all people there .

I'll bet you have distressed homeless and disabled people in your area. They may not be living on boats, which apparently have a romantic appeal to you. They probably live in dilapidated RVs on tents on the street. What are you doing to help THEM? I'll bet you could double up on bedrooms, sacrifice your living room and such and provide housing for several disabled and homeless people. So, how 'bout it? Are you just flapping your mouth or do you actually want to DO something to help people?

@@SeattlePioneer I’m paying 13% taxes in California. I can barely afford to eat. My government here re the ones who are supposed to do something about it. 13 %. And your saying what are we doing? Unfortunately my vote here only counts for one.

I lived off the hook for five years. Everything on my vessel worked and if or when it broke....I fixed it. If your boat is unsafe, doesn't run, hasn't had the thru-hulls maintained, no working toilet/flushed out monthly, ect...you are a hazard to yourself, others and others property. In Florida it's a county by county thing so the laws are always different. I eventually got off of the water and a large part of it was the folks (about 50 percent) that had derelict boats, no $, no resources.... it gets really old really quick especially when your a nice guy who cares about people and is there to help. I mean where do you draw the line and say "no"....so I just exited the scene.

i'm considering living on a sailboat and that is one of my bigger worries... i like helping people but there is a limit i can do before me doing so harms me. i think, maybe doing so but being nomadic might be the solution. if the people around me are taking advantage of me too much, i should just move on.

@@necrokittie2291 are you going to name your vessel "dead kittie"? My 31' Seafarer Yawl is named "still trippin" in homage of her maker Bill Tripp Jr. (9.4 Knott hull speed) That's her in my post picture. Good luck living off the hook if you do. It's not for the feeble minded, lamo's or thoes with no skill set in navigation, mechanical ability and of course, common sense.

I lived at anchor for 12 years on my boat, it was the best time in my life, but you are not allowed to anchor any were for more than 72 hours every were you go, they started getting rid of the anchorages after drug users started living in the anchorages in un sea worthy boats and started trashing the area, so the government closed down all the free anchoring areas, unfortunately a few bad apples ruins it for the good ones
