According to inside sources within Microsoft, they need to learn what is happening themselves. Microsoft's plans keep changing, and management seems lost on what to do. So, an Xbox hand held may be in the cards, or it may not be. However, it's not a good sign when management is already asking developers why games are skipping Xbox. If they are asking this question this late in the game, then Xbox's future looks very bleak. Plus, Sony is rumored to be making its own handheld machine. It will run a new mobile SoC found in upcoming VR headsets. In fact, there is a rumor that Sony and Apple are in discussions for a possible future partnership of some kind. Apple is also working on a new VR headset that may use this mobile SoC. Apple also may be courting Sony to bring games to Mac OS instead of PC. Apple would help fund some of these ports to their platform. So far, this is all behind-closed-door meetings. Any partnership arising from this (If any) would be seen or announced at the time of PS6. However, due to the insane success of Sony's PS5 Portal controller exceeding sales expectations several times over, it has only renewed interest in getting back into the mobile market for Sony. It could still be used as a Portal 2 device for the PS6 and a dedicated game machine like the Nintendo Switch. But expect a beefier price tag. Sony is strongly rumored to be making the PS6 insanely powerful, so the handheld version likely would get the same treatment. PS5 performance for a handheld would likely be possible by 2028 with a marketable price tag of $400.00 or so. So, in the end, Microsft may target 2026 for its next systems. But right now, everything is changing. I wonder if Microsoft even knows what they are doing anymore. 🤷 I'm getting Windows Phone vibes from the Xbox brand right now.

MS, if they want to keep a successful platform for gaming, better create an Xbox gaming mode for Windows. If not, gamers will not only dump the console, but Windows 11 entirely, for the Steam OS platform is growing in adoption as we see with PC handhelds. There will be no need for PC gamers to need Windows.

I agree with everything you say except PC gamers dropping Windows for Steam OS. That aint gonna happen anytime soon. Linux has way too much compatibility issues.

Sure MS could make an XboxOS... but its going to be incredibly difficult for MS to convince PC gamers to move off of Steam, incredibly difficult to convince the vast majority to spend their money on an MS storefront. Why install an XboxOS, what advantage does it have over windows and steam? MS will have to match Steam with its functionality and features, and their more consumer friendly policies. Have to convince people to give up their steam achievements Many PC gamers hate multiple storefronts on PC. Its just not worth the hassle for many gamers. Its negatively impacted many developers who tried to put games on Epic game store 1st.

@@arkamwest As long as MS isn't wanting a cut of Steam's revenue, I'm sure they'd let Steam run on XboxOS. But at the end of the day I don't see Xbox putting in the massive work into an XboxOS, unless it means more revenue for them. How would this increase Xbox revenue?

In theory it's a good idea. In practice it has been tried multiple times (MSX, 3DO, Sreambox) and so far not really succesful.

Personal, im not interested at all in any handheld device to play on, if I wanted to play on a small screen then why not just use the phone or a pad. For me its too small screen, for the same reason im not playing on the phone or a pad. With that said then I know that there most likely are a big market for it in Asia. (since a lot of people there are primary playing on their phones) I still think we need to get a PC experience but in a console and/or get access to Steam/Epic/GOG etc. through the Xbox, otherwise the idea to get next gen Xbox will fall apart. (and im not talkting about the handheld device, since im not in the target group for that).

So you would buy another series x for 500, just to play your steam games on there, on a lower fidelity then you already do on our PC? So you gonna buy games twice? Cause microsoft will not make money off the hardware, they need you to buy gamepass or games from their store. But games in steam are cheaper, so why would I buy from microsoft? Now that we know that Microsoft has PS5 Pro devkits. I wouldn't be surprised if they cancel the next generation xbox and handheld. It's obvious their moving away from consoles from the Tokyo Showcase. Instead of promoting the xbox console, they promoted firestick. Also, Sony said during the FTC they would never give Microsoft future PS5 consoles as it would be too risky to give competitor their technology in advance. Yet, years later, here we are with Xbox Studios having PS5 Pro devkits before the it releases. I believe that's the final nail in the coffin ⚰️ for xbox Future Hardware. I've heard rumors about Microsoft helping Sony with PS6. Sony will be using Microsoft AI with the PS6. It's completely over for console hardware. Don't hold your breath as plans can change, so I believe the next handheld and xbox are canceled
